NEW YORK HERALD, TUESDAY, eturm of the Queem of Tragedy md Comedy. ADRIENNE LECOUVREUR, ‘A New Part, a Brilliant Audience and Another Triumph. &e. &e, &e. Having concluded her series of performances at Bos- ton, where she achieved unprecedented successes, Ristor! “uas returned to the metropolis, and last evening she commenced her second season here with an Italian trans- ‘lation of Adrienne Lecouvreur, French wit translated Into the Italian language and gravély recited before an ‘Bnglish audience loses much of its charm, like » butter- vy too roughly handled; consequently all the comedy portions of the play last night were very coldly received ‘by the audience, except when Ristori herself spoke the ‘words, and we may dismiss the other actors and actresses with the single observation that they were all remark- ably dull exceps Signor But! (Michonet), who was remark- ably excellent, Fortunately, however, the audience came only to hear Ristori, and a most brilliant audience it was, Ristori bas crossed the Rubicon. Her success is no longer an sMair of ouriosity. The subscription for the second sea- son has exceeded that for the frst season, when she had just arrived and her great reputation was the attraction. Now the public find a still greater attraction in her act- ing, which surpasses all that her reputation had led usto expect. The house was all sold in advance of last even- ing’s performance. Extra rows of seats had been placed ‘m the aisles, but even these were all taken. The display of toileties was superb. In point of numbers, beauty, in- telligence and appreciation the audience was fully equal to that which welcomed the Queen of Tragedy and Com- ‘*dy upon her first appearance here. Although in several scenes of Elizabeth Ristori ®owed us that she was equally unapproachable in cmmedy as in tragical réles, yet Adrienne Lecouvreur may be considered her comedy début. Our public are Vey familiar with this play. Rachel bas played it here swerbly, and many of our best actresses have appeared inthe English translations. Some of thom have ren- ord the part of the heroine almost as well as Mrs, Boring, who brought the tears to Rachel’s own eyes fn \ondon. But Ristori is as easily queen in this ss i, every other réle In the second act her itwrviews with Michonet and with /Maurice, and ‘ge bits of recitation which are 20 beautifully intepolated, were admirable. In the ‘third aot the difficult ind effective scenes at the Prince's Bupper developed Ristiys very best powers. At the conclusion of the fourth act the audience burst into a morm of applause. The tuching death scene of act fifth was the climax of theatriq) art, Had Ristori been more strogiy supported—had the part of Maurice been intrusted to ler hands—the play would have been even more enthusiagically received; but ‘as It was Ristoridid all the acting, wd the triumph is complotely her own. After sceing herin Sgedy she seems Nke another person in comedy. The coapiex passions of the part are suggested rather than declined. No point ts exaggerated ; there 1s not the slightest straming after effect. Her ‘love is as gentle as that of thi dove, to which she compares herself.
