1 ¥ CHRISTMAS CHARITIES. airs at Present Progressing in the City. Benevolénce of tho Ladies of tho Metropolis, &o., &e,, &, The approach of Christraas has wrought with it thi, year the usual amount of charitable undertakings that pharacterize this season. Looking over tho special notices 4a tho newspapers, ono observes three-fourths of the space rally devoted to that class of advortisementes taken up with announcements of fairs, donation visits, propara- pions for Cbrietmas dinners for the poor, bonevolent pro- | enkpeg the bevefit of our sick and wouuded soldiers or children, and arrangements for other equally priise- worthy and charitable objects. To pay a visit to all there various piaccs in one day | would be an uadertaking that might well startle a Her, pules, as well as empty the pockets of a Creaus or 6 Rothschild. Fairs aro places that must be approached. ‘with caution, You must go with a purse well stocked prith ‘yellow bits” or their prosent representatives, postal rency. You must go, uot*only abundantly sup- plied with the “dust,” but also with your mind well pre- pared to spend all you take with you, and to consider yourself amply repaid by the smiles and winning arts of tho young ladies generally having charge of the tables. Besides acting like ‘‘a doar duck of a good creaturo”’— Be , translated {nto intelligible English, means sponding touch money as would Luy a comfortable house and }—you are aso expected to-porform an amount of pe rlaniam that will throw into the shade some of the gamest walkers in tho country. Mr, Smith here, dr. mith thor, and Mr. Smith everywhere, is pulied abou’ he room in the gentle yoke of tho fair ones, uuti! he be- pins to fcel decidedly weak in the calves, aud would give Pll he is worth in the world to be once more emanciyated From the dominion of his unconscious tormentors, At! bie time, too, Mr. Smith is smiling like the hap” plest man in creation, and looks the perfect picture contentment and benevolence, When he finally Tet loose, and feels himself once more a free n, breathing the puro atmosphore outside the walls of- 9 fair house, and away from tho dangerous contact 0° rinoline, Mr. Smith makes up his mind that he has beon fomarkably well done for, and hopes that the noxt time ta caught patronizing a fair ho may be as beautitully id as be was on that last particular occasiou, Mr* Bmith will serve as a model specimon cf the verdant young man who pays his rat visit toa fair. It is the old tory of tho spider and the fly:— ‘Will you walk into the parlor? Said the spider to tho fy, You keep buzzing around the wob until you get inex” ‘Welcably entangled in the meshes, and thero you stick pantit there is no further uso of you—in other words, unti! your pockets are emptied. "But if these fairs have their amusing features, they are jalzo productive of a vast amount of eolid, Insting good 4a. By them monoy is obtained for the poor, food mad clothing are supplied to the hungry and naked, oum- forts aro procured for our sick and wounded soldicrs, and Runds aro raised for tho propagation of religion by the ion of now temples of worah\p nnd the establishment new achcols for the meral and fatollectual training of Rhe youthof tho cky. It is a pleasant way of doing , and deservos to be perpotusted and patronized by public. ; Ono of our reporters paid a flying visit {o some of thesa yesterday, snd found the following yamong others» futl operation: — * GNION HOME 6OHOOZ FOR SOLDPIRES’ CHILDREN. ‘Que of the -plancantest fairs at present ia operation $a that at the Home for Svldicrs’ Children, situated stat No. 20 Yast Forty-socond street, ncar Madison venue. Theatrical An adaptation of Scribe's librotio for the opera of Giralda’’ was: revived at Wallack’s theatre last even- ing, under the title of ‘The Invisible Husband.” The. play is well known in London, was firat brought out her at Burton’s,and was afterwards repeated at Wallack’s former establishment. It is rather a three aot farce than a comic drama, and has a plot as meagro as that of moat operas. A peasant girl, married in the dark to aman whose face sho has novor ecen, imagines at first that sho | has married a millor, whom sho detests, and is foally accused of marrying & Lord Chamberlain, whom she bas nevor before met. A Queen and King consort of Spain are mixed up in the {otrigue, and the whole affair is capable of being made very lively, interesting and amus- ing. Wo do not think, however, that tho capabilities of the picco were fairly developed ast evening. Tho cast was oxcelleut, hut the parts—being originally in- baci for cpora—are mere shadows, and cannot bo mado substantial.
