the profit of the revived acheme of a Southern confederacy. Tax Ficut ror mux Fepsrat Sroms.—The @ource of all the misfortunes of this country, Of all the disturbing agitation and all the rascality of corrupt politicians, is the public plunder. Were there no spoils there would be whig party, Onding that they could not get into office in any other way, got up an anti-slavery fesue, and appealed to the religious fanaticiem Of the North, which, aided by the pulpit, has rendered them successful. They cared not whetber they dissolved the Union or not. They were determined to have the spoils, either in the Union or in the Northern half of it after secession, and as this public plunder is the grand motive cf “the irrepressible conflict” among dhe politicians of the party, the fight among them will be as fierce and terrible as that of a dozen dogs over one bone. ‘There will be at least one hundred candidates for.every pace, and as many capdidates for every job. Already are the dogs of office on the scent of the prey. The following list of Candidates for offices in this city is published:— THE COLLECTORSHIP. NAVAL STOREKEEPER, Jobn P. Cummings, contractor; Danie! E. Gavitt. Such are the candidates already in the field. There wiil be a grand rush for the spoils, and if the Southern men would only have a little patience they would see the republican party broken up in a fight for the plunder in six or eight months after the inaguration of Lincoln. And yet it is for the sake of this that the Union is now brought to the very verge of dissolution by reckless and unprincipled demagogues. Tax Tamvune’s Response To Our Catt cron tne RervsiicaN Mercuants.—The Tribune, re- eponding to our call upon the republican mer- chants of New York to hold a public meeting explanatory of their real sentiments, and their objects and views in voting for Lincoln, under- takes to say on behalf of these gentlemen that such s meeting would have no effect, as the merchants would be suspected of being merely desirous to sell their wares, or to be paid for wares already sold, and the force of their pro- féstations, therefore, would be without effect. In this dilemma the Tridune suggests that “the prominent statesmen and politicians of the late @emocratic and fusion parties” should issue a manifesto vouching for the sound, constitutional views of the republican party, and declaring that “ there is not the slightest reason for sup- posing that it intends to interfere with any of the rights of the States.” If the Tribune is of opinion that the word of the republican mer- chants of New York is unworthy of credit, we have no objection to the leaders of the demo- racy and the fusion parties endorsing them, provided they will first declare their views. But it would be unreasonable to ask any one to say 0 much for them till they eay it first for them- selves, lest they should come out with a denial, and procialin their continued adhesion to the principies of Helper’s book, and to the irre- pressible conflict doctrines of William HL. Seward. The crisis is upon them, and if it continues much longer they will neither be paid for what they bave sold at the Soutb, nor even effect any more gales to the dwellers beyond Mason and Dixon’s fine. Their own interests, the interests of the whole country, are at stake; a commercial panic has commenced, and it is their bounden duty to ‘Come forward and remove the apprehensions of the Southern Stater, if they really do not con- eur in the doctrines of the ultra wing of their Let them take this step, afid they will | be endorsed and applauded by all good men in the community. But, above all, let Mr. Lincoln ome forward before it is too late and make such a declaration of bis views as ought to tran- quilize the excitement at the South and arrest the rapid progress of secession. Let him do @his, and everybody at the North will endorse him. Evanceticat JocnwaLisy—Tue Sams Cavont Boowe.—Not many months ago, as probably ome 0! our readers are aware, an effort was qmade to set agoing in this city a daily news- paper making extraordinary pretensions to ho- Liness. It might have entitled itself to become the organ of the evangelical alliance. No re- cord of human frailties was ever to find a reflex | In this model mirror of the timer; and, above all things, the strict observance of the Sabbath ‘was to be exacted from all its employs. The | pious dodge explodes, however, every now and again. Theatrical advertisements are not how, as they were at first, excluded, and Police Hteme are admitted to » place in We find, moreover, that not only saints becoming more Jax in their ‘but they even furnish those who do not pretend to such highblown sanctity with ludicrous evidences of their own hypocrisy and deceit. We find, for instance, in yesterday's issue of this evangelical sheet, a despatch from Washington, forwarded over the wires on Sunday, but antedated so as to appear to have been sent on Saturday. The | saints, however, must have been more thon usually stupid when they perpetrated this pious | fraud, for they allowed to appear tu we NEW YORK despatch in question s paragraph commencing, “Sermons of o political character have been preached in most of the churches to-day.” Newspaper Pecksniffs ought to take more heed to their ways, or else give up the pious dedge altogether. Neither does it consist with euch professed love for the Sabbath to compel re- porters to do violence to their consciences by reporting sensation sermons. Our evangelical cotemporary may as well throw off the mask at once, and, instead of a reputation for aanctity, try to win one for honesty and common sense, Town Torics—Fasaionance AMvsEMENTS.— Now that the political excitement has ia a mea- sure subsided, and the town has become easy in its mind as to the result of the contest, the fash- ionable world is busy in making arrangements for the gay season, which begins early in No- vember, culminates duriog the Christmas holi- days, and ends with the beginning of Lent. The new Opera season, by what is called the German company, will begin on next Monday, with Halevy’s “Juive,” for which the scene painters, costumers and machinists of the Acade- my bave been preparing during the recess. The only important addition to the company is Madame D’Angri, the contralto. It is purposed to extend this season until Christmas, and to bring out several new operas, Verdi's latest work amoug the number. The Artista’ Asso- ciation—Colson, Brignoli, Muzio and others— have been giving concerts in the Western cities, and now announce that they will commence an operatic season at Philadelphia on next Monday. After the present dynasty has vacated Irving place, the associated artis!s, led by Muzio, the Garibaldi of the coulisses, purpore to attack the metropolis. Their com- pany is a very strong one, and if they continue to be united they can scarcely fail to be victo- rious. As matters stand now, we have a fair chance for Opera throughout the Winter. Baoadway, on these fiae Indian summer days, continues to present the most brilliant aud highly colored pictures of real life, high and low. The Southern element, a very important one in many respects, has vauished from our grand promenade. The excitement in the Carolinas, Georgia and Alabama has caused the speedy return of citizens of those States to their homes. During the spring and summer the fashionable hotels were crowded with Southerners. At one time the parlors of the Fifth Avenue Hotel were filled with belles and beaux from the sunny South. But the sunny South has become some- what cloudy, and, according to the present ap- pearance of things, many of her sons and daughters who have been in the habit of spend- ing a great deal ef time and money in New York will not appear ia Broadway again for several years. Still, we shall have our gay season, with the Opera, the theatres, the artists’ receptions, the balls and parties without num- ber. Panics, revulsions and insurrections may trouble Wall street and upset the stock mar- kets, but they will not arrest the polka nor sus- pend the German. Whatever may happen in the political world, the city of New York will still be the social metropolis of this continent. On that question we are all united.
