The loans do not appear to in- crease balf as fast as the deposits, ‘The speeic average is swelling again, and will naturally con- tinue to increase, as all the gold held by merchants or ou speculation will now be sent into bank to be, louned upon at par. ‘The stock market to-day fally responded to the promise it held out on Saturday and Friday. Large orders wi received by the brokers for almost every description of security. ‘These orders came from the country as well as the cfty, and the indi- catious were marked that the speculative fever is wgain taking hold of the public at large. So much money was made in stocks last fall and in Vebruary that it is not surprising that people stand ready to buy stocks again, on the yinptom of a revival of speculation. Every one who bought last fall made money, and thus fur very lew operators have lost what they made. fence it is inferred that the next speculative out- burst—which appears to be beginning—will be even wilder and more widespread than any of the precoding ones. At the morning board to-day the most popular stocks were Erie (old) and Pitts- burg, the former of which rose 3, the latter 4, cent, These are the cheapest of the railway stocks which are certain to pay dividends, beiay 20 « 25 per cent lower than New York Cen- wal, Hudson, Toledo, Galena, Michigan Central, 4c. The upward movement in Pittsburg is largely a d by the oversales of the bears. Of 74,000 shares alloat, it is estimated that 40,000 shares have been sold short and are yet to be delivered. Erie preferred was in good demand at an advance of 1%. The advance of the morning in the other shares was 34 in New York Central, 1% in Michi- gan Central, 1° in Southern old, 1 in guaranteed, in iinow Central, 1 in Galena, 1 in Fort Wayne, there was no change in Harlem, Hudson, Toledo or Rock Island. Governments were better; the coupon sixes sold at Y advance, and the registered rose 4. Bonds were very firm, with a small offer- ing; Cleveland aad Pittsburg 4ths, which only bear 6 per cent interest, sold at 84, and that was bid. Quicksilver fell off to 47%, and was dull at the decline. Bucks County rose 14 percent. At the close of the board the market was buoyant. At the one P. M. public board the dealings were lively and excited. The principal advance was in Har- lem, which rose 3 per cent; in Harlem preferred, which rose 244, and in Southern old, which rose %4. Every lot of stock sold to realize profits was ea- gerly taken by parties who look for higher prices, in the afternoon the market was very active and excited. Harlem fell off to 70 and Erie to 83. The Western shares were very strong; Southern old rose to 64%, and Pittsburg was in lively demand at 79. Each decline in a stock seemed to be fol- lowed by fresh orders from outside. At the close ef the call at the board there was a general rush to realize profits on some of the stocks which had advanced the most; but at the close again the de- mand was in excess of the supply. Atthe four P. M. session of the public board the market wae better and there was more disposition to buy. The following were the closing quotations of the day:— US 7.90 notes. 1063, » 10635 Currency corts 99M wo 99% | wad core... 101% a 102 Missouris. 61 _— son oee 18% a x 4 EPO sees. 83% & BBM Erie preferred.101 4 a 101% Gold was feverish to-day. It opened at 15334, rose to 163%, fell without any apparent cause to 149%, sold in the afternoon at 160, 151, 151%, 150% and closed about 15044. There was a bet- ter inquiry for bills in the morning at 167% a 168, which was about equivalent to gold. The Legis- lature having passed Dean's bill, it is now lawful for banks and bankers to lend par on gold, and the difficulty of carrying it, except to weak operators, is thas removed. Business is gradually improving, and the leading bankers rather look for a better market for exchange. Money could not ve easier. Every one offers money at 5 per cent, nd itecan be got in large amounts at 4 on stocks. Dankers do not expect any larger margin than 19 per cent. Large amounts of money have come in from the country tu be used here. Three per cent is about the best rate thet can be got for them, and their owners are looking for investments which shall yield a better income. The deposits ot the Sab-Treasury | at 5 per cent on call’ after ten days will be filled | up this week, and there will be no other way of using money except on the Stock Exchange. Debt certilicates, new issue, are within 4 per cout of par, We are authorized to state that Mr. Chase has no intention whatever of calling for a loan at pre- sent. ‘The Secretary spent Saturday and to-day in inspecting revenue cutters and harbor defences, and has entertained no special financial proposi- tions. To-morrow or next day he will leave for Boston, and will travel thence to the West, return- ing to Washington in the course of a few weeks. He seems to be perfectly satisfied with the pro- gress of financial affairs, To-day the conversions here were $1,287,000, and the deposits, at five per cent, $962,000. The business of the Sub-Treasury was aa fol- lows to-day:— $3,446,375 98 1 9,712,248 07 16,985,290 08 The exchanges at the Bank Clearing House this morning were $62,476,168 46, 7 the balances $2,900,501 06.
