Reason: that these vessels get hurt by the enemy’s batteries. This, certainly, is @ very good reason. Thus far tho young and dashing officers of we flotilla—Lamsgon, Cushiag, Harris and others, and Captain J.C, Lee, of the Smith Briggs, and Lieutenant Rowe, of the West End—have done im- ense and invaluable service with their vessels; but the Adiviral seems to think that gunboats are not made to be battered by the enemy’s guns, but ought tobe put in glass cases to look at. How the orders to withdraw in the {ce of a powerful enemy, who has for ten days been Prevented from crossing the river by the con- centrated fire of the gunboats, will be re- ceived by the young officers may be imagined. Sbame and disappointment, if not mortilication, are but mild expletives im describing the feelings these officers myst endure by such a humility. Imposing Military Procession—The Ex- citement in the City ibject, Ke. ‘The funeral of Lieutenant Colonel Kimball, yesterday, was quite an imposing affair, having been participated in by a large number of most respectable citizens as well as three regiments of our city militia, ‘The romuins lay in state in the Governor's Room during the whole moruing and up to the time of the moving of the procession, Thousands of people again visited the placo to view the doad, and the grief expressed was the most genuine and degp-seated that was ever felt, perhaps, at the loss of a public man of Colonel Kimball’s rank and position jn society. His friends im this city were legion, and their attachment to him was almort of a romamic character. His unbounded generosity and noble-bsartedness as a private citizen, added to nig Ywilliant courage ag a soldier, were qualities that naturally wO@ for him the esteem and good wishes of all with whom he “me in contact.
