——_—_—. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Tuvespar, Oct 17—6 P. M. The gold market hag been strong and, on the whole, rather active to-day. The opening transactions were ‘at 143, from which point there was a nearly steady ad- ‘Vance to 1443, influenced mainly by cable telegrams Feporting the London stock market lat and indicating the possibility of an ocoupation of Rome by the French. ‘The price afterwards relapsed, however, and the closing transactions in the room were 14414, but subsequently on the street the quoiations sdeanced to 144%. There ‘Wasavery active demand for cash gold and loans ‘wore made at 3, 1-16, 1-32, 3-32, 1-64, 8.64 and 5-22 per Cent per diem, respectively, in favor of the lender of the ‘com, The gross clearings amounted to $64,272,000, the gold balances to $659,649, and the currency Dalances to $1,182,546, The steamer Weser took out $1,200 im specie, It is telegraphed from Washington that the November in- terest on the gold bearing bonds will aggregate $24,900,000 and that the disbursement will be dis- ‘tributed thus:—At New York, $17,429,501; Boston, $2,910,351; Philadelphia, $2,359,591 50; Baltimore, $052,016 50; Washington, D. ©., $258,439 50; Cincin- natl, $194,752; St, Louls, $94,772; Chicago, $128,709; Pittsburg, $10,422; Now Orieans, $13,937; Buffalo, N. ¥., $9,865 60; Charleston, $3,058; San Francisco, $3,585. The effect of this payment has already been discounted, and a very large “short” interest has been created. Most of the speculative brokers are operating on the bear side, but the strong houses are buyers of gold, and the tendency of the premium ts upward. Speculation on the Stock Exchange is hesitating in its Course, and the railway share market is gradually losing the support of the street, The bull cliques, however, show resolution in carrying out their plans, and, not- ‘withstanding the existing monetary activity, the crea- tion of = considerable “sbort’’ interest would probably ead to strong efforts being made to further advance Prices, The bull cliques appear to be weil supplied with money ; but the fact of the supply in the open market being limited causes the commission houses to throw thelr influence, to some extent, against the bull move- ment, both by dissuading their customers from buying ‘and being more exacung than usual as to margins. A severe break in the ‘railway share market is gene- rally expected before the year closes, by the bulls as woll as the bears; but wide differ. ences of opinion exist as to the particular time when it will occur; and, meanwhile, all who are “long” of stocks expect to sell out before the crash comes. It is only a question of time, however, and therefore the risk attending the purchase of speculative securities at present prices is obviously great; and this is particularly the case with regard to the stocks which are the most inflated, like New York Central, Hudson River and Northwestern, The latter are disproportion- ately high when compared with Fort Wayne, Cleveland and Pittsburg and afew others on the list, But all the Speculative shares are dear im comparison with govern- ‘mont securities, which yield a better income upon the Anvestment at the current prices than any others dealt in Op the Stock Exchange, | The money market was very active, the supply being ‘hardly equal to the demand, The rate for call loans, whether on governments or mixed collaterals, was seven por cent in currency, with exceptional transac- tions at this rate in gold. The pressure upon the banks for discounts continues unabated, but only a small por- tion even of the best grade of commercial paper offering is taken. The rate is seven percent at the banks, but bill brokers are offered 8 a 9 per cent, and in some instances 3 mach as ten percent is paid for discounts of good Paper. The depressed condition of trade makes both she banks and private lenders extremely cautious in ‘their scrutiny of names, The stock market was weak and unsettled at the com- ‘mencement of business, under sales vo realize, and at the early session of the open board New York Central wold at 1123 a 112% ; Erie, 715; @ 719 ; Reading, 10134; Michigan Southora, 80% a 81; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 83%; Rock Island, 97% a 975;; Northweetera, 45% a 45%; do. preferred, 66%; Fort Wayne, 101; Western Union Telegraph, 3334 a 34; Pacific Mail, 148% 0 140, At the first regular board railway shares continued to decline, There was unusual activity in Pacifico Mail, which opened at 160, but declined on the call to 14734. ‘There is a brisk demand for the stock in anticipation of the annual election which will take place on November ‘21, and.ea-effort will then be made to change the board of directors, the present management of the company being, it is contended by the opposition, inimical in many respects to the interests of the stockholders Now York Central closed 1 lower than at the same time yesterday, Erie %, Reading {, Michigan South- ern 23, Cleveland and Pittsburg 1, Rock Island %, Northwestern preferred 5, Fort Wayne 5, Milwaukee and St. Paul preferred 134, Quicksilver 11¢, Western Union Telegraph %. Northwestern was 3< higher, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 3, Pacific Mail 1, Atlantic Mail %. Government securities were steady at yoster- day morning's prices, but 3 a % lower than those cur- rent in the afternoon. Ten-forties were ¢ lower, and weven-thirtios, of the second series, 3¢ higher. The State stocks were steady. At the open board at one o'clock the market was drooping and the speculative feolieg continued tame, The volume of business was rather light, but weil dis- tributed. Now York Ceutral sold at 112; Erie, 71; Had son River, 126; Reading, 1013; Michigan Southern 805, ; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 8355; Rock Isiand, 974; Northwestern, 4644; do. preferred, 66% a 667%; Fort ‘Wayne, 99%; Pacific Mail, 1464; Western Union Tel @ Graph, 3374 a 33%. At the second regular board the market was firmer in tone, and prices advanced on the call. New York Cen- tral closed 3; higher than at the first regular board, Michigan Southern %, Northwestern %, do. preferred 56, Fort Wayne 3g, Milwaukee and St. Paul preferred 1, Pacific Mail 3. Atlantic Mail was 34 lower, Quicksilver 1}. Government securilies were heavy, and coupon five-twenties of 1862 closed 3% lower, issue of 1865 4, now issue of 1807 3, seven-thirties, second series, \. New issue of 1865, coupons, were higher. Tennessee sixes, new, advanced }¢. Owing tw doubts as to the payment of the next half-yearly interest on the bonds of this State and large ‘short’ sales, the price has de- clined to 6954 for the new issue, At the open board at half-past three the market was steady. Now York Central sold at 112% (b. 3); Erie, T1K; Reading, 1013¢ 10154; Michigan Southern, 815; Rock island, 975; ; Northwestern, 46% a 46% ; do. pre- ferred, 67% 0 6734; Fort Wayne, 100 (b. 3); Western Union Telegraph, 3454 a 345;. During the remainder of ‘the afternoon the market was rather jieavy, and @tsix o'clock the following quotations were current:— New York Contral, 112% @ 112%; Erie, 714 a 71%; Hudeoa River, 127 0 128; Reading, 101 a 10114; Michi- gan Southern, 81 6 8114; Cleveland and Pittsburg, 833¢ 9 83% ; Rook Island, 0795 a 9734; Fort Wayne, 99% a 100; Northwestern 46 a 46%; do. preferred, 66% 67; Pacific Mail, 14814 0 148 3g; Ohio and Mississippi certif- cates, 2634 © 265; Western Union Telegraph, 34; ao 84%; Canton, 43)¢ a 44; Cumberland, 28 a 29; Quick. Gilver, 2134 @ 22; Mariposa preferred, 16% a 1724. « The bears in government securities resumed their operations this morning, and, assisted by lower foreign quotations for consols and five-twenties, prices declined. ‘There was no pressure to sell from outside sourcea, how- ever, aud the present low quotations are inducing purchases of five-twenties for shipment by the foreign bankers in anticipation of a speedy Tecovery from the prevailing speculative depres. aion, At the close the market was heavy at the mubjoined quotations:—Rogistered, 1881, 111 a 111%; coupons, 1851, 111% a 111%;; 5-20's, registered, 1802, 11396 a 11446 ; 5-20's, coupon, 1862, 11145 #111 ; 5-20's, “Coupon, 1864, 1083, = 1035; ; 5-20’s, coupon, 1865, 1083, 9 108%; do, do, January and July, 106% a 106%; 5-20's, coupon, 1967, 106%; 3 1065{; 10-40°s, registored, 100% & 100%; 10.40’s, coupon, 100% a 100%; June 7.90, 104% @ 104%; July 7.30's, 1045; » 104%; De- eomber do, do,, 119%; May do., 1865, 117% a 117%; August do. do,, 116% 0 116%; Sepiember do, do., 115% 9116; October do. do., 11514 a 115%, The loading drawers in England reduced their rate for bills at sixty days to 109% this morning, but second hand sales were made as low as 108%. This decline was considered to be partly speculative, ite purpose being to enable certain parties to buy bills at the advanced quote tions preparatory to an advance in the rates, The market for both sterling and continental bills was dull, and in the latter there was no material change. Bankers’ bills on England at sixty days were quoted at 1037 8 109; at three days, 109% a 1003¢; Commercial bills, 1089 109%¢; bills on Paris at sixty days, 5.18% © 6.16%; at three days, 6.15 = 6.14%.
