a. FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Moxp:y, Sept. 4—6 P. M. The improvement which the stock market experienced Jato on Saturday was fully maintained this morning, an ‘the volume of business at the first regular board was larger than usual of late, But the market is still unsup- ported by outside influence, The extreme abundance of | Ry. money, however, and the easy terms on which loans can be procured, afford every facility for putting up prices on the part of the professional operators, headed by the speculative director of Broad street. The latter is a large holder of Erie, and the higher the mar. ket gocs the more advantageously he can sell out his stocks. Seeing the inclination to operate for 9 rise which prevails among the “‘curbstone”’ men, he is disposed to assist them till it suits his purpose to do otherwise. At the first board Erie closed 2% higher than at the second board on Saturday, Now York Central 34, Hudson River 44, Reading $, Cleveland and Pittsburg 1, North- western %, Kock Island %, Fort Wayne %, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 1, Cumberland 1, Quicksilver 3. ‘Thore was 3 sale of Ocean Bank stock at 90, and Fourth National Bank at 96. Government securitics were strong ander the influence of the favorable statement of the pub: lic debt and the advance of five-twenties in London to €9 a 093, on the 15th ult, Five-twenties rose to 107%, ‘an advance of %. Tho now iasue improved %, sixes of 1881 %. Ten-forties were unchanged. At the open board the market was moderately active, and prices higher, At the second regular board !t was barely steady. New York Central closed at 34, Erie 134, Reading 3, Rock Island 3, Fort Wayne 3, Cumber- and %. Hudson River was \ lower, Cleveland and Pittsburg 3%, Northwestern 3, Obio and Mississippi 3, Quickstlver 14. Governmont securities were firm. Cou- pon five-twenties of the old issue sold at 10734, ten- forties 9434, ‘At tho open board at half-past threo the market ‘was strong, under tho continued purchases of the Broad strect party, followed by the “small fry” of the streot, who have unbounded confidence in the speculative director of Erie because of his enormous wealth and consequent ability to influence prices, But it must be remembered that the opera- tions of a powerful capitalist or clique are liable to be reversed at any time, and that what he or they may do to-day may be reversed to-morrow or next week. But just now the Erie star isin the ascendant, and Erie burns a bright flame, around which career a multitude of moths, Er‘e closed on the call at 90%, Hudson River 110%, Reading 1073, Michigan Central 1093{, Michigan Southern 6674, Lilinois Central 124%, Cleveland and Pitts. burg 7334, Cleveland and Toledo 10314, Rock Island (8.8) 110, Northwestern 2934, preferred 643¢, Fort Wayne 98, Prairie du Chien 4834, Terre Haute and Alton 39, Cum- dorland 44%, Quicksilver 52%, Mariposa 1255. The petroleum ‘stock market was rather dull and heavy. At the first board Excelsior was 4c. lower than tthe same time on Saturday; United States 10c, At ‘the’second board there was a slight improvement in a portion of the list. Pithole Creek closed at $8 60, ‘Webster (b.10) $1 95, Buchanan Farm 73c., Cherry Run 20c., Excelsior $1 40, Hoydrick Brothers $1 25, First National 26c., Oceanic $1 08, Oil Creek $3 45, United Btates (v.10 } $28 25. Gold opencd rather weak at 143%, at which price a considerable amoznt was sold, but it gradually became stronger and rose to 14444, then receded 34, and clored at the highest point of the day. The supply of cash gold was not abundant, and loans were made at six per cent on the currency me in some inslances at 1-32 com- ‘m ssion. Foreign exchange was dull at the closing rates of last ‘wock. Bankers’ bills at sixty days were quoted at 1094 a 16. ‘The money market showed great ease, the supply of capital being in oxcess of the demand at five per cent for call loaus. The statement of the Associated Banks for tho week reflects this condition of monetary affairs:— ‘The loans show an increase of more than two millions, the deposits of nearly a million and a quarter, the legal tender notes of three millions, and the circulation of half amillion. Tho specie, however, has experienced a fur- ther decrease of more than half a miilion, leaving only $14,443,827 in the banks. The trifling increage of only $436,206 In the national @.bt between the end of July aud the end of Augnst has ‘been the subject of favorable comment in Wall street to- day, It shows that the hitherto great borrower—govern- ment—has been out of the market during that time; but, nevertheless, its disbursements have been going forward activey. ‘thus the amount of currency in the Treasury on the 3st of July was 31,401,774, whereas on tho 31st of August this sum had deon reduced to $42,782,283, a difference of $38,618,491. ae ve per cont temporary loan has increased more dian eleven millions and a half, while the six por cont “smporary loan bas decreased nearly throo millions and Ghaif; and tho old certificates have been taken up 0 much more rapidly than the new have been paid out that there is a decrease under this head of more than twenty-one millions and a half. The one and two years’ five per cent notes have been redvced six millions, and the three ycars’ com- pound interest notes have increased to within a trifle of five millions. The fractional currency shows an increase of more than half a million, and the suspended requisi- tions have Leen reduced more than twelve millions and a@half, Tho “coin in the Treasury’’ has increased more than ten millions, notwithstanding the reported sales of the Treasury from time to timo. On the whole the Trea- sury is in an easier position than there was reason not Jong since to suppose it would be at this time; but the reductions in the army, navy and civil service have been 60 rapid, and the sales of government property, made ‘useless by the termination of the war, have yielded so darge an amount of money, that this change in its condi- ‘tion is easily accounted for, The next, and subse- Quent statements are hardly likely to be so favor- able oa the present one, for the receipts from vessels and other property in the ny have not yet been sufficlent to reduce the current ex. penses of the government to a scale corresponding with its income. Certificates of indebtedness will, therefore, ‘be paid out freely to the creditors of the government, and when their amount becomes inconveniently large, if new sooner, the Secretary of the Treasury may be induced to put forward the funding loan authorized by Congress for embracing these securities, together with intervst bear- tag notes. Our remark on the Treasury statement yesterday geoula have r. ad “The statement, it will be scen, is ia trory ry respect © a surprisingly favorable one’’ instead of “probable one,”’ as printed. Ay igorous effort is now being made to reorganize th Pittsburg, Maysville and Cincinnati Railrocd Company, and to recommence and prosecute the work of rebuild- ing the road as far as McConnelsville, The Atlantic and Great Western Company have taken hold of the matter, and purpose commencing the work the coming winter. ‘The earnings of the Chicago and Northwestern Rail- road during the fourth week im August amounted to $291,176, which shows an increase over the receipts for the same time last ycar of $93,586, or forty-seven por cent. The public debt of Russia amounts to about $1,450,000- 000, one-half of which is non-consolidated, two-thirds of the latter portion being paper money and one-third consisting of Treasury bifls and othor bonds bearing in- terest. The annual revenue of the country is nearly two hundred and thirteen millions of dollars, The total value of the foreign exports at Portland, Me,, during the week ending September 2, was $33,424. All the banks of Boston are now under the national currency act, the last to come in being the old Webster Bank, with its capital of a million and a half of dollars, At Chicago, on the Slst ult., the condition of themoney market, under an active demand, was more stringent than be‘ore. The calls from the rural districts continued unabated, and the country balances were drawn down to nearly nothing. The banks, although pressed from all sides, were discounting very little, and none but favorite ¢.stomers could look for any favor. Tho nominal rates re- mained at ten per cent. American securities in London on the 22d ult. were ih active demand and showed considerable strength. United States five-twenty bonds were dealt in at 68%, 68%, 69, 6934 and 693, leaving off at the latter figure. New York and Erie Railroad shares, ex coupons, were sold at 5334 and 5354, closing firm at 53%{. Illinois shares were steady at 7834 a 78%, and before the clos) were held at 79. Atlantic and Great.
