In truth, between one way and | another of evading the retribution of hia crime, ‘the murderer has little case to fear, and there- | fore will not be deterred from imbruing his hands in the blood of a fellow citizen when hia passions prompt him to the deed. It was a very hard matter to bring a murderer to justice be- fore. It is only right that the public should Jknow that now it is next to impossible. ‘This law to increase crime by multiplying the criminals’ chances of escape is worthy of the falee humapitarianism and the maudlin senti- mentality of the republican party, whose princi- pal leaders have declared. all progerty to be robbery, and whose sympathies are exclusively Javished onthe black race and on criminals, while they surrender white men to the knife of the assassin. If the tree is known by its fruit, the specimen produced by the republican party while in power in this State shows what they ‘would be likely to doif they were safely in- stalled in the federal government. The difficulty now is with the elect. It is no longer Lazarus, but Dives, who is in danger. Brother Greeley, who likes to have acmall dig at his evangelical friends occasionally, gave the,cue for the difficulty some three weeks ago, in an article calling the attention of the faithful to the fact that, while the churches, generally, held promiscuous dancing to be an abomination, and believed that the leaders of the German were pioneers in the path to perdition, a number of bright and shining lights fn the sanctuary, including several distinguished clergymen, had absolutely per- mitted their names to be used as members of a committee to give a ball to the heir apparent of the British throne. Brother Greeley’s mind ‘was a good deal exercised on this subject, and he asked, with affectionate earnestness, what was to be done? While we have been waiting for an answer to this pertinent inquiry the re- ligious papers have taken the matter up. The New York Observer has a cheerful correspon- dent, who signs himself “A Pastor,” and who is very much troubled about this same subject of saltation. “A Pastor” makes a case, as we think, to open his le‘ter, and trots out that time honored young woman in “great spiritual distress.” She was a professor of religion, and a member in good standing of one of the Pres- | byterian churches in the city of New York. She came to this particular shepherd, after voluntarily excluding herself from the “com- munion of the saints, in consequence of the painful conviction that she had been guilty of a ein against the Lord and his people that could not be easily overlooked.” Now, any one would sup- pose that this young person had committed a murder or some other heinous crime. But | euch was not the case; far worse, she had been — induced by some friends in Brooklyn to go to a Dall and “mingle in the promiscuous dance.” This was her awful offence, and it is good to know that her “pastor” treated the case with due severity. ‘Of course,” he says, “it never once occurred to me to tell her that her offence ‘was trifling.” No, he was not like some people, who would have relieved ber “agonized con- | ecience by reminding her that the dance was a harmless amusement, and her attendance at the ball nothing for which she sbould indulge such | bitter celf reproaches.” The vile young woman — ‘was compelled to do penance outside the | church for awhile, and will never attempt | another polka as long as she lives. All this is | arranged to lead up to anattack upon the | Terpsichorean saints who intend to help in the ball to the Prince of Wales. Here is the pas tor’s peroration:— | And l vow add, that this and other cases of young ‘Christians yielding to the temptations of the dance, in | private or in pao ic, coming to my ara pas. tor, bave given edge to my woitciute apout sonearat band If this bail did Aminidab Sleek biaself could not have sni- welled over a ball with more effect than this canting “ pastor.” It is, indeed, woaderfal that ‘in this enlightened age there should be so much of the old time fanatici«m left in the Christian Church. We verily believe that if some of the Cotton Mathers of the present day could have their wish they would pat ns all under the Con- necticut blue laws, and give the Prince prayers instead of polkas, aod sermons in the place of echottisches. Certainly in this country it has far exceeded the expectations of the world. When Daguer- re first brought the sun's rays into subjection and tamed them to the uses of the daguerreotype, he little supp aod ‘thet these rays of light would ever have been made to work such miracles. The great branch of art which that distinguished man labored so hard and so earnestly to per- fect is now but as @ shadow to the sun in comparison with the extraordinary modern developements of the pholograph; and every American will be proud to know ‘that this country is far in advance of either England or France—two of the great European centres of art—its ap- plication, This must occur to the Prince of Wales, as it bas to everybody else—for a genuine photograph is of far more importance than en oi] painting, for more than one reatou. The latter is ordinarily the copy of another pic- ture, aod in many Instances is liablo to be false or imper- fot, while the former is arefiex of the living and movirg object, and is thus liable to no alteration or misrepre- tentation. Besides, a photograph, when completed in ali dend the elegance and perfection of advanced art, and colored | ‘by a ekilfal baod, can only be recogn'zed as such by con- notseeors. The effect is the seme to the ordinary eye, and there is a considerable pecuniary difference bet ween the ‘ecet of an oll painting and the expense of « photograph. Hevce colored photugrapbs are rapidly making serious \preaas on the profession of the oi! painter. Brad) 's collection must be personally visited to be fully appreciated.
