Sheriock, New FINANCIAL AND COMMERCIAL. Tusspay, Dec, 23—6 P. M. Money is fairly easy at 6 per cent on call, and | @ per cent for the best short paper. Certiticates | of indebtedners are about 85 demand notes, 126°4 ) 9127. | Gold and exchange are very dull. The former finctuated all day between 132 a %, closing at | | 13274, _Exchange is auein at 145 a es with | ‘small iransactions. ~ a Neen Stocks were very dn! to-day, and at ihe first | board quotations were generally lower, with the xveption of governments and Toledo. Seven- | thirty Date re rose 4 per cent, and the 6’s of 188) were firmer. Pacific Mail declined 24, Erie 34, | Bric preferred 34, Southern old 24, guaranteed 44 Galena 34, Rock Island 44. On the other hand, | Toledo advanced 4. The market left off very dull. At the call at the public board at one o'clock P.M. ‘ dvulness was still the prevailing feature. Michigan | Central was bid up by operators to 01%; but there | appeared to be no general business. The stock | and bonds of the Terre Haute and Alton road j have been advancing considerably latterly; the incomes sold at 70 to-day—an advance of ten per cent inas many daye—and the preferred stock at 48--an advance of ten per centinaweek. We notice, likewise, an advance of 4 per cent in Dela- ware and Hudson, occasioned, it is said, by the conclusion of large contracts for coal to be deli- vered next season. These sales fix the tolls ata oar or more per ton on the entire deliverits of ‘the Pennsylvania Coal Company, and thus consti- tute another step in the suicidal coal war, in which be companies are sure eventually to go to the | wall. At the second board the market was irregu- Jar; Toledo and Michigan,Central were firm. The rest of the market was rather weak. At the four } P. M. call of the public board the market was very dull indeed, and the tendency of prices was down- | ward. The following were the quotations at five P.M i ee ‘e,reg,’81. = NY €entral gars baer | U8 6's,cou, iL rb), 1087 Fri US 5's\cou'74. 9185 & Erle prefereed. 04s a vt | try 720m... Its main features are, as we have heretofore stated, the bank scheme and | the authorization of new 7.30 loans. So.far as we ean learn, the committee will favor this plan, at all events as an experiment; and the question in the House will be, how many members are willing to @rant the government the means of carrying on the ‘war, and how many are ready to cripple the North by opposing the only financial policy which can succeed? There are in Congress, as in Wall street, individuals interested in apeculations who will en- | desvor to enrich themselves at the expense of the country by endeavoring to obtain new issues of frredeemable paper. But we learn thet these reckless members constitute a small minority, end that, moreover, whatever may be done in the | House, the Senate will not authorize another dol- lar of paper money. Letters go forward to Wash- ington daily from hence, ftom bankers, bank offi- \ cers and others, assuring the department Con- | gress that no new loans can possibly be negé- tated. But this dodge {s becoming pretty Well ‘anderstood. The advice of these parties would be worth more if its authors were net holders of stocks, gold and merchandise which would appre- | ciate in currency value on the authorization of a — new issue ef legal tender notes. The chief argu- ment against a loan, next tothe alleged utter “Smpossibility of negotiating one, @Toan would probably put 7.30 notes to 95 and gold to 120, where: money would keep 7.30 notes at 103 and would put gold to175. This is what these opponents of mew loans call depreciating the price of govern- ments and damaging the public credit. Sound mercantile houses would not at all object to have their credit depreciated and damaged in this w and Congress, we trust, will be 80 advised by Mr. Hooper, Mr. Spalding and Mr. Corning as to make no foolish attempts to kcep government securitics | up to o fictitious par, when by the effort they force the true standard—gold—up to a premium of - 600 75 per cent. The brig Herald, one of the packets of the frmerican West India Company, sailed yesterdny ar San Domingo with a full cargo of merchandise ‘and passengers, The latter go out undér the avapices of the company as settlers onthe com- pany’s lands. Another packet will be put on the Jine the first week in January, Several of the banks are refusing to lend over par on gold. © Thia is a judicious policy, and auould be universally adapted. ‘The business at the Sub-Treasury was as fol- , lows to-day :— The Chemical Bank has dectaroa ® quarterly Bividend of six per cent, free from goverument tax, payable January 2; the Bank of Commerce, in New | nuual dividend of threo and one-half | York, a se cont, free from government tax, payable Sageery 6; the Bank of America @ semi-annual dividend of four per cent, free from goverame at fax, payable January 2; the Tradesnten’s Bank, a demi-annual gividend of three and a half per cent, froe from government tax, payable January 2; the [sien and Rock {sland Railroad, 9 semi-egpnal end of threo per cent. e , Woratigfantionmeds b rs bela wae Saleh ) or 734 for foreign last two weeks compare as follows:— ‘animation in the market, and i series eee za, "uate seein tee erg ye ware SITUATION AS WET NURSE, yoarried womnam, wita fe ae ret, Cohumbia st., Brooklyn.
