HUDSON COUNTY COURT OF OYER AND TERMINER. MFT DAY. ‘The case for the prosecution closed on the evening o the fifth day, and the defendant’s cause was opened in an eloquent appeal by Mr. Zabrineki. He said the jury could not render a verdict of guilty unless the State found be- yond the probability of a doubt that the poison had been administered by Abson. The evidence conclusively showed that the death had been produced by strychnine; it may have been given wilfully by Abson, but we a ar eae hear presume that the deceased had taken for purpose of self-destraction or ‘rough her own mioune: or that of her husband o° the doctor. ‘The counsel explained the wretched and un condition of Mrs. Abson previous to her death; also ere waa no proof or reason to believe tbat there waa any illicit acquaintance between the servant Julia and Abgon., Mrs. Ann Steele was the first witness called for tho defence. Sarurpay, Feb. 2—6 P. M. The money market continues unchanged, the amount offering being stiM on the increase. The foreign exchange market for to-day’s steamers closed dull at 106% @ 107 for sterling. The news from England by the Arabia last even- ing caused a panic in the Stock Exchange this morning. The Arabia brought over some orders to sell stocks, partly for cash and partly on sellers’ options; and there being no orders in the market, prices gave way suddenly and heavily. The stocks most affected were Illinois Central, which fell 7 per cent, and Erie, which fell 5; the general rail- road list sympathizing in the decline. State stocks were also lower. Missouris fell 114, Tennessees 1, and the stocks of the other border States in pro- portion. Itis presumed that the stocks of these States which are held abroad will be sent here for sale. United States fives advanced 2 per cent, and Treasury notes were in rather better demand; the notes bearing 104 interest sold at par. After the first board there was a general rally, and better prices ruled all round. This afternoon, however, the reaction was lost again, and still lower prices ruled. All the State stocks, and especially Virginias, Tennessees and Missouris, were offered at @ decline.
