The application of this instrument for this purpose may be understood from the follow- ing description: When the sunlight passes througn prism it is transferred into a beautifull edjband of light, the so-called sular gpectrum When observing this by means of a spectro- scope, a multitude of dark lines are observed. which are called /raunhoferts Lines. These dark lines, which differ in appearance, are tributed to various causes. A consider: pr Ttion of them, Bowever. are produced by ight passing through the atmosphere. They are accordingly most prominent when the sun d they are almost invisible when the ms are made on the top of a high Mountain. Among the lines produced by the earth's atmosphere, some have long ago been to the pre-ence of watery vapor. By observations in localities distuguisbed for a very transparent atmosphere, such as Mar- seilles, Palermo. Athens. and by observations on the summit of Mount Etna. proof bas been obtained ofthe absence of water from the at- mosphere @f the sun, but its presence in the atmospheres of Mars and Saturn. The conciusions drawn from these exper:- ments are given as follows: To the close analo- gies which already unite the planets of our system, & new an@ important character has just been added. All thes= planets form accord- ingly but one family: they revolve around th same central body, giving them heat and lig! The suit was brought for obtaining money under false pre- tences, but after an examination the det t was discharged, on the ground that the mort- gare being on record was sufficient notice to third aud whoever bought the arty took it with proper notice of lien. This prm- ciple has been affirmed by the Supreme Gourt repeatedly. and is settled. The§cause of the trouble and outrages is supposed to have Grown out of the recent fight between the Cheyennes and Pawnees. In the fight the (Cheyennes were worsted, and are supposed to have attacked the settlers out of revenge. Gen. ‘Sheridan bad sent plenty of troops and bad gone in person to that quarter. FRAUD ON THE PENsion UrFice.—On the Yoth instant, Edwin H. Dantrich, of Carroll City, Iowa, was arrested tor fraud on the Pen- sion Office, and brought before United States Commissioner Woodward, at Des Moines City, lowa, and held to bail in the sum of $8,000 for appearance at the Uctober term of the United States District Court. The accused had pre- pared three claims for pension, whieh, on in- vestigation, proved to be entirely false aad fraudulent im their character, the parties therein named haying no existence whatever. Case —Train Seized.—The Alexandria Journal of this morning says: The affairs of this road, which are known to be in & very complicated condi- tion, was the subject of unusuai interest to our citizens last evening, from the fact that the 4:20 tram trom Washington was taken S810 of by Sheriff Steuart, on its arrival at the st Asaph street Depot. As many of our citizeas may not be aware of the present legal status of this road, we give it as we understand it Nearly a year since, Judge Thomas issued an interlocutory order, and appointing Mr. Wm. H. Marbury receiver for this end of the road. From this decree the lessees appealed to the District Court at Fredericksburg, where the decision of Judge Thomas’ Court wasaffirmed. An appeal was then taken to the Sapreme Court of Appeals, where the decree of the Cir- cuit Court was again affirmed. This last de- cision was rendered in May or June last. terday Judge Thomas executed the order of the Supreme Court ot Appesis by issuing a pro- cess, directing the Sheriff of this County to take possession of the road and its rolling stock, and turn the same over to Mr. Marbury. PHILADELPHIA, August 20.—The bronze guns appropriated by Congress to the sixth army corps for a monument at West Point, N. ¥., has been cast into the full length and fig- ure, at the bronze works in this city, of Major Gen.
