2 "FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. * — Twerspay, Sept. 13—6 P.M. The chief interest of the stock market to-day has been centred in Erie, and the fact of the transfer books of the company closing at two o'clock induced apprehensions that the stock would decline afterwards, and this respited im an unsettled state ef feeiimg, but as the contrary proved to be the case the speculative feeling became stronger and more decided late in the afternoon, and the market closed firmatn slight advance. There can be but one honest opinion about its probable future course in view of all the circumstances and conditions affect- img it, At this season the earnings of the ‘main lines of railway usually begin to experience a con- siderable increase in consequence of the moving of the crops, and the abundant harvost of the present year is favorable to amore than average large fall traffic At the same time we are assured of a remarkably easy money market for an indefinite period to come, The drain of currency from the East to the West has already been sufficient to place the Iatier section of thecoun- tryin a moderately easy position, and the Chicago journals report that currency is already returaiag’from the interior to which it was sent at the commencement of the harvesting of the crops. There is now no doubt but that within a very. short time the Treasary will announce that it is prepared to redeem the outstanding four per Cent temporary deposits or Clearing House certificates. If we may depend upon the item of “temporary loan” in the last debt state- ment, these amount, to $45,539,000, The banks are averse to the contemplated movement of Mr. McOulloch, * and some of their number have suggested his redeeming them in four instalments, In anticipation of this re- demption a demand for compound interest notes—to be used in the piace of certificates, as a reserve—has sprung up, and they have advanced accordingly. The banks are gon>rally willing to lend to good houses at four per cent on call, but for small amounts they ask five. Om the whole the latter may be consid- ered an exceptional rate, There is not much activity 4m the discount line, owizg to the limited amount of commercial paper offering. The best grade, at sixty ant Bivety days, is taken at Ga 6 per cent, and the se ond at 6a7. Six months’ paper, of which there is float, 4s not iu favor, as the stato of trade and lits i3 not considered to require or justify it. Such paper is almost invariably drawn by houses here for their own accom- modation, and 18 not sir“! y lsna fide, The banks, with- out exception, repor: a very easy money market, and generally look forward to its continuance confidently during th t three months at least, At the curly session of the open board the market was generally sieady, but Erie dectined to 715. At the first regular board Erie was active, and declined on the call from 71% to 71, closing 13{ lower than at the same time yesterday. Notwithstanding, the stock was acarce for d:livery, and that one firm offered to pay one- half per cent for the loan of every hundred shares de- livered to them before noon. It is supposed that the house im question succeeded in borrowing about ton thousand shares at this rate, the object being, of course, to have it transferred to 1 own names before the closing of the transfer the company this after- noon, and 80 to col upon it. The geverai ould decline upon the closing of the books," influenced holders of Eric to sell, and also encouraged @ “short” ixterost of soine Magnitude, Had those who borrowed the tock for transfer with a view to lection prrposes attemptéd to buy ap eqmal quentity they would have assuredly advanced the price materially during the proces, but they avoided this by borrowing, and. served their own ends equally well It is not unlikely that, there will still bean active demand for stock carrying proxies up to the day of the cloction, Hudson River Closed 34 lower, Reading 1{, Michigan Southern %5 Clevelond and Pittsburg %, Northwestern 34—preferred » Fort Wayne i. New York Central was strong, the mand being by some attributed to the desire of one. portion of the management to so strengthen itself as to de enabled to readjust the rates at which the freight of express compaties is carried; while the ‘Wayne {. New York Central*was strong, apd-closed ‘12g higher. The demand for the stock 1s supposed to be partial y owing to preparations for a contest in the com- pany relative to the readjustment of the rates at which the freight of express companies 48 carried, @ portion of the management at present being favorable to a higner scale, while the other portion, representing the express interest, is opposed to’any change from the highly favor able terms on which the express companies are now per- mittod to use the line. If the railways of the country had been properly managed from the beginning express com- panies would never have had an existence otherwixo than as forwarding agents, paying (he usual rates to the rail- ‘way companies, like Pickford & Co., in the United King- dom. As it is in thie country tho express cothpanies got the cream of railway profits and constitute a rich mo- nopoly, paying enormous dividends to their stockholders at the expense of those of the railways, The time may come when railway companies will see the advantage of Feaping the profit of thoir own busincss, The other ebanges in the liet were an advance in Chicago and Great Eastern of 4, Obio and Mississippt certificates 34, Quicksilver 1, Canton 4, Cumberland 3, Mariposa pre- ferred %%, Western Union Tel securities were heavy. Coupon five-twenties of 1862 were 34 lower, ten-furtics 34, seven-thirty notes of the first series 4, second series . In State stocks Now York vixes of 1873 were 4 higher and North Carolina new bonds }; lower, Tennesece sixes (new) were steady at 71K. At the one o'clock session? the market was dull and a fraction lower on a portion of the list. At tho half-past two board Erie and Hudson River were steady at the closing prices at the first roguiar board, New York Con- tral was % lower, Reading \, Michigan Southern %, Cleveland and Pittsburg 3¢, Rock Island 33, Northwestern preferred \, Fort Wayne %, Western Union Tele- raph The business in government securities was Tight. Coupon five-twoutios of 1862 advanced 3%. Seven-thirty notes of the third series were steady. At the open board, at three o'clock, the market ‘was rather heavy, and Evie sold at 7134; Rock Island 20834, and Michigan Southern 823%. An upward reac- tion succeeded and the market closed firm, the quota thons at haif-past five being as under:—New York Cen- tral, 1057; a 105; Erie, T1°Y a 72; Reading, 114% a 115; ‘Michigan Southern, 82% « %; Mlinois Central, 122% a 12234; Cloveiand and Pittsburg, 8634 a %; Northwest- orn, 84% a %; Northwestern preferred, 6834 a 06; Rock Island, 1055 a 1%; Fort Wayne, 10434 a 3¢; Cumber- land, 4616 47; Quic ksilver, 53 a %%; Mariposa preferred, BOSZ a 36: WestgUnion Telegraph, 58% a 59. Compound interest notes wore quoted thus by the Jending dealers at the close:—June, 1864, 116. aX; July, 1864, 1153; « 11524; Angust, 1864, 118 a 1{; October. 1864, 114.4 4; December, 1864, 118.0 4; May, 1965, 111 , 1885, 1005¢ 0 109%; September, 1866, 100 October, 1865, 1084 a 108%. ‘Tue gold market has been quiet. The opening price was 14614, followed by @ decline to 145%, hear which port it remained steady during the rest of the day, closing at 14534 4. Loana were generally made flat, the oxcep- ons to which were at 1-82 per cent in favor of the lender, There is a large outstanding “short”? in terest, but the bulls are Joaniog their coin freely, The telegraph reports a farther shipment of £101,000 in specie from England for this tountry, But these shipments at the present of exchange here must net a loss to the siuprers, the gold is to pay for bills which were bought before the recent rise in exchange, With bankers’ sixty days’ bills on Londou selling at over 106% in New York, puch shipments are clearly unprofitable, and are, there. Fore, likely to coane. Meanwhile thelr Influence is un Smportant, and they wili hasten the resumption of specie about a+ much as importing so much jewelry. 1 The foreign exchange market has been leas active than yesterday, but the leading drawors avked 10734 for their bills on England at #ixty days, and 108% a 44 for those * pt short sight, “ ‘The quotations for Americnn securities in London yer. forday and at the previous dates mentioned were as ender :— Central: Brie at 44 in London, with gold at 146 here, is equival. to about 724 in this marker. \ Mining stocks were strong and active.
