FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Monvar, Feb. 27-6 P.M. The stock market was active and buoyant at the first board. The closingjsales, as compared with those of Sat- urday, showed an advance in New York Central of 134; Erie %, Hudson River %, Reading %, Michigan Southern , North Western $, Hock Island %, Cum- borland 3 ;. Fort Wayne declined 34. Government securities were steady. Five-twenties of the old issue sold at 11134, mew 110%, ten-forties 10245, At the open board, at-one o'clock, the market was higher. At the second regular board {t was ac- tive, but irreglar, Erie, New York Central, Northwestern fand Michigan Central were without change. Fort Wayne advanced %; Reading %, Michigan Southern %, Cleveland and __Pitts- burg 4, Rock Island %, Cumberland 3%, Hudson River 4, Ohio and Mississippi certificates 1, An effort is Deing made to “bull” the latter stock, and a report is circulated by those interested in the rise to the effect that parties in England are endeavoring to acquire control of it, as also of Erie, It is argued that as the sixteen mil- lions of Erie stock was worth in London at the last price (thirty-two per cent) only five millions of dollars, and the twenty millions of Ohio and Mississippi certificates only two miilions of dollars, making seven millions in all, that two-thirds of this, giving controlling power over Doth roads, could be purchased for $4,696,606, or leas than a million of pounds sterling. This, it is ob- served, would give to English capital control of a line of road extending from New York to St. Louis; but we may reasonably ask what would bo tho object of such control? ‘Thore is probably no more likelihood of English capital finding its way into Erie and Ohio and Mississippi shares than othor stocks on the list, and we merely give the report ag a street waif. Government securities were firm. Ten-forties advanced oo At the second open board the market wasa fraction lower on a portion of the list, and a fraction higher on Erie, Reading, Michigan Ceniral and Mariposa. ‘The gold market has been activeand firmer than at the close of last week, as will be seen by the quotations: ‘A vaguo belief in the possibility of Sherman’s march being interrupted by a rebel assault has operated against a decline; but, as thero is nothing in reality to put the market up, the “bulls” in the gold room have. had hard work to advance the premium. ‘At the same time gold 1s firmly held by both private and speculative parties, and notwithstanding the decided successes we have achieved the tendency of speculation will be towards higher rates until the termination of the war appears more definitely in view. Opinions differ more widely perhaps than at any period since the com- mencement of the struggle as to the length of its dura- tion, although nearly all are agreed that it must end in @ triumph of the Union, and what chiefly operates against a fall of the still very high premium on gold now is the conviction that the war will last many months longer, during which the expenses of the govern- ment must go on as before, and that meanwhile the national banks will add their volume to the already largely inflated currency. Money continues easy at six per cent, and the state- ment of the associated banks indicates the quiet which prevalis in monetary channels. Tho decline in deposits 4s chiefly owing to the heavy subscriptions to the seven- thirty loan last week, which aggregated throughout the country twenty-seven millions Commorcial paper of the first grade passes at 79 per cent, with a limited supply. Foreign exchange is very dull. Bankers’ sterling, at sixty days, is quoted at 107% a 1083, and at three days, 108% a 109%. ‘The Ninth National Bank subscribed to-day $500,000 to the soven-thirty loan, and A. Lammasenna & Co, $100,000. The total amount of subscriptions since Feb- ruary 1 is $68,000,000, leaving about $120,000,000 unsold. ‘The business at tho Sub-Treasury to-day was as fol- iy! Subscriptions to government loan. NCO... esses ‘The bids for the seven per cent county loans for $2,000,000, soldiers’ bounty fund bonds No. 3, will be opened by the Comptroller to-morrow (Tuesday), at two P. M. This loan is authorized by an ordinance of the Board of Supervisors, and by an act of the Legislature, The principal will be redeemed in annual instalments of $500,000 cach, commencing November 1, 1895. ‘The following figures compare the last weekly state- mont of the New York associated banks with the returns Of the previous week, and with the corresponding week in 1864:— Fob, 18, 1008. For, 25, 1805, 80,365,128 183,534,735 ey 31 20,092,378 2,355, 92 2,739,383 156,150,684 153,948,481 —The deviations from the returns of the previous week aro aa follows:— in deposits. . Mr. McCulloch, who will succeed Mr. Fessenden in the office of Secretary of the Treasury, was born, it is stated, in Kennebunk, Maine, Previous to being called to the Comptrollorship of the National Currency Bureau, he ‘was President of the State Bank of Indiana, which Is the largest monied institution in the West, having a capital of nearly three and a half millions of dollars, and nine Dranches located in different parts of the State, Mr. Freeman Clarke, who will probably succeed Mr. ‘McCulloch as Camptroller of the Currency, 1s a practical A@nancier. “He represents the Twenty-eighth district of this State in the presont Congress, which is now near its close. He is owner and President of the Monroe County Bank at Rochester, which has a capital of $100,000, and acireulation of $85,800. As there is now a war waging Detween the old and the new banking system, it will probably be somewhat difficult for Mr. Clarke to make up his mind which side to take, as long as his own bank @ontinues to operate under the State laws, Stock Exchange.
