Terrific Dust Tornado. (From the Buenos Ayres Standard, Mreh 25.) On Monday evening, the 19th, our city was visited by ‘the most terride phenomenon ever known in this or perhaps any other country. No pen can attempt to con- vey to those who have not seen it even the faintest idea of this awful storm, which, while it lasted, seemed to indicate that the world was’ at an end and chaos camo again. All that we res or the darkness of before the remembers about sand storms in the East, ot in the time of Pharaoh, fades Even the oldest inhabitants of Buenos Ayres, so accustomed to dust storms, were seized with the utmost terror, never having experienced me on! approaching to it in “horror and intensity. ‘or several hours previous there were indications of a storm all around the zon, aud at ten minutes past five masses of dust clouds passed rapidly overhead, coming from the southwest. Then almost as quick as lightning all was enveloped in total darkness; we cannot find. a word to express the thick, palpable obscurity which hung over and aronud all, Xo one could attempt to move or even sevk shelter, but all stood rooted to the ground. People in the streets had to remain there, most of the doors being shut; and the wind was go dreadful that the strongest brick edifices quaked and shook, as if seats to topple over and bury all their inmates in the Mit boing dinner hour the ,hotels. were crowded, and 10 the confusion no candles could be got; neither could the gas bo lighted, as it was vefore the hour for turning it Meantime the zinc roofs, glass, &c., were blown about-imall directions, “At the Hotel de Paria when the gingn root foll An st was thought the house was falling, ee rushed abvut mudi. i vale a i iy; some Jumped from At twenty-two ‘ainstes, ast five o'clock daylight be- Biv to glimmer through the murky canopy of dust, and five ro ae we couid see ourselves distinctly. tho rain poured down in torrents, absorbing the and ranning throughthe streets In streams of inky blackness. ‘The Tribuna states that a young man committed sul- cide from fright during the storm. In the suburbs numerous casualties ure mentioned, as also in port. Tho Northern Railway suffered much. Palermo plat- form blown away and two men killed. Belgrano station carried away and the electric wires broken. The Western Railway tas had the stations of Moron aa iid unrooted; also a shed in the Plaza Once, were in the Merlo station when the roof j Pe lars were carried away; but, happily, all escaped unburt. The turret of Moreno church is blown ‘Gown. The loss in the river is very severe, Asmall boat in the roads upset, and it is feared all bands drowned. The captain of an American bark » threw out a buoy, but ail to no purpose. The schooner Carlotta capsized in the roads, Several ‘voasels have gone \o her relief. A lighter, with wool bales, was capsized m the canal. A pilot boat in the harbor’ was aiso blown over; cap- tain and three sailors drowned. ‘Another pilot boat of Scilor Hoevel also supposed to * be lost; no trace of hi The boat of a Spanish vessel, with pilot and three sail- ora, capsized in tle roads lost but one man, picked up as an pny outnide that such a storm was never before res. The dust cloud ud had an angular to seventy degrets, and its force was ” Deing equal to the strongest hurricane, LF aes Teport gives a list of sixty ep | roofs and walis blown down in the city; but the of the storm ‘was spent on the outskirts, ‘and we hear of damage. In one place some shingles ‘were carried a distance o/ three buudred yartls, one pen- ~ @rating a thatch roof and another cutting open a horse's forehead as though with a knife. Some carts were thrown into a ditch, and in one case a bullock cart was uspended in the Atriend of carried off his barca ay fo Tey a auto of twenty yards, and thon lightly deposited on terra 5 Telegraphic Market Reports.
