Suspected Attempt to Assassinate Maximilian. &e, &e. &e, Our City of Mexico Correspondence. Mex109, Feb. 17, 1868, * The retrenchments in the imperial expenditure sug- gested by Mr. Langlais, the newly arrived financier, do mot by any means accord with the Emperor's views. ‘There is no doubt that he is decidedly averse to any re- @action whatever in his income, for he needs all he can Ret to defray the expenses of the works now going on at ‘Mao palace of Chapultepec and his new chateau at Cuer- mavaca. There are many who think that it would benefit ‘We ecommerce and agriculture of the country far more if ‘Maximilian were to devote hia money towards the com- pletion of the railroad to Vera Cruz, instead of spending 4 opon works which cannot be useful to the public in q@encral. ¥¢is a matter of surprise how Maximilian can allow the ‘present head of his Cabinet to remain in office, consider- ‘tng the articles that have appeared concerning him in ‘the London Times, the unfavorable reports in circulation and the extravagance displayed in his style of livery, ‘when his income is nominally only $6,000 per annum. This man was a poor civil engineer in Belgium, and owes his Present position to the circumstance of having rendered the late King Leopold various services in a confidential capacity. The Minister of Pubhe Works did request the Emperor to appoint a commission to investigate the charges published by the Times, but the matter never went beyond a decree to that effect published in the offi- eial journal of the empire. The sensation produced by the Bagdad affair has some- what abated, but it ts ly mo means Lgpabay Og one Maat the entente cordiale France and United ‘Blales will prove of long duration. Mr. Se gs instead of entering upon the duties of Minister of Financo, as was expected, is anxious to re- turn to France, no na because he moe that all ae efforts are foiled by the government, and especially by Maxim ilian, who does not relish the idea of having state advisers forced upon him by Louis Napoleon. Marshal Bazains is also becoming disgusted. Some of ‘these days be will ask for leave of absence and not re- tern. Frervary 18, 1866. INVESTIGATION BEFORE CORONER / COLLIN—CEN- SURE BY THE JURY OF THE NEW*RAVEN RAIL- ROAD COMVARY. Coroner Collin yesterday held an inqnest at the Twelfth precinct station house on the body of James Maguire, the fireman, who was killed by the explosion of @ boiler of locomotive No, 29, at Harlem bridge, on Friday evening, as reported in yesterday's Henaup. Only four witnesses were.examinod, but the testimeny was not specially important, except that given by Mr. Rounds, ¢t Harlem ing bim with writing and pnblishing a defamatory libel of and concerning Mr. Sothern, the actor, Mr. William Kent, of Paternoster row, was also summoned before the court in his capacity of publisher of the periodical. in which the alleged libel appeared. ‘Tho case excited very great interest,.2nd the court was wide er 4 during the investigation. fj superiniendeut of motive power of the New Haven Kail- r, Sergeant Ballantine and Mr, Montagu Williams | road; Daniel S Olds, the engineer, and Deputy Coroner cted as counsel for Mr, Sothern, the prosecttor; Mr. | Robinson M. M. Rounds, superintendent of motive..power of the road, testified that the engine was put on. in 1858, was built at the Taunten Works, and the boilerappeared of good iron and superior workmanship; he would consider the boiler safe ata pressure of one hundred and fifty pounds; it had been in constant use for seven years, running about one hundred and seventy thousand miles; the road had boilers which have run over four hundred thousand miles; the engineer had beeu in the employ of the company about four y. did not knaw, how- ever, whether he had a certificate as engineer; he was tested by practical men before hired. Daniel 0. Olds, the engine driver, testified thet he left New York at twenty minutes past eight o'clock, and arri- ved at Harlem bridge about ten minutes of nine on Friday evening; had stopped about two minutes when the ex plosion occurred; had one hundred and ten pounds of steam-on at the time, with three solid ganges of water, which, is supposed to fill tho boiler; the fireman: was on the ongine at the time; he (the engineer) had got down to clean the ash pan, and tho first thing he knew afior the explosion he found himself Afteen feet off; be hed no idea o: the cause of explosion; he had been an engineer about two anda half years, and served an apprentice- ship, and had regular papers from Connecticut; he had had charge ofthe engine since Nevember; there were twenty freight cars, which was considered a small train for 80 Jarge an engine; he had often examined the boiler, and * did not consider any part weak. Thomas Robinson, M. D., deposed that he had made an external examination of the deveased, and found bone fractures aud general outward disfiguring; ho presumed there were internal injuries, Some other unimportant testimony was taken, and the case was then submitted to the jury, who, afters short deliberation, rendered the following verdict:— That James Maguire, the deceased, came to his death by injuries resulting from the explosion of the boiler of locomotive No. 28,.of the New York and New Haven Ratiroad, at Harlem bridge, on the evening of the 9th dnst., and, from the evidence, we do mot censure the engineer of said locomotive; but we do censure the New York and New Haven Railroad Company for not employ- ing practical and scientific engineers, as, from the evi- deuce of the superintendent of motive power, they do not employ engineers on certificates of capability. Beeeased was twenty-eight years of age, and a native of the United States, ALrmsz Mors Lianr ox tar Roxsury Tracrpy.— ‘Warden Haynes had quite a protracted conversation with the Dodge or ‘Scratch Gravel” yesterday, concerning the murder of the Joice children, and the warden thinks he ‘was soveral times on the point of confession, and on one occasion said that if it was proved against him he should go to the ecaffold with a bold step. Mr. Haynes, in course of conversation, told Dodge that he knew much concerning his past life, and he admitted that he was in prison in South Carolina in 1860, for shooting with revolver a man who insulted him. The nd | warden also told him that he was satisfied he was connected with the West Soxnaly, murder ard advised him to confess; he said he would think about it. He was unable or unwilling to account for himself in the latter part of May and the first part of June last year; but being advised that it would be neces- sary for him to do so he called for pen and paper, and was yesterday engaged in writing a statement. Since the days, he added, when public opinion put an end to the career of publications like the Satirist and the Age, the English press bad been happily free from calumnies such as those in question, and which, he submitted, comtained a cruel and scandalous bel upon bis chent. Mr, Mark Andrew Chivers was.called. He said, in re- ly to Mr. Montagu Willlama, he was a sub-editor of the Fives, and resided at No. 6 Clement's inn, He produced a letter, dated the 12th of February, addressed to the editor, ‘and signed, “The writer of the article in the Spiritual Magazine;” upon it, in bis (witness’) handwrit- ing, were the name'and address of the sender, written at the time from a memorandum, and that letter appeared in the Times on the following rR Mr. Alfred Head Bailey, of 3 Royal Exchan; Buildings, printer, identified the letter as being the handwriting of Mr. Coleman, the defendant, with which, he said, he was well acquainted. Mir. Fdward Askew hern was called Serjeant Ballantine. He said he was an actor at the Haymarket theatre, and resided at the Cedars, Kensington; he was now permanently settled in this country, and was an Englishman by birth, though at one time residing in the | a United States; he hed read the article in question, had no doubt it applied to him; he was a married m with four young children, and was living on terms of perfect comfort with his wife; there was nota single syllable of truth in the passage connecting him in the article in question with a young actress.
