Among the recent arrivals hero is the Hon. Aaron Goodrich, Secretary of tho United States Logation at Prusseis. He brings an interesting account of foreign opivion of American affairs. In the little Court of King Leopold, which ia regarded as the ceutre of intelligence ‘and etiquette in Eurooe, the Amorican Secretary of State, Mr. Soward, is highly esteemed for the sagacity and ability be has manifested in the conduct of the State espoudence with the representatives of European Powers, Mig management of afairs, more than avything has inspired respect and confidence abrond, and the opiwiou 18 entertained by the representatives of various Furopean govertments at the Belgian capital that the re" |, Tiemont of Mr. Seward from the Cabinet of Mr, Lincoln | would be the signal for the withdrawal of ail confidence cor in the success of the Unionists in the'present domestic estruggle, and would precipitate foreign intervention and attompted mediation. Mr. Goodrich expresses the opinion that the people of Great Britain and Europe regard the slavery question in ‘the United States as merely a collatoral issue, and of se condary importance. Notwithstanding the agitation of ‘the vogro question there in days pot. they are heartily sick of negro emancipation, and the opinion is almost everywhere openly exprossed that if the eforte of the federal government are allowed to degencrate into simply @ contest in behalf of the negro, instead of for the rasto- jon of the Union and the authority of the government over the seceded States, whatever little sympathy now vats on the par of foreign nations for the federal gov- ernment will be completely destroyed. After adverting to the affairs of the Society, aad eulogtzing the Pilgrim Fathers and their do- ecendants, he said that as the wach from tho barren hills made the rich alluvium of the bottoms, eo the emigr ition trom New Engiand had warmed the rest of the common country, He quoted a remark of John C, Calhoun, to the effoct thas the natives of New England, and the students of Yale College, im Congress, amount- ed to within five of a majority of both houses. New England bad never yet failed in her duty or in her disposition towards the whote country, ( Applause.) In the days of the Revolution she withheld neither men, money nor conciliatory counsel. And now, said he, we are having another war in which New England bears her share. There is no surer sign of it than that wherever there is a battle, thore is mourning in mawy a Now England home. Wherever it may be, North or South in the fleld ot the campaign, East or West in the scene of tho war—wherever death and wounds visit the army of the Union, New Englund fs clothed in mourn: ing. In the ordor of things that is to follow tho war what part is New Engiaud to take? Sumo say—as they think—that she is to have everything ber own way. Others say—as they hope—that New England is to have no sbare at all, but be left tu herself. Her ancient glory and her present fame ure to form her future. 1 have no concern, gentlemen, oither as a New Englander or as a citizen of the Union on that subject. New England wilt have just the share which she had in the Revolution aud in the conciliation which tollowed it, and which she has in the war that now overspreads the country ; and that share wii! be just such as her wisdom and her patriotiem shail entitie ber to—and no more, (Applause. ) Mr. Evarts ther announced the first requir toast :-— The Day We Celebrate—An era in the history of civil and religions liberty; ft commemorates thesacrivees, the virtues and the zeal of our Pilgrim Fathers, and sorvcs to kindle anew our reverence ior their pious patriotism and our at- tachment to free msiitutions. ‘The band performed “Uld Hundred,” many of the audience chiming in with the music. This was a democratic ctty—most decidedly so—as everybody would admit who had taken the trouble to road the re- turns of the recent electi «Lavghter.) The leaders of the rebellion wore also democrats, and in perfect har. mouy with the democratic party o€ the North, aud they edunted on the strong ties o: ‘party here; but, thank God, they wero mistaken.
