FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. eens Monpay, Jone 7—6 P.M, ‘The depression of the stock market, which began Asst week with a spirited bear attack, culminated to- day in a very sharp decline in the railway Hst and a heavy drop in many of the miscellaneous shares, The bullish feeling seemed to be entirely without force, except for a brief spell in the earlier portion of the day, when prices were comparatively steady, The bear feeling, on the contrary, was contagious, and the lack of elasticity in the market this morning conduced to spread it, The lines which marked the @ivision of the respective forces constituting the opposing parties of Wall street began to become indistinct, as one after another of the prominent cliques began to sell long stock, &% they did not also go “short.” As ‘the honr approached for the closing of the Long Room the desertion of the bulls to thelr opponents’ ranks gave the latter an overwhelming prestige, and en- abled them to utterly rout the remnant of their ene- my’s forces, The decline was as much as three to ix per cent for the leading railways. It was not accomplished all at once. Each yielding of one or two per cent was followed by a reaction, and the process was repeated at each stage of the downward movement, At the lowest period of the day Rock Island touched 1184, Michigan Southern 10934, St. Paul 75%, Pittsburg, 5%, North- Western common 90%, New York Central 188 and Fort Wayne 156. The market rallied at the close from a half to one and a half per cent. The decline was assisted by the comments upon the unfavorable charac- fer of the bank statement of Saturday last, and anticipations of approaching greater activity in money. The transactions in the stocks first enu- merated above were on a very large scale, and the scene in the Long Room during the afternoon was one of great animation if not excitement. The fol- lowing were the closing prices of stocks at the last board:—Canton, 64), a 65%; Boston Water Power, 17 @ 17%; Qumberland, 34 a 96; Wells-Fargo Ex- press, 31% a 31%; Adams, 593g @ 597; American, 803, a 394; United States, 673¢ @ 67K; Merchants’ Union, 14% a 15; Quicksilver, 1544 8 16; Pacific Mall, 85 a 83 stern Union Telegraph, 4134 a 414; New York Ceutral, 1913, @ 19144; Mariposa preferred, 4045 a@ 40%; Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnau, 75; Hadson River, 16744 @ 157},; Harlem preferred, 150; Reading, 99; Alton and Terra Haute, 38 a 40; do, preferred, 5835 a 00; Toledo and Wabash, 74‘; do. preferred, 80 a 83; Milwaukee and St. Paul, 76% a 77; do. preferred, 87% a S74; Chicago and Alton, 155 bid; do. preferred, 15714 bid; Ohio and Mississippi, & 34; Fort Wayne, 157 a 15744; Michigan Central, 150%; a 13144; Michigan Southern, 11234 a 112%; Hlinois Central, 14334 a 145; Pittsburg, 9935 @ 995,; Lake Shore, 112% a 112%; Rock Island, 119%{ a 11975; Northwestern, 9234; do. preferred, 103%; New Jersey Central, 1173s a 117%; Morris and Essex, 92}; a 93; Hannibal and St. Joseph, 325%; 4.12514; do. preferred, 125 a 128; Chicago, Co- Jumbus and Indiana Central, 4245 a 434. The money market in the earlier hours of the day ‘Was more active than usual for some weeks, and weven per cent was freely paid all round. The in- quiry seemed to be easily satisfed, for there was Jess demand towards the close of banking hours. Benton is the standard authority on this subject in the army, and his teachings formed the basis for all the questions put to the elass, During the heavy cross-question fire which the professors brought to bear upon the various sections, and which may be said to have been in itself a practical illustration of gunnery—it was, strange to say, evident to every person present that certam lessons of the late war had not been lost upon the authorities at Washington who watch over the welfare of West Point, and that very ancient ideas were not allowed to prevail in this branch as they are certainly allowed todo, to some extent, in other specialties of study which could be mentioned, The manufacture of gun- powder, shells, cartridges and a hundred and one other agrecable things which are made for the especial delight and benedt of mankina in general and soldiers in particular was explained at great Jength during the examination. The explosive prin- ciples of gunpowder, the different kinds of artillery fire used for breaching walls, and the advantages and disadvantages of certain metals for the manu- facture of cannon were also subjects which the cadets handjed with the same ability they gave such brilliant evidence of in their examination im engi- neering a few days ago. The following are the names of the members of the various sectious examined to-day and the subject upon which each was questtoned:— FIRST SECTION. ‘Tillman.—Methods of forcing projectiles. For the special satisfaction of the Board of Visit- ors an artillery drill was bad this afternoon on the plains facing the parade ground. Colone! Piper com- manded the battery, the third class acted as can- nonlers, and @ certain number of the first class as oMicers during the drill, which was, no doubt, to the large number of visitors from Cozzens’ and the West Point Hotel who witnessed it, the most attrac- tive part of the day’s proceedings, although, in the opinion of certain young ladies who managed every time @ gun was fired off to shriek m the most natural manner ible under the extenuating circumstances, it was rather too “iond” an exhibition to be thoroughly enjoy- able. The rapidity with whicn the guns were loaded and fired, and the battery changed from one position to another was almost incredible, Such movement the charge in line, changing fronts, forming line, advancing, and movement in column, were splendidly executed. The principal feature, however,of the drill was the movement which com- e dismounting of the pieces and their carria- mounting them and firing ove round. The ing was as complete as corfid be, the guns being unfastened and thrown from the carriages, and the carriages themselves laid on the ground, after the wheels had been taken off, ‘The time occupied in rearrangmg the guns and wheels in their proper places and frmg one round was exactly forty-seven seconds. Strange as this may appear—for it would seem barely pos- sil hat even the wheels of the cannon could have been placed on the axles in such @ prief space of time claws which graduated in 1963, and which, as members of the third class, acted a3 cannoniers in the annual exhibition drill in June, 1364, went through the sate movement in the tucredibly short time of 173, seconds.
