While all branches of busi- pees bave sutlered some, particular departments have been and are afizcted In # much greater degree, The de- pression waich ailects ene largo manufacturing interest, fer wstance, extends through many others whish are close'y dependent upon and aliied with it. 80 thet-when the manufacturers of one claas are obliged to discharge their workmen, those of othor classes often have no alter- ative than to follow eui:. It is imposeible to estimate correctly the namber of work people of both sexes who | have been thrown out of employment in this oity during ‘the last week, or wh» were informed on Saturday evening that thetr-employers had no more work for them. The umber certainly reaches @fteen thousand, and probably far exoceds that number. Many instances bave trepepired of large orders given by the South, previous to the clection, for variou Dranches of manufactures, heviag been countermanded within the last two weeks Among these was one of 96,000 for hats, one of $8,000 for clothing, two amounting to $14,520 for harness, and « single order ‘for $25,000. ‘These avo facis which certainly speak loudly enough. The manufacturers of carriages 12 New York (with but very few-exceptions, which will be noticed below) have | Deen campelled to discharge all, or nearly all, of their workmen ip consequence of the complete cessation of their orders, Some of them have branch cetablishments, | or their principal factories and workshops, in Newark, Now Jersey, aad in Now Haven, tho operatives ia which either reside in New York, of bave their families here. Denman, Mooney & Co, Win Piatt, Sanders & Co, Onbora & Go., Penoyer & Willis , te Union Carriage Company, H. Miller all tea firms, all of this city. There are ether rons who have diecharged bali or one quarter of their respective forces, and are working the remainder. Mr. Wm. L. McHonald, 619 Broadway, one of the largest manufacturers in tho city, had a very busy seasoo until Kovember let, tluce which time his orders from the South fell off rapidly, aod have now eutirely ceased. Mesrs, Emerson, Brewster & Co , 108 Broadway, say ‘that withia the last three weeks their orders from the Sonth have been gradually falling off, and have now en- Urely ceased. With other portions of the Uaioa they are doing the usual business. They have many letters from the South, which, while containing neither orders nor re- mittances, are yet candid and highly honorable tn their | tone, and express warm devotion to the Union, acd carcett determination to remain in it. Meesrs, Warren & Wiison, 27 Murray street, are still receiving some orders from the South, but much fewer than usual€é this time of year, owing to the feeling of upeasiners at the South. Messrs. George & Bro , 17 Murray street, report s slight fa ling off im their Southern trade Messrs. During the month of No vember cf last year they made two handred and thirty. one safes of all kinds; and they are usually busy at this season. Since the recent election, however, their orders from the South bave fallen off to such an extent that they have becn ecmpelied to discharge half of their workmen. For the jast three weeke they have employed the re. maining balf of their force on three quarters time, prio cipally in finiehing op old orders. Another esfo manufactarisg house, of equal celebrity, has been obliged to retrench their force of workmen, in consequence of the falliog of of Southern orders and the position of atfairs at the South. In fact, many of these gentlemen betray @ mawkish pensibility upon the subject of giving Information, and thereby, as they ray, ‘adding fuel to the flames,” that is decidedly amue when one takes into considera tion that they are the only parties at present reaping the Derefit. Several of them regard the agitation as little more than the natural effervescence of the Southern na ture, and express the belief that it will not continue for many weeks longer.
