OUR WHITE MOUNTAINS CORRESPONDENCE. ry Mowwtains, July 19, 1866, ‘We arrived here from Montreal via Littleton yestor- ‘Gay afternoon. After eo jong and tiresome « journey We wore glad to find a comforiable resting place, where, ‘without giviog ourselves much additional fatigue, we poald enjoy some of the finest econery in the world. short rest wo ‘allied out for a walk to the ‘Taking the pat! leading to Beecher's Falls, we strolled along by the bed of the brook for» mile @nd a half till we reached (oe high rock, from which the ‘water is precipitated over « fall of from thirty to forty Foot. As we came Jn view of it we found » crowd on the piazza, all evi- ly in a state of eager expectation, Sepposing that ething of importance had occurred, we inquired the use of it, and were informed that it was ly the |g ‘arrival of the stage that created the commo- for the Brariie , sorsmunll are the events beg, Eng ay spots cite the interest of peop'e y jJumbering Fence nfull tien, sua the passencers Ld in full , Pertterchient nad basrayiag the most pleasurable excite. ent, I held breath, Lang Be ny 3 to ree the wily laden couch topple over, but the driver was an old at (he reins, and he dashed up in grand style to the of the hotel, where hearty embraces between the comers and their expectant friends, wound up the fut door incidenta of the evening. Towards nine o'clock the sound of the parlor led mein NEW YORK HERALD, TUESDAY, JULY 31, 1866—TRIPLE SHEET. for the road, to answer their eager questions and give all the instructions ni before starting; but all this the two guides accompli in a good humored and off band manner, and at last the cavaloade set out. We pro- ceeded in single file, the horses moving at a slow e, which I found du!! enough work as long as the lay bh the woods, but as soon ag we fairl; wo ascend Mount Clinton the aspect of things c! the road, or rather path, became steep and precipitous, and excitement succeeded to the previous feeling of indil- ference. Here and there we got a fine view, lasting only for a second, however, for the heat was intense, and the black flies became very troublesome, The guides com- forted us by the assurance that we would soon be half frozen and would wish ourselves back in our nt temperature, but this did not reconcile us anyth! the more to it, At last we emerged from woods into an open space at the summit of Mount Ctinfon, and made a halt for the guides to examine the horses’ feet. Ono or two needed shoeing, an operation which was performed on the spot, The scene just then became exceeding), picturesque. I wished myself an artist in order ‘that T might preserve a sketch of it fuller and more gatisfac- tory than the pen and ink one I am now attempting. ‘The party in the first place looked like a group of gypsies about to encamp. The ladies had borrowed or hired old calico skirts at the hotel to put over their dresses, and had fastened them down at the knees with cords, which gave them a ry appearance. Others who had wisely consulted the chambermaids on the subject had provided themselves with count straw hats, which were tied do at the sides wit strips of red flannel. The ornamental had evidently not been studied, but the effect was sufficiently picturesq: The horses ‘were pitiable looking objects, and, it was plain, did not appreciate the fun of the thing. In a short time we made a fresh start and feeling invigorated by the clear bracing atmosphere, | went ahead. The path ran along a level line on Mount Pleasant for some distance and [ tried to have a trot, but the poor beast on which I was mounted could neither be coaxed nor driven out of a walk. If he was not fast, however, he was safe, and his good qualities shone out when we’ be- gan to ascend Mount Franklin. The path became fear- fully steep and the horses in ascending the rocks often times stood almost upright; again they would plu down steep deacents, even to look down which was enough to make the most courageous tremble. So great was the excitement, however; so bracing the atmosphere avd so keen the enjoyment of the scenery that the most timid seemed devoid of fear. I waiched the different members of the party with curi- osity under these intluences, The dull had become gay aud eager, the most stupid even made brilliant sallies ‘The atmosphere had by this time become intensely cold, tho wind bad risen and the petticoats and hoad gear which were supposed to have been securely fastened down, had broken loa and were wafted about atthe mercy of the breeze. These little accidents, however, were disregarded, und each fresh mishap became a’ subject for a fresh burst of merriment. We pressed vigorously on, passing occa- sionally through clouds which descended the mountain like a dense fog, drenching and blinding us as if with a shower, and again emerging into bright sunlight, For tunately, the horses needed no guiding; mine was even blind of one eye, yet it never made a false step, Oc sionally, at som} fearfully steep spot, it would halt and examine the ground carefuily, then down would go one foot, and the other, held for few seconds in the air, would at Inst descend upon the first, and crouching down, the hind feet would be brought so close to the fore ones that the animal would appear to be sitting up right, like a cat—a comparison more correct than. ele t. As we approached the suminit of Mouut hington, we entered a heavy biack cloud. horses toiled steadily in the darkness the steep ascent, and the atmosphere be. that’ we could scarcely breathe. up came so raritied At jast we reached the top aud for some minutes | could only gasp, but after a while thia unpleasant sensavion pared off, and I climbed the rocks to the “Sunmit louse,” eager for zy nner, my appetite having been arpened to a degree that only such toil ean ensure. The ‘Summit’’ ts alow building of native rock with nearly a flat roof securely fastened by heavy iron cbayns passed over the top to protect it from the winds, We bad scarcely taken our seats for the meal when the ery of “clear, clear,’ caused every one to rush from the house but in au instant the view again became clouded and w returned to the tadle, where I need not say we did full Justice to the viands suchas they were. In about half an hour the clouds dispersed and we had an uninterrupt- ed viow for hours of a wide oxtent of country, including Portland, Bartlett, © Mouut Mansfeld, Camel's Hump, &. It would be tinpossible to immagine anything Surpassing in grandour the scone thus presented to our view. Words would fail to describe it even had I com mand of them. It is only from the works of such ar- tists as Gignoux, Church and Blerstadt that some idea can be formed of it, but even they fail to convey to the mind any adequate notion of the sublimity of the spec- tacle. It must be seen to be properly appeeciated, and nce seen the impressions that it leaves cau never be effaced. POLITICAL NEWS.
