MEXICO Highly Interesting and Impor- tant Particulars. THE OPPOSITION TO MAXIMILIAN. ITS CHARACTER DEFINED PRORUNCIAMIENTO OF THE BISHOPS, Rew deo ae. By the arrival of tho steamship Havana, Capt. Greene, from Hlawana, late on Sunday evening, we have received Very in¥eresting news frem Mexico, which will be found @etailed in the letter of our Havana correspondent, Our ‘hanks av due to Purser Huertas for continued favors, Our Havana Correspondence. Havana, Feb. 22, 1865, The Now York press in commenting upon the crisis Shsough which the Mexican empire is passing, fall into the serious error of supposing that the opposition to Maximilian takes any lofty political ground, or is actuated by any higher patriotism than an intense hatred of fersiguers and 4 considerable amount of religious fanati- ism, In & lato letter I gave a pretty correct sketch of ‘the state of the country—a state which cannot be much worse. Guerillas swarm all over the southern part, and ‘men of note are abandoning the imperial cause. So ‘much is certain; but that those guerillas are all in arms for the restoration of republicanism, or that those leaders have joined the armed supporters of Juarez, is by no meens so certain, ‘The true nature of the opposition to Maximilian is as I have stated, and I propose to prove it. It is well known, and will be at once admitted, that ‘the clerical party is the antagonist of liberalism, whether represented by Juarez or any other, and is the party that has invited French intervention and aided in estubl'shing Maximilian, ‘They now oppose him, with- out the slightest pretence of favoring the Juarist party or republicanism in any shape, simply because he bas Pofused to lend himeelf to their views. Maximilian has shown himself the friond of reform, and has decided in favorof the measures proposed by Comonfort and de- @reot by Juarez, the principal features of which are religious toleration and sequestration to the State of the tmmeuse property held by the Church, It is too much Praise, therefore, to this church party, to attribute to them any other motives beyond what they themselves confess. They are the enemies, avowed and determined, fall that is understood by the American public to mean progress and reform. Religious toleration is in their es- ‘mation a crime and a stain. They declare they will mot submit to any government which proposes such a mensure—a declaration which atweks Juarez quite as much as Maximilian. Vicario, who has always been a champion of this party, has certainly not thrown his in- fluence and his sword—if they have any weight—into the acale of republicanism. The prociamation attributed to him raises the war ery of “Religion and priviieges, and death to foreigners.” Nor does it contain the slightest indication of any patriotic or republican sentiment. The Yeading churchinen—th» Archbishops of Mexico City and Michoucan, and the Bislopsof Uajaca, Queretaro aad Za- oatecas—have published a very violent protest in reply to Macimilian’s now famous letter of December 27, which shows the animus of the church party plainly enongh. It is addressed to the Emperor, and denounces tm bitter terms the sequestration of ecclesiastical pro- rty and free religious tolerauon, On this latter pomt e bishops say :— “In regard to religious tolerance we see nothing which can make it, we will not say urgent, but not even excusable. Mexico is exclusively a Catholic country, and her.aversion to tolerance has always been de lanes fm the most remarkable manner. When the Constituent Congress of 1856 was discussing article 16 of the project ef 4 constitution which was to establish tolerance, although it was composed of the most renowned parti- bat is called progress and reform; and, not- ing the earnest desire they all had in securing uph of this idea, they had to renounce it, under the irresistible pressure of the national will, expressed as it never was before. Those extolled Iberals were mas: tors of the situation, exercised the power and held all tie oftices of the government; and, notwithstanding thet and the Himitod Mberty possessed 'by the oppostie parcy, es ally that of Che Chureh, they could not withstand the Torrent. There ralued protests from all sides; municipal- ities, eoc'eties, whole neighborhoods; men, women, socie- ty in mace, procested against the art.cle. The very gov- pine ge o: Comonfort, seeing that it was not prudent to oppose the pubiic sentiment so universally declared, took an active part against tolerance, and the article fell to the ground, rejected by an immense majority. Sire, this Speaks’ volumes; and in seven years the charac ter and ‘will of a people ure not changed.” The press of this party has also declared war in the most empliatic manner, the language of some, the C'ro- wista of the capital especially, being so seditious that it may be called treasonable. One article is wortt quoting from to show the true character of this opposition, and the one I select opens with the following flourish of trumpets, which sounds sadly absurd :— “If, as wo are deeply convinced, the Catholic religion is the greatest ligut of the world; if the Gospel is the mould of the wisest earthly legisiation, and if the Mexican nation | professes this religion, exclusively, down to our day, i anno: Le doubted that our Mexico, by reason that she is @atholic, Apostolic and Roman, figures ainong other na Monalities with the most brilliant and most glorious title to which the most enlightened nations cau pretend.” Are other Catholic countries, then, so proud of their Mexican sixter? Butlet us get at once to the pith and marrow of this article:— “For us the Catholic roligion 1s eternal truth, No other can equal, much less surpass, it in worship a worality. The religion of Christ 1s the only one destined to preserve and perfect the human speci s, and since there is therein a truth which is identified with our inner- Most conscience, it is impossible for us to recoucile it with the toleration of any other, unless by sanctioning error and vice. “The Catholic religion is eternal truth. Thon every other ie een more or less disguised, and, consequent- in opposition to our religion; and since it is nov per- Zima to preach what is contrary to it, we cannot aceept toleration, whatever be the authority of the person who groctaime’ it. Tolerance may be imposed on Mexico, she will never consent to it while she retains one Principle of sound morality. ‘fhe Catholic religion is the only one in the world. Thon every other is the embodiment of evil, or the gerra => or the pathway to it, which weighs upon humanity ves more oF loss horrible, as it either pre Soman or retards its actions; therefore, to favor tole snes, or not to combat Xs establishment fu our country, would be the most culpable of treascus we could commit inst our creed, and from which we should reap et rual 0.” Here the writer should have stopped for the sake of Dogic and conwstency. But, as if ashamed of his intole- rano, a8 he ought to be, he completely undoes the forve his argument by an ‘admission that the Catholic church tolerant, and he proves it with admirable clearness, in apite of himself, by the following explanation: — “The Catholic religion is the only compass and surest for the human race across the vast ocean of life; conducting to a.haven the vessels which choose to Tollow her, she dors not sink those who run upon the rocks, aud this is why she is called tolerant.” But even this explanation is uot graciously give will have all other vessels ‘run upon the rocks,"” ai he will not even follow the examplgof his own church, which, by his own admission, does not hinder them from ing thelr OWN Way, much lews attempt to run them mn. Tho above extracts should be enough to prove my as sertion to the satrfaction of the Tost Dia wseed. It only — now to notice the feeling which eevalle io ico against strangerk, Of whatever tng which pervades all classes, and amounts intensified by fear. Of the two great parti hat mt divide society in that country it would be ox ely difficult to say which possexves this feeling in a or degree; for the hostility of the republicans to igners is too well known to be questioned, while the monarchisis bave also given unmistakable signs of « gommunity of sentiment in this respect. The Fate of the Pilot Boat George Steers, No. 6. Mr. Edward Earle, ono of the pilots and owners of this Doat, has just returned from the acene of the disaster. ‘The voasel is a total wreck, the beach having been strewn with parts of the vessel, her furniture, bedding and the clothing of the lost crew. She went on the South breakers off Barnogat on the afternoon of the 12th, in the violent gale and snow storm of that day, which will be long remembered as one of the most violent. Her crew all perishod. ‘The body of John Stokes, one of the apprentices, and of W. H. Wheeler, the cook, came ashore in Old Inlet, being sixteen miles south of the wreck. They were identified by Mr. Earle, and were buried in the cemetery of Tuckerton, N. J,, being laid side by side in the same grave. ‘The boat keeper of the boat, Mr. Dexter, had remained in the city on this, her last cruise, and James McRoberts, of Staten Island, had gone in his stead. ‘The boat was in charge of Oscar Beebe, an apprentice, a universal favorite and a young man of great promise. The following persons compored the crew:—Oscar Beebe, aged 26, of Brooklyn; John Stokes, aged 20, of Tuan eS Geane aetna, Ma slant uince, erly, ; ‘ of Wianti’, who leaves a wifo H. Wheeler, the cook, of Maas six children. , Relief to Drafted Men in Brooklyn. At a meeting of the Common Council last night, a reso- lution was offered by Alderman Hathaway to the effect that the resolution heretofore adopted granting three hundred dollars to indigent men, with families, who may be drafted and held to service, be so construed as to apply to all persons drafted and held to service. ‘A lengthy debate ensued, in which considerable oppo- sition was manifested on account of the expense, Some four thousand men were required of this county, and if the whole were relieved it would take the large amount of $1,200,000, whereas there was now only $300,000 in the treastry which could bé applied to the purpose. The subject of seueving men who had joined draft relief associations was also referred to, and several Aldermen contended that it would be unjust to place them on the same footing with those who neglected or could not join such associations. A number of amendments were offered, to the effect that all men of families be relieved, whether single men supporting their parents, or married men, &c., which were either voted down or withdrawn. Eventually, @ resolution offered as a substitute wy Alderman allave, was adopted by a vote of 17 tol. is to the effect that all cuses that do not come dae the law ag it now stands, and which in the opinion of the ward committees require relief, shall be reported to the Board for such action as may be required, It was stated as a matter of information by the Presi- dent, that the $300 voted by the Supervisors for one year's drafted men, would be paid to all, and that the Money appropriated by the Common Council would be jer in additfon to the amount contemplated by the reso- ution. ‘A petition was received from the military authorities asking that relief from the draft be extended to all per- gons connected with the militia organizations. The sub- ject was referred to the War and Siilitary committee for Teport. City Intelligence.
