FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Toxspay, June 5—6 P. M. Gold experienced a further sharp upward tarn to-day, the price having risen steadily from 1437% at the opening of businesso 146%, after which it reiapsed to 145%. It then recovered to 146% and finally closed at 146%. Foreign exchange was at the same time very firm and active on the basis of 109% a 110 for bankers’ bills om England at sixty days, and 11134 a %¢ at short sight. ‘On the Stock Exchange the raiiway speculation showed increased strength and prices advanced with two or throo exceptions, Erie was largely dealt in and well supported, while the stock was in such active borrowing demand that 1 per cent was in many instances paid tor the loan of it, Reading and Fort Wayne were strong, but Michigan Southern was barely steady, not- withstanding its largely increased earnings, as compared with those of west year, The whole market, however, appears ta bo rising, and the strongest argument in favor of a tise is that based upon the advance in gold, which has lowered the specie value of every stock on the list, and in order to adjust prices upon their former basis with gold at 190, a rise of 4a 10 per cent is necessary inall the leading railway shares. It will moreovor be surprising if, with the provailing monetary ease, something approaching to this does not take place. At the early session of the open board the market was firMhot duil, Erie, after selling at the Fifth Avwnue Hotel Ime oyening as higaas 6534, was dealt :in at Of 4. NowW-york Central sold at 985, Reading 109%, Michigan Souttnen 3934, Rork Island 93, Cleveland and Pittsburg 8544 34, Northweutern 23% a %—preferred 59 a 36, Canton 5974, Cumberland 47, Mariposa preferred 243. At tho first regular board \he market was steady. Now York Central closed 3 high’y than at the half-past two board yesterday, Erie 1%, Rigx Island 4, North- ‘western preferred 3, Fort Wayne X, Cumberland 1X9 Reading was 3 lower, Cleveland and Vittsburg 34, Mis- Souri State sixes 44. Government secudties were with- out change. At the onoo’clock sessions the market wij quiet but firm, At the alf-past two board it was somewhat irregu: lar, Now York Central closed 34 higher than at the first regular board, Rock Island 4, Northwestern 1—preferres 14, Ohio and Missisaippl cortifientes 34, Erie showed a decline of 134, Michigan Southern 34, Illinois Central %, Hovland and Pittsburg %, Fort Wayne , Cumberlind 34, Western Union Telegraph 1. Government secrrities were dull but steady, excepting coupon five tweaties of 1862, which declined 3. At the half-past three open. board prices were without material alteration, New York Central cold at 987, Erie 63% a 6434, Reading 1094, Michigan Southern 79%, Cleveland and Pittsburg 84% a 84, Illinois Contral 118%, . Northwestern 3034 a §;—preferred 6034, Canton 60, Cum- berland 46% a 3{, Quicksilver 513; a 54, Mariposa pre- forred 2414 a 4. Afterwards the speculative fooling ‘was in the ascendant, and the market closed strong, the quotations at prc five bemg as under:—New York Central 995 a 4, Rrie 6534 a, Hudson River a bid, Reading 100% @ 110%, Michigan Southern 79% 80, Cleveland and Pittsburg 843g a 34, Rock Island oe a 36, Northwestern 30% a 31—preferred 6054 a 61, Fort Wayne 97% 29834, Canton 59 bid, Cumborland 46%, Quicksilver 52, Western Union Telegraph 6014 a %. The supply of money available for employment on the Stock Exchange is increasinig, and loons have been made freely av six per cent, with exceptions at five. Some of the banks are oncumbered with national bank currency, and this they have been willing to loan at the lower rate ‘on railway collaterals, The demand from the stock brokers is, as yet, rather light, but on the increase, owing to the angmenting volume of business, The discount lino 1 fairly active, and first olass commercial Paper is quoted at 6 a 7 por cent and 8 a9 for the second grade. The disbursoments of the Sub-Treasury are still going forward, and the balance in tho hands of the Sub- ‘Treasurer has decreased to $83,401,612. Petroleum and mining stocks were generally steady. At the first board Bennehoff Run Oil closed 150, higher than at the same time yesterday, Atlantic and Pacific 5c., Rocky Mountain 10c., Excelsior Copper 5c. United States was 20c. lower. At the second board United States closed 30c. lower than at the first board, selling at $4 60. Consolidated Gregory Gold was 16c. higher, selling at $10 65. Bennehoff Run Oil sold at $4 25, Bennchof Run Petroleum $12 30, Rynd Farm 2lc., Atlantic and Pacific $4 90, Gunnell Gold 83c., Holman Gold, 36c., Smith & Parmelee $9 15. Tho financial gloom and distrust prevailing abroad have inspired some persons on this side of the Atlantic with a vague feeling of dread and insecurity which is entirely unwarranted. Because a severe revulsion has been experienced in Europe they fear that a similar revulsion may be felt here, and therefore assume an attitude of preparation for the worst. But there is less danger of a financial revuision in this country now than there ever was before, for the simple reason that we are on @ paper money basis without making any attempt to materially contract the currency, which is still being ‘swelled by the national bank issues. Our money mar- ket is practically beyond the influenee of transatlantic monetary affairs, and had it not been for the injudicious sales of gold by the Treasury {t would have been in nowise disturbed by the recent panic in England, although the latter was almost unprecedented in sever- ity. Had we been, however, on a specie basis, all the banks im the country would have had to suspend payment, and herein lies the difference between our normal and present position, which is as secure as it possibly could be from foreign influences. Tho public debt statement for the month of May has Just been published, and shows the following changes:— Increase in debt bearing coin interest........ $9, 752,350 Increase in debt on which interest has ceased. Decrease in debt bearing interest in currency. 41,091, ane Decrease in debt bearing no interest. . 361,152 Total decrease in debt. . . ‘27 ,697,; ‘The legal tendor notes have decreased $18,036,000; but ft must bo remembered that these have since been rap- idly paid out. The amount in the Treasury on Juno 1 is stated to have been $129,601,082; but the balance in the Sub-Treasury hero this evoning is less than eighty-three ‘and ahalf millions, and {t is fairto assume that a pro- portionate decrease has taken place in the Sub-Treasories elsowhere, It will be perceived that the amount of coin inthe Treasury had decreased $25,996,450 aa compared with the returns of the preceding month, while the amount of currency had increased $17,700,504.
