Every one is abundantly supplied at six per cent, and lenders who go in quest of borrowers are obliged to be satisfied with five. For money loft with the brokers by customers not over four per cent is allowed. It is understood that the Sub-Treasury balance—which has been reduced nearly nine mil- lions within a week—will shortly undergo still farther depletion, as most of the money for the payment of the army will come out of it. Within a fortaight we understand that the Comptroller of the Currency wil begin to furnish circulating netes to the banks organized under Qhase’s act; And we learn that the Applications for the new currency are so numerous and so large that all the printing presses engaged will be unable to supply the demand hefore New Year. The effect of this new paper isaue will soon begin to be felt, in busi- ness circles. ¥ Gold fell off to-day. Tt opened at 126%, fell early in the afternoon to 125%, and closed at five o'clock P, M. at about 125%. Exchange was al- most unsaleable; first class bankers’ quoted at 138 a 1384; but we heard of very good bills indeed selling at 137%. The news from Charleston is telling on the market. There was a marked recovery in the stock mar- ket to-day. People are beginning to see through the smart fictions which’ have been invented and circulated in reference to the railroad war; operat- ors who were frightened out of their stocks are taking them back, and some of the more shrewd among the short sellers are covering their con- tracts. The speculators who, doubtless for the purest of purposes, have been coming into the street for the past day or two, with long tales of “declining business’ and ‘“‘rainons competition,” were not to be seen to-day; they have proba- biy discovered that, if Wall streetias a good place to make money in, it is also a place where money can be lost. There not mach business in governments or State stocks, and no change in quotations, At the close of the board the market was all strong, and at the one P. The Weatern shares were all in active demand at*4a%per cent higher prices than those of the printed list. Erie, however, which had sold at 105%, against 103% last evening, reacted {a %{ percent. The silly operators who sold this stock short on the reduction of fares are likely to suffer pretty severely. The Pert Wayne stockholders regatd the redudtion of fare merely as an adver- tisement to attract to their road travel which was frightened away from it by the rebel raid, and can- not see why their stock should not sell as high ag Michigan Southern.
