The “bull? element on the Stock Exchange \s gradu ally gaining strength, and the prospect favora higher prices, The leading operator in Erie bas during the last two days been selling “puts” of the stock to cover the whole of next week, at 81a 83, which shows the direc. tion in which the wind blows, The eccentric movements ‘of this stock have led to the suspension of several weak parties. The money market shows increasing ease, and the sup- ply of capital available for emjloyment on the Stack Ex- change 18 in excess of the demand at soven per cent, with exceptions at six. The discount line reflects by ita sluggishness the prevailing dullness in all departments of trade. The decline of the gold premium has exerted a decidedly adverse effect upon commerctal in- forests, and by making intending buyers defer opera- tions it has induced stagnation where activity would oth orwise have been experienced. The Sub-Treasury so far flooded the market with coin two or three weeks ago that the eftect is still being felt. We are aware that the gov- ernment in its recent sales bad no intention of depressing the premium to its present low point, ‘know- ing that every abrupt decline of this kind can be only temporary, and is attended with peril to the national revenues and the great commercial interests of the country, the prosperity of which is essential to the maintenance of the public credit and our ultimate return to specie payments. But the government, by selling #0 much gold as it did little more than a fortnight ago, converted the whole Gold room intoa bear garden, and since that time the speculators in it have been making fortunes at the ex- pense of the general welfare; for it cannot bo for & moment contended that « sudden depression of the premium, any more than a sudden advance of it, can be anything but injurious, The great evil of a depreciated currency lies 1m ite instadility of value, and every material fluctuation in the price of gold aggravates the danger of such a currency, What the trade and commerce of the country require is a stable at half-past three there was no ma- standard of value, or one as nearly stable as possible. The ‘Treasury, therefore, by causing an unnecessary degree of instability in the value of our Large money, has assumed a grave res baltty, apd, ti = 4 Bop may) alte BP ene fact that an act of ‘Congress Provides fo the diversion of surplus gold revenue to the creation of a sinking fund for the gradual reduction of tie national debt Gold opened with some excitement to sell at 120%;, and, after tonching 130, advanced irreguiarly to 132 for cash, and closed at 1314 «131%, regular. The supply ot coin for delivery is daily becoming perceptibly scarcer, and interest has to be paid for tho loan of it The steamer Hermann took out $140,786 in gold. The export, thus far, this year, has been $5,127,485, or nearly a million more than for the corresponding period last year. Foreign exchange has been dull as usual om the inst day of the week. Both men arrived in town early in the weck, Rooke dividing his attentions between Nat Langham’s and Bob Travers’, at the West End, while Ryall Suereed at his friend Bill Kichardson’s, ‘in the East, Since the last “turn ap’? both had been in ellicient hands to insure clipping condition, Dick Crudgington and Bitl Lang ba img waited on Rooke, who, a: before, trained at the George and Dragon, Aliringham, while Ryall’s paperioes, fat was got off at Buckhurst Hill by Tom West, of Bris- tol, the well-known trainer of Peter Millard and many others. On Thursday morning, before even the proverbial “gray” bad arisen, a motley crowd of swells, book- makers, pugilists and roughs assembled at a West End terminus, where the officials showed by their novoments extreme astonishment ata visitation by se numerous a company. On the point of six the train moved slowly away, and an oft frequented route was passed over, the country round about . being covered by’ a heavy coating of white frost At the atation where the party alighted, not only the station master but officials knew our mission, as also dd tbe host of a solitary husteleie adjacent, and preparations were quickly curried on. The lighting ground selected was the spot ¢% which Marsden and Wormald contested in 1865, and within a mile of the scone of action in the “Jitue go”? between Plantaganet Green aud Tom McKel- vey. At six minutes to eight Rooke pitched his cap inside the rdpes, and, greeted with a cheem quickly fol- lowed, Ryall replying to the challenge within atmipute or ‘As the meu were being dressed an appeal was ade that Rooke bad on two pairs of drawers, but, when the referee explained that a single pair only was allowed, and Brettle declared bis man should not eet: at all if they did not face cach other equally clothed, he quickly divested himsclf of the “uppers,” amidst tho cheers of his partisans. Bill Richardson backed Ryall to wio for twenty-pounds even, and a heap more money was invested at the same price, each man appearing to have uo tack of backers, thougn at first five pounds ten shillngsto four pounds was offered on Rooke, thirty pounds to twenty pounds being wanted, The “vecentric and undefeated’? und a cele- brated negro attended on Rooke, while Ryall was “couched” by a well known Eastond publican aad J. H, an onorgetic and fally cormapetent friend. At twenty minutes past eight both walked to the centre of the ring and shook hands, Ryall looking decidedly older stripped than in his mufu. His flesh, though pure white, was in tine order, and he appeared all over a taller and bigger man than bis adversary ; certainly he is much more fleshy and more heavily made both above and below, bat the proportions are pretty weil bulunced, snd he is a good loking fellow, Rooke, on the contrary, is all bone sinew, without an ounce of superfluous fat on hit. knobs of mnsele stood out on bis arms and behind tué shoulders, und his whole frame, though he tapers off a good deal from the joins, is well knit and suppte enow ugh for aay- thing. It is unnecessary to describe all the open- ings, feints aud counters in this bout, as very little exe- cution was done by either man, though Rooke shot out his left heavily on the throat 1n the earlier portion, and Ryalt was succoasful in getting heavily on the proboscis with acounter stroke. Just as three hours had elapsed, Rooke caught it on the lefteye again, but he invested sharply twice on the neck without return, in five min- utes time, both men received attention from their seconds, and. there were sugestions about a draw, but neithor Rooke nor Brottle would hear of it, At 3h. 14m, both were again in their corners having a rub down, and atter a few seconds they once more faced each other, Brettle calling on his man to havea round and cither win or take @ licking. Rooke led several times, but Ryall continued the gotting back pro- cess, und eventuaily, after three hours and thirty min- utes, and when everybody round the ring, backers and seconds included, was thoroughly tired, the men shook hands, aud, with the consent of their backers, agreed to make a drawn battle of it for the second time. After 60 full a description of the encounter, our re- marks must necessarily be short. It was quito evident that, either from # fall or from repeated visitations to that’ quarter, Rooke’s loft arm, which had for some time hung heavily, was injured; hence his stepping back instead of meeting the blows and returning them. Neither received puaishmoat in any considerable de- gree; and as their excellent condition would have doubt- Tess nubled each to stand up fora very much longer period, the decision to draw the stakes was probably, soemg' that neither bad much the best of ut or was ub all inclined to “go in," the wisest course. Their thor- ough gameness ix undoubtedly proved, and we are in- clined to believe that it is bul “a toss up’ for choice be- tween the pair, After this second attempt to arrive as vonclasions we presume we shall not again see tho samo pair matched, though both have shown thomselves, and oither inay aguin do so, formidable advorsaries to any but the very bes: men of tho day.
