The desire to make our own # leading house in the business led us several years since to commence the system of spectal coi s, which, by placing itout of the power of less enterprising agencies to compete with us, has sccured us a larger patronage, probably, than bas ever before been accorded to any Advertising Agency in America. IT3 ADVANTAGES, ITS ADVANTAGES. 178 ADVANTAGES, Wo give the following — Tor using our lists as adver. ising medtums:— 1, A better class of papers are secured than by making your own selections. 2 The work is done much Tons than at the usual rates. 8. A better position for advertisementsis secured than could otherwise be obtained. 4. The advertisements will be promptly inserted. 6, They will appear in every issue of the papers. 6. We watch the papers aud see that the work is faithfully and correctly performed, IN ADDITION TO THE ADVANTAGES ABOVE SET FORTH, OUR AGENCY HfA8 EVERY FACILITY FOR TRANSACTING THE ORDINARY BUSINESS OF AD- VERTISING AGENTS IN THE ORDINARY WAY, OUR FACILITIES NOT BEING EQUALLED BY THOSE OF ANY SIMILAR ESTABLISHMENT IN AMERICA, WHY IT 13 BETTER FOR AN ADVERTISER TO USE THE LISTS WE HAVE SELECTED THAN TO MAKE A SELECTION OF HI8 OWN. Asan advertisement cannot be taken for a paper on our plan without a previous contract between the publisher and ourselves, it is evident the lists nlust be made up from our own {dens of the wants of the public. This ts not an objection, No individual advertiser can be so well informed as to the relative value of newspapers, receive such complete files, nor have facilities to Keep them in that orderly position Ha | for reference ao necessary for thoxe who propose to become authority, to dfcide which is the best paper in every place in @ country so large as ours, We have complete Mists open to the public for examination, and are in receipt at our olfice of nearly 1,000 different papers daily. We offer the public every facility to examine and decide whether or not our selections are judicious. It is as much for our interest ns for that of our customers that their invesimenis shall be profitable, in order that they may be tnduced to patronize us further. Great care {s used in making our selections to have the papers judiciously distributed ov parties alike, and particularly to haye one paper fn the shire town of every county. REASON WHY A LARGE LIST MAY BRgUSED IN PREFERENCE TO A SMALLER ONE. Many advertisers, in making ® selection of newspapers to the States, so as to reach all I | cover the territory included in one of our lasts, would proba- bly select no more than fifty papers where we have abundred, but of the fifty selected, if the advertiser be well posted (and take but one Ina place), ft willbe found that at least four- ‘ifthe of them are on our list; and when we undertake to in- sert his advertisement for a month in our one hundred for as ttle money as he would have to pay to obtain the fifty so- lected, we think no objection can be made to the larger list, THE POSITION OCCUPIED BY OUR ADVERTISE. Next to having @ good paper comes the importance of good position in it, Gar oats Wikre made to secure for our customers @ preference in this respect, the advertise- ment being guaranteed » position on the inside, or next to a column of readig matter, under the heading of “New Adver- tisements,” which secures the attention, and is, we think, as desirable as the special notice column, As we always send printed copy, set up with care, we obtain a better style and general appearance than do other advertisements in the same — = HOW THE IMPORTANT ADVANTAGES WE CLAIM ARE OBTAINED. This te simply by applying the old system of yearly con- tracts on a large scale. An ordinary weekly paper of aver- ‘age circulation is in the habit of charging say 83 for ten Hines one month, but for 100 wiil sell a column of $40 lines for ‘& whole year, with the privilege of changing the mater monthly, thus making the cost of 10 lines on the column contract less than one-fourth the regular charge. On higher priced papers the proportion remains nearly the same. The above explains the whole mystery. We have yearly contracts with many hundred papers for space, with the privilege of monthly changes, We take the risk of filling the space, we do fill it, and % 1s consequently plain that we can execute orders for advertising at much less than the usual charges. HOW THE PAPERS ARE SELECTED, ‘These papers are selected from the Religious, Agricultural, Literary, Political, Local, Family and Business newspapers of the country, our rule being to take but one in each town or city, and that the one which, all things considered, 1s likely to be of most service to an advertiser in proportion to the price paid. In places where a dally fe issued we give it the preference,'as best calculated to reach the business com- munity, and will be found to be the very best selection as to clreulation, character and influence. THE ENTIRE COUNTRY THE ENTIRE COUNTRY 13 NOW COVERED BY THE 18 NOW COVERED BY THE “LIST SYSTEM." “LIST SYSTEM.” We are now able to receive business on this plan for all sec- tions of the United States, our list comprising the following ‘papers:— Sitti ONE HUNDRED in the New England States, ONE HUNDRED in the State of New York.
