Let them beware of repeating the error. Money has advanced in value during the week. Capitalists seem to have come to the conclusion that we are going to have a more stringent money market this fall, and are shy of long paper. We _quote for six months paper, with two good names, €$a 7 percent; four months paper, 6 a 64; sixty day paper, 6} a 6—in every case for the highest grades, Single names go at 7 a 8; names not generally known at7a9 212, &c.,&c. The conrse of our money market is a matter of earnest discussion among bankers and capitalists. Those who have money to lend argue that the amounts required for moving the crops must, is the present expanded ‘condition of our banks, lead to an active inquiry for noney before September. On the other hand, borrowers point to the increase of our exports of domestic produce, to the moderate imports of foreign goods, and argue that the foreign exchanges are, steadily, turning in our favor, and that the days of 12 a 18 per cent money markets in New York have passed forever. The reader will decide between these opposing views. We will only remark that, thus far, no money consuming enterprises of any consequence have been introduced to the notice of our capi- taliate. Foreign exchange was Inactive all last week, ‘The qnotations are stereotyped—for bankers’ bills on London, 109% a 110 for sixty day bills, and 110} a for short sight; for bills on Paris, 5.13} a 14} for sixty day bills, and 5.10 for short sight. There are some mercantile bills in market at the usual concession from these prices, but not enongh to check the demand for bullion. Foreign exchange has ruled umsually low this year, and in conse- quence of the active competition among bul- lion brokers, gold has ruled so high that very little money has been made by shippers. Much of this is to be ascribed to the heavy shipments of domestic produce and the comparatively light im- ports of foreign goods, There is, in fact, no reason why the United States, with its enormous sur- plus of cotton, breadstuffs, provisions, tobacco, rice, manufactures, &c., should be perpetually a debtor to Europe, especially as, notwithstanding 5.588.908 Previously reported.79,955,282 151,428,020 141,286,506 | the present protective duties, our manufacturers are every year competing more successfully with those of Europe. compelled to visit Virginia City for a time, a meseenger 1800. ‘The course of the stock market during the past wag sent to me to apprise me of his death, and 1 hasten | For the week.......$1,046.962 1,561,588 2.287.574 | mp @th has been agen to notify his friends.
