2 FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Moxpay, April 2-6 P.M. The stock market has expericuced a decided recovery to-day from the depression which marked 1t at the close of last week, and the efforts of the bears to force adecline fare at present likely to result only in loss to themselves, Michigan Southern, Rock Island and Cleveland and Pitta- ‘Durg were the strongest and most active of the railway shares. The sudden rise of the first mentioned to 865, took the street by surprise, and created some consterna- tion among the “shorts,”’ one of the most prominent of whom, it was reported, theroupon made an offer to settle his contracts at the current price, At the open board, at ten o’clook, Erie (sales 4,00 shares) sold at 7234 a 34, New York Central (sales 1,000) 903, Hudson River 107% #108, Reading 983, Michigan Southern (sales 2,500) 83}4, Cleveland and Pitisburg (sales 4,600) 7634, Rock Island 113 a 112%, Northwestern 256%, proferred 58%, Fort Wayne 88, Quicksilver 403. At the first regular ‘board. the market was firmer. Rock, Island closed 2 higher than at the balf- peat two board om Saturday; Michigan Southern (eales’ 1,200) 34, Hudson River 34. New York Central was % lower, Erie (sales 2,050) 1%, Reading \, Fort Wayne %, Northwestern 44, preferred 3, Western Union Telegraph 1. Government securities ‘were lower. Coupon Sixes of 1831 showed a decline of 4}, ton-forties %, five-twenties, of the 1962 lasue, 4. Btate stocks were steady, Missouri sixes advanced 34. | At the one o'clock seasion of tho open board there was Increased activity and a sharp rise in Michigan Southern to 85%, the sales aggrogating 7,100 sharea. Afterwards the market was strong, and at the half-past two board prices were im the ascendant. Michigan Southern closed 1X higher than at the first regular board, Cleve- land and Pittsbarg %, Rock Island 13g, New York Cen- tral 3, Erio %, Northwestorn 34, preferred %, Fort Wayne Quicksilver was % lower. Government securities were quiet, Coupon. sixes of 1681 advanced %. Seven-thiriy notes of the second series were 3¢ lower. At the half-past three open board Michigan Southern advanced to 863% and Cleveland and Pittsburg to 79%, but the rest of the hst was steady. Erie sold at 749, Reading 99%, New York Central (b. 3) 91%. Afterwards the market closed steady. At balf-past five Michigan Southern was quoted at 8636 a 5%, Cleveland and Pittsburg 7944 a 34, Rock Island 1145 a %, Novthwestern 2634 a 34, preferred 643, aX, New York Central 9134 a 4, Fort ih ne 88% a 89, Hudson River 109 a 34, Reading 093g a Xf. Erie was ox- coptionally heavy at 73% a 74. The supply of money available for employment on the Exchange continues superabundant among the brokers at five per cent, and only outside lenders exact six, at which rate the transactions are very limited. ‘Tho statement of the associated banks for the week is favorable to continned monetary ease. The deposits hayo increased $2,686,947, and the legal tender notes $2,162,008, which changes are attributable mainly to a drain currency from the West, The loans show an increase of $2,855,581, owing to an extension of the dis- count lime and purchases of government securities by the banks for the sake of putting to use their surplus funds. The circulation has increased $493,128— a curonic feature, as many of the national banks are still constantly paying out the new currency issued to them under the act, The most important change in ths state- ment, however, is a decrease of $2,015,259 In the specie line. This is traceable to withdrawals for the payment of customs duties and sales in the open market, the sup- ply of coin in which has been during the last ten days greatly diminished by hoarding. Mer- chants and others all over the country have felt a disposition to buy at the recent decline, and put the gold Into their strong boxes as a good invest- ment, at least for the time being, In order to show that the decrease in question is not owing to purchases of, government coin certificates it is only necessary to say that the amount of these outstanding has also decreased, the total this afternoon being only $9,022,600, ngainst $12,627,000 on the Ist of March. The account at the Sub-Tyeasury stands thus :— 20’, 100 1,000". ‘Total iesued , ..117,780 2,108,700 8,859,000 48,000,000 Redeemed... ;. 76,380 1,266,600 6,626,000 37,095,000 Outstanding . 41,400 843,100 2,233,000 ~ 5,005,000 ‘The discount line is dull, and first class commercial paper is rated at seven per cent. vhe gold market opened at 12834, but gradually weakened to 127% at half-past two, after which it recov- ered a fraction, and closed firm at 127% a X. There was a noticeable increase in the supply of coin for de- livery, and although loans were made at1-16 per cent in favor of the lender early in the day, nearly all the transactions of the afternoon were “flat''—namely, with- out interest, Fovelgn Exchange was dull but strong, and thore wore few bills offering. Bankers’ bills on England at sixty dayn closed at 1065 a %, three days 108. Bills on Paris at long date were rated at Bf. 25%X0. uGf. S50. short sight 6f, 25c. a Sf. 28%c. Mining and petroleum stocks were hoavy at the first board, but afterwards there was some improvement. ‘The recent fires and bank failures in tho oil region are not without influence upon the course of prices. At the second board Bennehoff Run closed 5c. lower than at the first board on Saturday, selling at $12 45; Puhole Crook 90c., selling at $3 60; Shade River, $1 90, selling at 60c.; Quartz Hill 20c,, welling at $8 60. Kipp & Buell was 400. higher, selling at $2 75; Smith & Parme- Joo Séo., seHing at $10 30. Central sold at $2 45, United S'ates $7 50, Palmer Petroleum $4 05, Atlantic and Pacific $3 75, Benton $2, Consolidated Gregory Gold $20, Gunnell Goldy$1 26, New York Gold 6c, Both the regular and open stock boards resolved to aljourn to-morrow after the one o'clock sessions, out of respect to the memory of the late Mr. John Ward, an old member of the Stock Exchange, who died yesterday. The National Currency Bank has made {ts usual quar- torty dividend of fifteen per cent and added five per cent to surplos account. This fact goes to show how ill those unfortunate banks can bear local taxation, and how rain- cus will be the effect of the recent deolsion of the Su- preme Court upon them. It seems to us that, in tho Janguage of Dr. Johnson, to establish » national bank J« to purchage ‘the potentiality of wealth beyond the dreams of avarice.” The Anance bill as It passed the House was reported in tho Senate to-day by Mr. Fessenden, and will ip all like- Yinood pass without amendment. This cannot be other. wise than reassuring to the entire commercial and bus! ness community, because it defines the future policy of the Treasury within certaim limits.
