8 ct FINANCIAL AND GOMMERCIAL. Fripay, March 1—6 P. M. Money continues in active demand among the brokers, and it was dificult to-day to borrow on call at under 6 per cent, many borrowers being obliged to pay as high as 7. The balance of the 8,000,000 loan, say $1,100,000, paid into the Bub-Treasury to-day. The disbursements were aiso large, amounting to $800,000, and will con- tinue to increase for several days to come. There fe very little doing in paper, owing to the scarcity of first class names, and rates remain as last quoted. The foreign exchanges for to-morrow's steamer | are firmer, without much activity, however. The principal transactions in Dbapkers’ bils to-day were at 105%; @ 106 for sterling and at 5.374 0° 6.35 for francs, but the leading drawers are not selling at under the last named rates. The activity of the last few days was renewed nthe Stock Exchange to-day, but the upward | movenent of prices received a decided check, | Yhe advance has been so rapid that many of the recent buyers are tempted to realize their profits. Several lots of Erie and Minois Central, received by the Canadian, were also thrown on the market, and eontributed to depress prices. The market open- ed heavy, and continued to decline until near the elose of the morning session, when the result of the election in North Carolina being announced, a moderate raily took place. The discouraging tone of the Washington despatches received be- tween the beards, on the subject of the Peace Conference proposition, caused a renewal of the degire to sell, and a further large decline was sub- mitted vo at the second board. The Western rail- road shares gave rise to the principal transactions, and Toledo, in particular, was very active, the gaies of the day reaching over 7,000 shares. State wtocks participated in the decline, but to a more moderate extent. Tenmessees fell off to 77, Missouris to 69%, and Virginias to 79%, Federal stocks were comparatively steady. The Texas indemni‘y 5’s rose at the first board to 92, The new 6 per cents declined in the afternoon to 95 for the registered stock, including interest from to-day; while the coupons were done at 9334, inte- Fest to commence on Ist of July next. The 5’s of 1874 were sold at 8824, but were afterwards offer- ed at 8724. Treasury notes are well maintained at vates that pay from 14 a 8% per cent per annum to the buyer. On comparing to-dagia closing priees with those of yesterday, we notice a decline of | per eent in Pacific Mail; of 114 in New York Central; of 2 in Erie; of 2% in Hudson River; of 4 in Har- Jem common; of 234 in Harlem preferred; of 24% in Reading; 224 in Michigan Central; of 34 in South. ern guaranteed; of 134 in Illinois Central; of 14 in Galena; of 144 in Toledo; of lin Rock Island, and of 2% in Burlington and Quincy. The market was very unsettled after the final adjournment, closing at about the following quota- ‘tdons:—United States 5’s (1874), 8734 a 87%; Indi- ana 6’s, 84 a 85; Virginia 6's, 73 a 7914; Tennes- see 6's, 76% a 77; Missouri 6's, 69 2 69%; Canton, M% als; ape Coal preferred, 724 07%; Pacific Mail, a 87; New York Central, 7874 a 79; Erie, Rie a 3334; Hudson River, 4544 a 45%; do. preferred, 40 a 40%; Read- fing, 4534 a 49%; Michigan Central, 57% a 58; Mi- shigan Southern ne Northern Indiana, 14% a1 33); Panama, 116 a 117; entral, ae 3.8214 Galena and Chicago, 7234 a 7224; Cleveland and Toledo, 36 a 3634; Chi- cago and Rock Island, 60 a 6034; Chicago, Bur- Hngton and Quincy, 7344 a 74; Illinois Central bonds, 7's, 97 a 97%. ‘The day’s transactions at the Sub-Treasury were as follows:— Reoeipts -$1,130,657 01 '59'000 00 822,520 17 9,521,167 52 The “Taunton Tron Works Company have de- @ared a dividend of eight per cent, payable April 1. DRY GOODS TRADE. Tho following is a comparative statement of the im- ports of foreign dry goods at New York for the week and since January 1:—~ Por the week. 1859. 1800. 1861. Entered at the port.$2,626 464, 3,778,034 1,357,202 ‘Thrown on market.. 2,820,032" 8/917,707 2,414,343 Since Jan Entered at the port..21,692,812 25,650,683 17,730,793 Thrown on market,.22,06,107 26,283,024 14,930,446 By the above table it will be seen that the importations the past week show a falling off compared with ths same period in the last two years, ‘The amount thrown upon the market, though not go large as that for the same time in the last two years, exhibits an increase over the pre- ceding weeks of the last month or two, This has been induced, probably, in some degree by the passage through Congress cf the new taritf act, Importers not wishing to rum the risk of paying higher duties hereafter than those now current, have been tempted to throw more upon the market The pew tariff is exceedingly unpopular, and and is denounced by business mon in unmeasured terms. Its provisions are congidered crude and incon- gruous, fome articles are included under cilferont heads, and subjected to different rates of duty. Woollen cloths, blankets, &c., sold by the yard or by the piece, are taxed by the “pound,” as though they were pork or beef, and after fixing a duty by the pound, an additional ad valorem duty is impcsed on the cost of the goods. Why not tax woollen goods by tho gailon, which would be about a8 reasonable taxing them as by the pound?. While French brandies are taxed one dollar por gallon, French wines are placed under unenamerated articies, Ship buileing materials, including oid copper sheeting, are Meavily taxed. So, then, a ebip constructed under the provisions of the bill would be largely increased in its ost. All busioess mon join tu the ardent hope that the Exeoutive sanction may be withheld from the measure, so ill considered and are i's provisicns. 80 far from ‘increasing tue revenues, it will, if adopted, tend to diminish them. The great bar to a general revival of trade is found im our politics] trouhles, whieh three fourths to nine.tenihs of the people of tho United States would forever eettle if politicians would trast them to vote om the subject. If Mr. Linooln’s poli- cy should prove to be one of coercion and vil war, the revival of trade Lecomes hopeless. On the other hand, should it be in favor of conciliation ant de ca and in favor of letting the people vote on and settie the pending troubles,.the country would atmost at @ bound re- sume its former extraordipary progrees and pros- perity. We bave few changes to notice in do- mestic goods. Brown shectings and shirtings are firmly held at #c. for heavy. In lots prices ruled at 83;c, Both brown and bleached were sold pretty freely in the fore part of the week to the Bouth. Priils were steady, with moderate purchases for export, in part for China. ‘Other domestic staple articles have been dealt in during the week to a fair extent, while prices were uncbanged. In foreign goods importers have been more chary of salee, being aispesed to await the final action of the Exe- cuiive in'regerd, to tho. now Tariff act, Should it become a Iaw they of course expect tw advance their prices for most descriptions of goods im market. Nevertheless, under the spur of the Southern trade of the werk, » fair business haa been done Jn silks, plain and fancy drees goods, ribbons, &e. , a8 well as in some descriptions of cloths, The demand from clothiers during the whole season has been light, not be- ing estimated at over one-third of the usual amount of the trade, Two or three auction sales of some importance have been held during the week. One embri 760 packages ‘of cotton goods, which proved satisfactory. A sale of 500 packages of Iinens was held last Wednewday which d:ew & good company and passed off favorably. A sale of straw goods dragged, and the lots sold were at low prices, —————————=_—*_*FF_{¥_[_[_[{EEEE@@===== SHIPPING NEWS. ALMANAO TOR NEW YORK—TuI8 DAY, 33 | woow Rises. + 6 ob] mica warea.
