Negro Insurrection on a Guano Island. 4 BALTIMORE VESSEL THREATENED—WILD EXCITE- MENT {From the Baltimore American, A\ 10) A serious insurr’ ction of the negroes at vrero Gua- no’ Island has caused no little excitement among the merchants and sea-faring people interested in the guano business, both in Baltimore and Petersburg, Virginia. The excitement attained such a pitch that Capt. Benthall, of the Baltimore bark Warren, and Capt. Burnell, of the er Emma Tuttle, of New Haven, Connecticut, were compelied to interfere and imprison some of the ingurrectionists. The Emma Tuttle arrived at Peters- burg, Virginia, on Monday, with a cargo of guano, and her captain gives the following particulars of the out- break, which we take from the Petersburg Express: — The negroes employed on the island, w! is only three-fourths of a mile long, are all free, and are hired ‘at the rate of $12 a month to dig guano and load the ves- sels that come for it. = number 200. The ‘a white man, had been on the island for a long time, and desiring to visit his home, in New England }had the fortune about two months ago to meet witha Free Mazon, named Snow, who had arrived from New Rogand in the schooner Eastern Star, of which first mate. With him he made a fey ge lace, Snow taking the foremanship of the foreman taking the position of tiret mate of crn Star, Snow was a maa of energy and determination, and being long habituated to the exercise of a ri; command on ehipboard, did not change his discipline on the island. "The negroes, who were princi- ely Peek pe Danish, and were obtaired from the neighboring islands of the West Indies belon, to those watleas, were consequently always hostile cans, on account of the latter’s slavery proclivities, grew dissatisfied with the management of their new superin- tendent and meditated every variety of revenge, Only four of them, however, seemed to have bi designs to a concerted measure, and on the 24th of Ji jal one of them was delegated to murder him, while the be were near to see name effectively done. y were engaged car on this and the chosen murderer being up on the top of it, rs ad- vantage of the foreman as he was stooping on the ground below, and hurled a tremendous lump of guano at his head, crushed bis skull with the blow, and left him for dead on the peor Considerable commotion followed among the whites upon the discovery of t. ..vempted murder, and the Lad who committed the deed was im- mediately arrested by Capt. Barncll, of the Emma Tuttle, and Capi. Benthall, of the bark Warren, of Baltimore, placed in irons and conveyed on board the latter vessel. It was their determination to take him into a United ‘States port for trial. The arrest created the wi'dest cxcitement among the negroes, who rose en masse, and took possession of the island. The white employés, who numbered only twelve, were compelled to submit to the revolt, but were un- harmed, since they remained non-committal, bein; too much intimidated to attempt to suppress the 200 ‘half savage negroce, and ‘at the same time afraid to join with Against the vessel, knowing that pun- iehment was sure to follow from tha United States au- thorities as soon as intelligence should have been con- veyed to the nearest American port. The negroes threatened to | L} yy oa gator por pe not given up, and when Captain Benthall attempted to fate te above from the Warren, they collected er the wharf and stoned him until he was forced to take refuge back upon his bark. Captain Burnell got ashore safely, but was met with savage demonstrations from the jusur- gents, who were armed in their Siam with huge clubs and in their left with heavy bl with difficulty made his w: pelled to surrender all the Euglish money posseasion to appease them peggy he admit of his escape from their murderous clabs. tting safely into the office of the agent, Mr. Elliott, who is owner of a large interest in the island, and is well known in this city, he Vv iy is ty, return- Tharroed to his versal Filiott —_ in the course of a few days fifty Irish bands from Richmond, with as many revolvers and iostruments of government and civilization, through means of which he would be able to subdue the revoiters and effectually prevent any further should it be his good fortune to that time. The superintendent was not dead when the Tuttle left, on the 25th, but was not expected to live. There was no physician on the island, and no treatment he received coald either alleviate his suilerings or insure a hope for his recovery. The had refused all offers or demands to return to work, but holding ion of the island, were hav- ing a fine time with the provisions and privileges of the place, with nobody to dary to say ‘“boo!”” to the first one of them. A brief address, embrac ing a bist sketch of the deceased, was delivered by Rev. Mr. Bellamy.
