The siueainiendent (its, Queen) explained to them tI the new arrangement aid not require any more of their time juested them to resume their work and give the new system a fair trial. This reasonable request they refused to accede to, stating that Eney would not make the additional trip, even ‘bough it required jess time than they ad been work: fi The company of course could not eer with their demand to return to the old system proceeded to | employ | other Sor wrare, willing le" mes ener new regulations. Certgin evil disposed persons among the former set of drivers theb organized to prevent the cars from being run at all, and to accomplish this proceaded to acts of great violence, throw- fogatones, at the cars while passengers, were m thém, sur. rounding the cara when they stopped to let passengers out, fand then detaching the horses and cruelly beating several o the drivers, and threatening others to waylay them and beat them on thelr way from or to their homes. There are at least two of the new drivers thus beaten now lying dangerously {il—one at the hospitai and one. in Brooklyn. Many of the employes of the road who were willing to work have been prevented from so doing by similar threats, It becaine necessary to call in the aid of the police ; but even this was found ineffective, and the yio- lence of the rloters became so grent that the Siperintendent determined to atop running altogether until it could be done drivers: with safety to the passengers and drivers. In this action le has been uy sustained by the board of directors, and his gondust throughout the whole riot approved of b; them. uid be no diilicult in obtaining drivers = aay number nested, but the fear of violence at the hands of the disafected deters them from engagin ‘The new plan fs so arranged that no more time of service required under it than under the old, One more trip, it is true, is required to be run, and for that the company are wil- ling’to give extra compensation. Such extra compensation was in contemplation and would have been allowed but for the suddenness and violence o the outbreak. This company will not recede from the position they have taken. Their right to prescribe rules and regulations for the management of their road cannot be disputed, They will adhere to the new plan at all hazards, and, if further interfered with, will claim the protection of the pul anthorities: Although the time of service of the drivers is not increased by the new arrangement, the Superintendent, in considera- tion of the extra trip, 1a fully authorized to employ competent drivers and conduct ‘ore, onthe plan of elght trips at two dol- lars and twenty-five cents a day, instead of two dollars, the former price for seven trips. But the situation of driver is offered to allwho may apply, and whose qualifications and references may be satisfactory to the Superintendent, We are happy to say that the conductors did not unite in thie riot, but were willing to turn drivera for the occasion, and would have done #o but for the danger to life and limb from the violence and threats of the rioters. ‘This statement is made to correct misapprehensions on the part of the public, derived from erroneous statements in some of the Rewacapsrsy some of which have stated that the time of service re non from the drivers on this road is sev- enteen hours, This is a great mistake, The actual time un- der the new system which will be cooupied in running the cars, or running time,as it is called, ls twelve hours cigut minutes a day, and the entire time from the time the drivers take their cars in the morning until they leave them in the evening is thirteen hours and forty-five mfuutes only; thus leaving one hour and thirty-seven minutes for dinner and time not engaged in actual running. The time was never less under the old ft eystern, and does not, it is believed, exceed the time of the greut mi sats of the city raliroads.
