NEW JERSEY POLITICS. Great Exeitement Over the Senatorial Contest. . Mr. Scovel Still Holds Out Against an Election. SKETCHES OF THE PRINCIPAL CANDIDATES. &e kee ko Our Trenton Corres cudence, ‘Tussrox, April 2, 1866, NO BLECTION OP SENATOR, ‘The question of reallirming the election of Mr. Stock- ton, or tlre selection of some one to succeed him iu ube Senate of the Congress of the United States, being still ‘a subject" inviting general public attention, the lobby and galleries of this chambor wore particularly well marked with spediators, some of whom were Indies, ‘On the reconvening of tho Sonato at cight o’sluck to- night a little over one hour was consumed in transacting . Ordinary biisiness, when an adjournment took place till ‘to-morrow morning. One little incident ocourred during the procecdings which was particulariy relished by those interasted inthe Senatorial contest. Ono mouber, in urging tho passage of o bill, remarked that he did this because the Legisla- ture might adjourn sine die in forty-eight hours; where- apon the Presideut of the Senate, Mr. Scovel, remarked that he need not think an adjournment would take place so 800n, This romark was set down somewhat as an in- dication that Mr, Ecovel was still sound in hig conserva- tive posttion, and that hence the election of a United States Senator this term was still in grave doubt, CANVASSING THE SENATORIAL QUESTION. Indeed, the Senatorial question—of which there has Deen and ts still being so much talk and no littlo excite- mont among tho poliiicions of New Jersey, Pounsylva- aia and Washington—is becoming a very complicated ailair; not only grave national interests are concerned, «but itaportant State inierests are involved, It ts being reduced toa position a) to whother Ponusylvania sual rule ie subject or not—whether New Jorsey has money enough to elect a r of her own free choice.
