SPECIAL CORRESPONDENCE OF THE HERALD. Puwaperrata, Oct, 12, 1867. You were informed yesterday by telegram that at tbe meeting of the return judges yesterday a namber of the democratic judges fied a protest against ihe recop- tion and counting of certain military votes trom Fort Delaware, on the ground of their illegality. Samuel P, Hancock, president of the judges, then stated that the Board was merely @ ministerial body, incompetent to Pass upon the question of the logality of the returns, Immediately afterwards an application was male be- fore Judge Thompson for a preliminary injunction to re- grain the judges from counting their votes, and the injunction was granted. Subsequentiy to the granting of the injunction the returns were sent to the office of the Prothonotary of the Court of Common Pleas, and a copy of them, It is surmised, was sent to the Secretary of the State, at Harrisburg. The matter, under the litle of William H. Leech vs, Samuel P. Hancock et al., was brought before the court im the shape of a conirmation of the injunction, in order that it might not expire at the end of five days for want of expre seion of the intention of the plaintiffs to pres the matter, Sr. William S Hirst, on the part of the plaintiffs, proposed to go into a bearing of the mattor; but Judge Thompson, upon learning that the defendants had not received full and proper not ice of it, would not permit it to bo had, He said that in so grave and serious a matter the Court could not act too carefully and so- lemoly, and it would be improper to proceed without the defendavts having ample notice to appear. Mr. Hirst then moved for pormission to amend the plaintift’s bill by an additional allegation of the fraudu- leucy of the proceedings on the part of the defendanis, and the forgery of the papers, ‘The jadge replied that if no one appeared to oppose the application the amendment should be granted. No one made any remonstrance, the defeadants not be- ing represented by counsel, and therefore the amena- ment was made. Taor, Oct. 12, 1867. ‘The reception accorded to Major General Phil Sheridan by the municipal authorities of this city to-day was an immense popular demonstratien, far exceeding in num- bers and enthusiasm the most ardent anticipations of all concerned in the welcome. The auccess of the reception was doubtless due to the universal understanding that, unlike the visit and welcome to Albany, the Trojan we'- come would be wholly and uncompromisingly divested of ali political complexion and bearing. Indeed, Gene- ral Sheridan himeelf expressly stipulatea with Mayor Flagg that in the event of his consenting to visit Troy politics and all possible allusions to party should be absolutely “and rigidly forborne. Farly in the forenoon the troops began to make ready for the parade, and cons’sted of portions of three regi- ments of Brigadier General Alonzo Alden's brigade of Major General Joseph B, Carr's division of the New York State National Guard. General Sheridan, accompanied by Colonel Schuyler Croaby, adjutant general on bis staff, and his personal aid’, arrived at the residence of Mayor Jebn L. We are very glad tnat you have headed her up stream ; for we bave ho less admiration and respect for you than they and quite as much eagerness to do honor lo the general who roae, In the history which you have been making we bave writeu your name in le ters of gold, and bigh up m tae eternal arch of glory you have cut it for yourself, lf ever you need us be. sure we shall not forget what the country*owes you.
