—_— FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Monpay, July 30-6 P. M. The chief topic of the day has been the Atlantic cable; the success of which gives the highest satisfaction, and fhas tended with the prospects of peace in Germany to give a new etimulus to the speculative activity of Wall street which is more lively and better sustained than it has been for some time past, The money market con- ‘timues extremely eagy, and five per cent is the highest fate for call loana, A considerable number of transac- tions are reported at four and even at lower rates. There is euch an abundance of capital seeking employment on @all that the lending institutions bave no small difficulty te find an outlet for their idle balances. Another reason for the ease is the general confidence which prevails, Bvery one seems to anticipate that there is to be a very ‘extraordinary amount of activity in the fall trade. It is §n this general security that one of the chief dangers of the situation lies, A third and very active cause of the plethora of the loan market is the over-abundant sup- ply of ourrency at the financial centres. Many of our ‘anks are so loaded up with the national bank notes that {8 requires the most skilful management to get nd of them without less. Hence large holders, in not a few in- Mances, are compelled to lend them for ten days without imterest on condition that the loan shall be repaid in greenbacks. Loans for a longer time on the same con- @itions are making at 2 a 4 per cent. The discount demand is very limited, and good bills continue scarce, Obolee names pass at 5}; a 634. Phe stock market opened this morning with a very ~eetive demand for government securities, based on the ‘gews by the China of another advance in five-twenties 0a the 2iat inst. on the London Btock Exchange. Early this morning sales of old five-twenties were made as high 98109. At the board the sales were not so large as was anticipated, and the prices made were 105% a 108%. This shows an advance of about 1}¢ per cont since Sat- urday. In five-twentios of 1364 there was nothing do- img, but those of 1865 advanced to 106% a 106%. The ten-fortics were in moderate demand, and rose to 98%, vand the seven-thirties to 10454 a 104%. Atthe one o'clock session old five-twenties sold at 10854, being a recession of \ per cent from the morn- img quotation. Bonds of 1865 wore done at 1063s, while ten-forties closed firm at 98%. Railroad shares are frm, Rock Island advancing tv 102, Toledo to 11544, and Fort ‘Wayne to102 The business was large in Northwestern Preferred, which sold up to 6634, and in Erie, which closed at 6555. At the half-past two o'clock regular board governments swore steady at the quotations, but there was no activity. ‘The railroad list exhibited some buoyancy, Erie rising to 6%, Rock Island to 10244, and New York Central to 10634. The three o'clock open board was the most a) mated of a!l the sessions during the day, and there was a wpemeral advance of prices. The heaviest transactions were in Erie, Pittsburg, Toledo and Northwestern pre- ferred. ‘Mt belf-past five P. Too Mucu ror RapicaL Bostox.—Among the visitors whom the summer has brought to Boston is a Liberian family of wealth and position, proposing to travel through America, and expecting certainly to Bnd a hos- pttable welcome {n Boston, if nowhere else, They travel in luxurious style, ne ied by their servanta, se ral degrees blacker than themaclves. They stopped here at the Marlborough Hotel, recommended to them as the most liberal in the city. ‘But after a stay of only one day they were called on by the landlord and intormea that he could not permit them tosit at his public table, ‘on account of the prejudices of his customon. He gen erously offered to send meala to their rooms; but this erclusion the proud spirits of the Liberians could not brook, and they left the house. Not another place in the fanatical city of Boston could be found to shelter them, and they sought refuge in a boarding house at Satem. Even here the apiritof caste pursues then, and the preesure from her other guosts has compeiled the landlady to ask them to sit at « second and separate table, They are both astonished and grieved at this dis play of popular sentiment in what they had expected to find a democratic locality, Being told, and truly, that @ far worse treatment would meet them at Niagara, the White Mountains, and other resorts of fashion and con- sorvatism, they are contemplating, I believe, an immo- diate return to their own country, froma land which offers them nothing but insults.
