= WHOLE NO. 9836. THE DRAFT IN NEW YORK, The Drafting in the Sixteenth Ward. EVERYTHING PROCEEDING QUIETLY. Theological Students and Liquor Dealers Among the Conscripts. The Draft Complete im the Sixth District. The Draft in the Fourth and Seventh Di- tricts to Take Pisce om Monday, &e, &e., oo ‘The draft for the Sixth distries of the State of New ‘York was resumed yesterday morning at the Provost Marsbal’s headquarters, No. 186 Sixth avenue. At nine clock, according to the announcement by Provost Mar- shal Farr on Thursday evening, the progeedings com- mencod by Captain Farr announcing that the draft for the Third sub-district, comprising the Sixteenth ward, was about to commence, and he nominated as In- apectors, Alderman Ryan, William Jay Hasket and ex-Councilman Samuel T. Munson, all of the Sixteenth ‘ward. The usual quiet prevailed in the street opposite the Provost Marshal's office, and the utmost order and de- orum were observed in the room in which the drawing was to be made. Some little curiosity was aroused just ea the draft was about to commence by Barpum’s Indians arriving opposite the Provost Marsbal’s office in two wa- gons, with a band playing “Hail Columbia,” ‘The Star Spangled Banner,” avd other national and patriotic tunes. “Ye noble saulvages” looked ferocious in thelr war paint. ‘The s)ips containing the names of the persons enrolled having beon duly counted, they were placed in the re- ‘volving drum, and the aunouncement was made that @ight thousand and eleve:: names had been placed in the machine, of which one thuusand one hundred and eigbty- one were required to be drawn. At this announcement ‘the anxiety that marged the procsedings of the two pre. ‘vious days was manifosted to know who were about to be wumbered in Uncle Samuel's army. Conspicaous among these ‘‘conscript sons” was roundsman Lewis, of fhe Ninth precinct, who bad been drafted on Wednesday. He was on duty in the room, and wore ‘on the left breast of his coat # mighty bunch of red and ‘blue ribbons, ombiematie of trath and valor, and right proud did the worthy soldier policeman seem to be of his “blushing honors.” ie isa fine, sturdy looking speci- mon of aman, and no doubt will worthily perform the part of a soldier in the event of his being called to take part ‘‘in tho imminent deadly breach,” or in any other dangerous onterprige involved in ‘‘the pomp and circum- ‘stance of glorious war.” * ‘The following are the names that were drawn up to et Chas, 355 6h ave # iintos Thee Fra a ener avery Jee Ander Sao. ivan 1oihet Argus'che Hl Anderson maw 3 Baggott Batten Geo T, 1: Breen do if, reold) ibd duh Blgewiow Anbar B ot arlear Veter, uth tween ICth an Py ots y Kaward, we ih 315 Brown Baten PJ ud est 10th Bane Rooner, A Wrest tot, Hartera, a, sre aT MIR Banter Joumy Sane sth W weh wt udolph, 164 Boyie Wm. 124 tora Patrick, 147 7th av Buckman mime higath aveoue Back GhaxG, 238 W aot’, at Hy. 443 Went 26th at k Geo M, 227 W 16th 9b "i 23det Brigksed Gam’l, 260 W i6th Bird Jas H 243 Ath av Keekman Jno #, $95 W l9tbst ‘Wert 2lat David, :36 West 16th c ‘Crane tom ae th ave pe Wa Coffee Thi 26th 81 Crane Gwen, 37) tye Couche ‘he Sans! m, 180 Stu av Curran Pat, J ay Cinke Jacol Crooks Johi ow €or iltasn, 120 Tth we Crawford Jax Hi, 169 Weat Connelly Joba. $x Went 17th Chars TisoneSt a Wi core Carpenter Cowes ie i 19th fut Suid W 19th at df 18th st Deliour N, 465 W 26th at — ning ete née - ey ger rs er Frost Th: xi ld om, Knickerbooke pig: ane fe! ae Se Bernard, 263 8th het Ikner Jax B. 225 8b een hs Rollin, Wwe I we 180 07 rer —ar Er rand Jobn, 304 W ith at. Mr. Dogherty, however— whose name is suggestive of Hibernian blood—was cha- Tacteristically philosophical at the prospect of coming fights. The merry laugh went round, and Mr. Dogherty himself contributed to the general hilarity. Several other persona, wellknown (p the majority of the spec tators, were converted into warriors, not in the turn ofa handspike, but in a single revolution of Fortune's wheel. Among them was Mr. Peter Welsh, a liquor dealor, doing business at Ne. 3 Ninth avenue. In fact, considerable mirth wes caused by the number of spirit dealers who were drafied. Bot while these spirituous gentlemen were not spared by iwexorable Fate, the spiritual element was prewed into the service in considerable numbers. Quite a squad of young gentlemen belonging to the Theological Sen:t- Bary connected with the Fpiscopal church were among the conscripts, No doubt these parsous in embryo ar- looking forward anxiously for the day when they may be cali@d upon to employ the ‘sword of the spirit” against “principalities and powers” and “spiritual wickedness in bigh places.” But, ere they reach thie desired consum. mation, they will bave to use s more carnal weapon “against fgsh and blood,” unless they happen to bo exempt through any of the methods prescribed by law. It may be advisable for the Theological Seruinary geutie- men, however, not to be too quick in availing themselves Of legal exemptions, ae, by going to the ware, they will bave excellent opportunities of being trained in their Intended calling. Besides, they will bave the occasional satisfaction of giving some poor fellow = cast of their | fature office, and thus help bim towards ‘the other aide of Jordan.’” It may not be unnecessary to state that the drawings | yesterday were of persons residing on the wert side of the elty. The ueval guard from the Thirty-neventh Massachusetts Volunteers was quartered in the upper pert of the build. ing. The police were aiso in attendance; but neither body was called upon to intervene settvely, A patriotic citi ren, Mr. J. B. Frees, who keeps a drug store at No. 179 SIxth avenue, supplied the soldiers gratuitously during the day with root beer, @ healthy and refreshing beve rage.
