M. 100 as yong 1c ar iy a Gold experienced a further sharp upward tarn to-day, the price having risen steadily from 143% at the opening of businessdo 146%, after which it roiapsed to 1457. It then recovered to 146% and finally closed at 146%. Forcign exchange was at the same time very firm and active on the basis of 109% a 110 for bankers’ bills om England at sixty days, and 1114, a \ at short sight. On the Stock Exchange the railway speculation showed increased strength and prices sdvauced with two or threo exceptions, Erie was largely dealt in and well supported, while the stock was in such active borrowing demand that 14 per cent was in many instances paid tor tho loan of it. Reading ad Fort Wayne were strong, but Michigan Southern was barely steady, mnot- withstanding its largely increased earnings, as compared with those of ‘est year, Tho whole market, however, appears to bo rising, and the strongest argument in favor of a tise is that based upon the advance in gold, which has lowered the specie value of every stock on the list, and in order to adjust prices upon their former basis with gold at 280, a rise of 4a 10 per cent is necessary inall the leading railway shares It will moreover be surprising if, with the provailing monetary ease, something approaching to this doos not take place. At the early session of the open board the market was firmyut duil, Erie, after selling at the Fifth Avenue Hotel Ime evening as higeas 6534, was dealt ;in at 64 4. Newyork Central sold at 9854, Roading 109%, Michigan Southen 3034, Rork Island 93, Cleveland and Pittsburg 8544 »3¢,Northwestorn 233; a %—preferred 59 a 44, Canton 5974, Cumberland 47, Mariposa preferred 2434. At tho first regular board \ue market was steady, Now York Central closed 3 hight than at the half-past two board yesterday, Erie 1%, Rtgx Island %, North- western preferred 34, Fort Wayne X, Cumberland 1%§ Reading was 34 lower, Cleveland and Vittsburg 4, Mis- Souri State sixes ¥, Government secuXties were with- out change, At the onoo’clock sessions the market wig quiet but firm, At the alf-past two board it was somewhat irregu- lar. Now York Central closed 4 higher than at the first regular board, Rock Island 34, North western 1—preferret 14, Ohio and Missisaippi certifientes 4. Erie showed 4 decline of 114, Michigan Southern 3, Illinois Central %, Hoveland and Pittsburg §, Fort Wayne %, Cumberlind, 34, Western Union Telegraph 1. Government seerrities were dull but steady, excepting coupon five-twexties of 1862, which declined 3. At the half-past three open board prices were without material alteration. Now York Central sold at 98%, Erie 63% a 6434, Reading 109%, Michigan Southern 79%, Cleveland and Pittsburg 84\ a 84, Illinois Central 11834, - Northwestern 3014 a §{—preferrod 6034, Canton 60, Cum- berland 46% a %, Quicksilver 513, a %, Mariposa pre- forred 2435 a 14, Afterwards the speculative feeling ‘was in the ascendant, and the market closed strong, the Quotations at half-past five being as under:~New York Central 994% a %, Rrie 653 a 4, Hudson River 110% bid, Reading 109% a 1104, Michigan Southern 79% a 80, Cleveland and Pittsburg 8434 a 34, Rock Island 93a 3%, Northwestern 30% a 31—preferred 605; a 61, Fort Wayne 97% 298%, Canton 59 bid, Cumborland 4634, Quicksilver 52, Western Union Telegraph 6044 a 5. ‘The supply of money available for employment on the Stock Exchange is increasitig, and loons have been made freely at six per cent, with exceptions at five. Some of tho banks are encumbered with national bank currency, And this they have been willing to loan at the lower rate on railway collaterals, The demand from the stock brokers is, as yet, rather light, but on the increase, owing to the angmenting volume of business. The discount tino 13 fuirly active, and first class commercial Paper is quoted at 6 a7 per cent and 8 a 9 for the second grade, The disbursoments of the Sub-Treasury are still going forward, and the balance in tho hands of the Sub- Treasurer has decreased to $83,401,612. Pettoloum and mining stocks were generally steady. At tho first board Bennehoff Run Oil closed 15. higher than at the same timo yesterday, Atlantic and Pacific 5c., Rocky Mountain 10c., Excelsior Copper 6c. United States was 20c. lower. At the second board United States closed 30c, lower than at the first board, selling at $4 60. Consolidated Gregory Gold was 6c. higher, selling at $10 65. Bennehoff Run Oil sold at $4 25, Bennohof Run Petroleum $12 30, Rynd Farm 2ic., Atlantic and Pacific $4 90, Gunnell Gold 83c., Holman Gold, 36c., Smith & Parmelee $9 15. Tho financial gloom and distrust prevailing abroad have inspired some persons on this side of the Atlantic with a vague fecting of dread and insecurity which is entirely unwarranted. Because a severe revulsion has been experienced in Europe they fear that a similar revulsion may be felt here, and therefore assume an attitude of preparation for the worst. Bat there is less danger of a financial revuision in this country now than there ever was before, for the simple reason that we are on a paper money basis without making any attempt to materially contract the currency, which is still being swelled by the national bank issues. Our money mar- ket is practically beyond the influeneo of transatlantic monetary affairs, and had it not been for the injudicious salea of gold by the Treasury {t would have been in nowise disturbed by the recent panic in England, although the latter was almost unprecedented in se’ ity. Had we been, however, on a specie basis, all the banks tm the country would have had to suspend payment, and heroin lies the difference between our normal and present position, which is as secure as it possibly could be from foreign influences. The public debt statement for the month of May has {ust beon published, and shows the following changes:— Increase in debt bearing coin interest........ $0,132,350 Increase in debt on which interest has ceased. 4, Decrease in debt bearing interest in currency, 41,001, a8 Decrease in debt bearing no interest. Total decrease in debt... ‘The legal tender notes | .ve decreased $1! it must be remembered that these have since been rap- idly paid out, The amount in the Treasury on Juno 1 is stated to have been $129,601,082; but the balance in the Sub-Treasury here this evening is leas than eighty-three and ahalf millions, and it is fair to assume that a pro- portionate decrease has taken place in the Sub-Treasuries elsewhere. It will be perceived that the amount of coin in the Treasury had decreased $25,996,450 aa compared with the returns of the preceding month, while the amount of currency had increased $17,700,504. The totals of the last two statements stand thus:— May 1. June 1.
