With the exception of José Jerewich, who was sentenced to five years’ im- ent and against whom no proof of complicity the assassination was discovered at the trial, all ‘the other accused persons who had been arrested, to the number of fourteen, were condemned to death. Prince Alexander Karageorgewich and his secretary, ‘Triseovioh, and Philip Stankovich, who had not been captured, were sentenced in default to twenty years’ Amprisonment, Au At half-past five the condemned men lert fhe for- ‘tress and proceeded to the place of execution, whic? In order to avoid a large crowd a report had been ‘culated that the execution would take place in evening at six o'clock, whereas it was in the morning that the actual tragedy occurred. But although these circumstances, necessary for causing the longest possible “totality,” did not abso- uvely concur at the Minne of the eclipse of this morn- , all of them did so @ very great and remark- able degree, and therefore the duration. of totality along the central line was in British Judia from five to near six minutes and in the Guif of Siam at noon of the place 6min, 48 sec., which n be con- sidered about as long as it ever will be in any future eclipse. Indeed, so great has been the desire, on this and other accounts, amongst British and Con- tiental astronomers, to observe this eclipse, that two parties have been sent from England under the patronage of the Royal and Astronomical societies for this purpose, amply provided wiih suitable in- struments (especially those necessary for cee and examining the red flames or protuberances, whic! sometimes during totality, have been seen around the moon), who, with many other astronomers, have been scattered along the central line in India, with the hope that the weather will be fayorable at least at some of the stations. Two parties of savans, have also, it is said, been sent from France, and one or two from Germany for tie same purpose. The observations of these astronomers on this eclipse, and especially on the red flames (which have been supposed to be part of the extensive, highly heated, atmosphere of the sun itself), will be looked for with the highest interest by the scientific world, as it is certain that such an eclipse has never been iitherto 60 carefully and generally observed. We have above remarked that the duration of totality in this eclipse where central at noon (6 min, 45 sec.) was as long as probably it ever would be tn any similar eclipse, but ina recent communication to the Royal Astronomical Society of England, a yerman astronomer says, ‘fhe result of the coinci- dence of all the favorable conditions, is an eclipse which as to its size belongs to the largest that can happen in general, and has indeed in the annais of mankind no rival, since in the records of ancient eclipses there are to be found only two which may ba compared with that of August 18, 1868, but none in which the totality lests so long. The first of these is the eclipse of Thales (May 685 B. C.), which is said to have been the first predicted and to have ter- minated a bloody war between the Lydians and the Medes; the second was visible on the 17th of June, 1483, in Scotland, and the time of its occurrence was long remembered by the peopie of that country as the ‘black hour.’ ‘This statement we believe ts not strictly correct but that without examining other eclipses we shal find that the totality (where central at noon) of two or three and perhaps more of the series of eclipses to which the one of this day belongs was quite as long as it was in the Gulf of Siam this morning. Of the returns of this eclipse on July 4, 1796, (when the sun’s diameter was a minimum) and on July 16, 1814, we have no account, but on that of July 27, 1832, there was @ partial obscuration of the sun throughout the Unitod States. viz:—in Boston about a third and at Key West, Fiorida, about five-sixths, ‘The centre of the shadow touched the earth in the Pacific ocean in latitude 14 deg. north, longitude 98 deg. west, thence passed over Mexico, the southeastern extremity of Cuba, near Santiago, to Africa, which it reached at 1 hour 17 minutes local solar time, in latitude 21%; deg. north, longitude 17 deg. west. At 1 hour 5@ minutes 41 seconas (m. t. G.) it was central at noon tn latitude 24 deg. 44 min. north, longitude 2814 deg. west, and at2 houra 1 minute 52 seconde (m. t. G., in latitude 24 deg. 33 min. north, tongitude 27 deg. west, on a line with these places injthe Atlantic, which are about midway between the Canary and Cape Verde Islands), and with the moon at an alti. tude of 85 deg., its augmented diameter exceeded ‘that of the sun by 147.4 sec., which, divided by 21.69 sec. (the then apparent motion of the moon from the sun in Inge oven in one minute of time) gives for the duration of totality 6 hours 48 minutes, exactly the same 9s where longest this morning. At next return of this eclipse on August 7, 1850, there was a very small obscuration only in the southwest part of the United States (Texas, Califor- nia, &c.,) but the eclipse was central at noon in the ific Ocean, in latitude 17 deg. 50 min. north, lon- ritude 142 deg. west, with the moon there only 117 leg. from the zenith; #0 that the duration of totality there appears to have been quite 6 min. 45 sec. At the next return, on August 29, 1886, the centre of the shadow will pass several degrees south of its course in 1832, indeed the line of the northern limit of the eclipse will hardly reach New Hampshire, and in Boston at half-past six A. M., there will be only a slight indentation in the dise of the sun-the diameter of which will be about 4 sec. greater than thia morning, thus di- minishing the duration of totality where the eclipse 1s cent ‘at noon (latitude 5)¢ degs. north, longitude 14 degs, west), near Monrovia and Sierra Leone, in Africa, with the moon's altitude 84 degs.), to about 6 min. 35 sec., but only 11 sec., less thut of this morn- ing. = TOTAL ROLIPSES OF THR IN THE UNITED STATES, During the last ninety years the shadow of the moon has only twice over the Atlantic United States; in the next thirty-two years, or in the re- matnder of the nineteenth century, it will again pass over them twice and once over Texas, ‘The first of the four occurred on June 16, 1806, on ashort time before noon, the centre of ro- duced here that most glorious total obscuration of five minutes’ duration, so weil remembered and spoken of with so much enthuslasm by those of the fortu- nate spectators yet living. The moon was near the earth and the sun so remote that the apparent diameter of the former exceeded that of the sun 118 sec., and the width of the shadow was about 160 miles, or 75 miles on each side of the central path. All of the four contacts were carefully observed by the few astronomers then among us, and especialiy by the 1ate Dr. Bowditch, at his residence in our neigtiboring city of Salem. At the third return of this eclipse, on July 18, 1460, the centre of the shadow passed over Washington ‘Territory (at sunrise) to Hudson's Bay and Labrador, thence west of Ireland to the northern coast of Spain, where it was observed by many distinguished Eng- lish and French astronomers. At its fourth return, on July 29, 1878, the path of the shadow will, we be- Heve, from British Columbia over Montana and Colorado to the southeast part of Texas and the Gulf of Mexico, ‘The second of the four was on November 30, 1834. ‘The shadow then reached the earth in Alaska, until very recently “Russian America,” in latitude 62%, deg. north, longitude 135 deg. west, thence passed to Kansas (where, in latitude 40 deg., longitude 101 deg., it was central at noon) and over Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and South Carolina. At Beaufort, 8. C., where the eclipse was central, the duration of totality was 1 minute, 49.6 seconds (3 minutes 6 seconds longer than computed), a short time only, but long enough to cause your corre- spondent then and ever since to consider this spec- tucte the most sublime and magnificent of all pheno- mena. ‘The third will take place next year inthe afternoon of Saturday, A it 7, 1860, when the shadow will again pass over Alaska and Western British America to Montana, and thence to North Carolina, and it will leave the co:itinent near Beauf in that State. This eclipse will be central at noon, with a duration of to- tality of 4 minutes fn latitude 62 deg. (neat Mount St. Elias). Near Des Moines, duration will be 3 minutes, and a little south of Raletgh, N. C., 2minutes 27 seconds. This eclipse will without doubt cause much excitement in lowa, Iilinoia, Kentucky, &c., and many of our astrono- ‘haps some from abroad, will take po- sitions ee or cr ty A the facie wR = servii regretted tha fauitude and longitude of Des Moines and Bur- lington, To Macomb and Al ind.; Loutaville, Ky., the ae of the centre), should not b cou rately known, as the very nearly exact geograph' position of any place is absolutely necesary for the computation of a solar eclipse therefor.
