Bite ie 8 PATERSON RACES. THE DERBY DAY. Immense Turnout of Pleasure Seekers. MERRILL THE WINNER OF THE DERBY, OTHER RACES. SCENES, INCIDENTS, hee ee ake. The regular spring meeting of the Passaic Agricultural Society commenced yesterday, under very favorable auspices, notw thatanding the lowering state of the almos- phere, which threateved ‘rain at any moment. Throe capial races were rug, the most important one beng the Jersey Derby, a race for three-year olds, carrying 100 Ibs., one mile and a half, There were forty-five cutries for this race, nine of which came to the post, ‘Tue attendance was very large, but nothing like what it would have been had the day been fine; yet the ladies - could mot be restrauned, and were out aumabere, | dveused in their gayest atte, THE FIRST RACE. This was for a premium of $250 for all ages, mile "heata, and there came to the post Messrs, Travers & Oegeod’s bib. Arcola, by Lexington, dam Topaz, who was the favorite at two to one against the fleld; Bowie & Hall's g. ¢, Richmond, by Two Bitts, dam Faith, the sinnor of last year’s Derby; Dr, Weldon’s b. ¢, Knight- hood, by imp, Knight of st George, <2 Kiros a fine, compact looking race horse; Sandford’s en.’f. Earring, by Ringgold, dam Emma Wright, The I sales on the result were very large, Arcola bringing Ban, Earring $85, Richmond $80 and Knighthood $86. favorite looked in the finest ible oan and only doubt of bis winning in bis being a very rade strider, and it was thought that this might possibly be more unfavorable to him than to some of the others, ov acount of the very heavy state of the track. He wen the first heat by a head, and was beaten the erher two cleverly by Richmond, whose style of running sem peculiarly adapted fora race in the mud. After the second heat Richmond sold for $550, while Arcola brought but $160 and Knighthood $35, Earring bemg distanced in the first heat. on a8 & Whole this was a mo=t capital race, Firet Hea!.—Knighthood won the inside, Earring the second place, Arcola third, aud Richmond outside. They had a very good start, Arcola soon rushing to the front closely followed by Richmond, Knighthood well up, Ear. ring fourth. They went In this way around the turn ‘tail and head,” passing the quarter pole In twenty- red at seconds, and then down the backstretch without slightest change of position until near the half-mile when Arcola showed daylight between him and mond, and passed that point two lengths in front of toe gray c’lt in fifty-five and a balf seconds, the other swo a leneth apart behind. Going around the lower turn @id Abe, on Richmond, took a pull on his charge and olored the daylight deiore Arcola had reached the tbree- quarter pole, and taking the inside of the track, the heaviest part of it, made a gallant dash for the lead, and beiore he reached the drawga’e was on Arcola’s withers, The finest jockeyehip on the part of Littlefleld landed Arcoja under the string a winner by a short head, mond five lengths in front of Knighthood, and the fly distanced. ‘Time 1:61 34. Seoond Heat.—So confident wore the backers of Arcola, ‘now of his abilivy to win, that one hundred to forty was dered, with no one to take it, Richmond got .the best @ tho start, Knighthood second, but before they got around the turn Arcola was on the lead. He the quarter pole Lalf a lei ahead of R.chmond, who was two lengths in frout of Knighthood, in twenty- seven and ‘® quarter econds; but as soon as they got into straight work the grey yoked bim and they ran and side to tear the half-mile pole, when Arcola began to fall back, fend the grey pasa the pest one length anda half in front in fifty-four seoonds. On the lower tura Richmond pened the gap and came up the homostretch a winner + three jengtha, jo 1:523. Kny pihood was three behind Arcola, The result of this heat took the on ors of Arcola by surprise, and oer wore vory ac- Uve, during the time between em csr’ fond their ‘money, laying, in some instances, one hi to thirty eu Richmond,’ The grey, however, did ar) scrape out to suit his trainer, and this being apparent to the epecu- latory, they ceared offering heavy odds on the gray and Patiently awaited the issue, Tint Ha, wrerige irae gota fine send off and went und tue turn a céuple of lengths ahead of Richmond, who was two lengths in front of Arcola. Richmond, however, was within a length of Knighthood at the warter pole, in twenty-nine seconds, and, passing him en the backstretch, led past the half-mile pole half a \gth, in fifty-six’ ceconds, with Arcola three lengths behind, evidently laboring severely and palpably beaten, Richinond finished the heat two lengths im front of Kn ,thood, who wae three lengths ahead of Arcola Vane, 1:55. The following is a summary ;-— Bowlo & Hall entered g. c, Rehmond, by Two Bitts, dam Faith, four years old. J. As soon as the result of the above race was indicated ‘on the judges’ board the bugle sounded to horse for THE DERBY. The ‘Derby Day” in this country has not, of course, atiaine? the tmportance and significance which has been reached in England on that great ‘ national holiday; Dut still, to an observer of ordinary foresight, it will Sppear that this annual race at Paterson is likely to come to the argest magnitude of any race for three-year-olds in this country, It may in time equal in dimensions and exeitowent the g eat festival on the Surrey Downs, im the tig st Little isiand from which our ancestors mainly fame, aud brought the love of horse racing and field rte along with them. Everybody knows that the English race was named after the head of the great house of Stanley, adescendant of him to whom Marmion , at Floddeu Field, shouted ‘Ov! Stan'ey, on!” but every Body does uot know how it came to be called aftor the id horse-racing and cock-fignting Earl, whose black and brown reds are celebrated all over the world for their desperate fignting qualities, and have given as much Botoriety, noi to say iame, to the proprietors of Knows- Jey Hall, as the mart.al prowess of their valiant ancestors. Near the village of Zpsom, on the Surrey Downs, there are @ number of those beautiful country seats, which form gue a pleasant feature in the fur famed landscapes of England. One of them ix called the “Durdang,"” and Gucther “The Onka”” ‘This lative wus once the site of an alo house. It stands on Banstead Downs. General Burgo after hix return to land from this baton ‘was track with the beanty of spot, and pu the ale house, erected a fine hunting sont tr te a Earl of Derby, who greatly enlarged the a ibe oc sion ine aris mariage 1 Min Foot, tt actress, for wi ni me eomgeend a sive eal evtertainment called “Tho 2 the Oaks.” In The first Dorby in England was won by Diomed, 3780, . horse afierwards imported inte this country, and our best tines of blood, such ax tuat of Boston, en an Timoleon and Sir Archy, and Eclipre, through Durec, have come. The first Jersey Derby wan won by Norfolk, ‘a horse very much inbred to Sir Archy and to Diomd) And this winner of our first Derby aud descond- ant of the winner of the first English Derby ie held by many excellent judges to have been, on the whole, Dest race horse that ever was bred and trained woat of the Atiantic Ocean. The second year of the Jersey Derby did not furnish a great race. Asa whole the three year olds of last season were a much inferior lot to those of Norfolk’s year, and the year before In the last named year we had rainniny this neighborhood such colts and flies as Captain Moore, Lodi, Lissie W., Fieotwing, &c. In the year following’ there were Nor- folk, Kentue ky, Asteroid, Tipperary, &e. Last year whe Dest that ran here was probably Baltimore. Maiden was the voxt best, and Julius we hold ‘o have beom a betier colt than Richmond, who, nevertheless, had the Inck to ‘win the Derby, This year it i# believed that the three Jar olde are a very superior lot, and we are inclined to he opinion that the best of them is Lancaster, own Brother to Lightning, Thonder and Loadstone, * Tt is — possible that 3 1 his trainers deomed pat looking at tie D forma , a w ll an sp ed which have distinguished. h “chickens of the old blue hen," wo are much tuelined to the opinion that he may be, If not the best colt of the year, ax good The colw and filles that came to the post yesterday were good ones, nine eniy of tho forty-dve entries (oF the Derby having the boldness te contend on such a dan- gorona track, the owners of the others from prudential motives keoping thom in the stable, Of those that w@arted Mr. Alovander hed two, Mr. Hanter one, ir, Bush one, Mr. Reed one, Mr. Waisen.one, Dr, Weldon one, Mr. Sauiord ane, aod Rowie & Hall one, and the race was won by theoh. a Merril, by Lexington, a descendant ef Diomed, the winner of the ire English Derby.
