We are all right in Belize—fine weather, trade imprey- ing, and with high expectations for the fature. Our acting Superintendent, with his knowledge ef the wants of the commanity, is filing up the various boards which make our working government. These boards are usually composed of seven members; but of late some ef them had had only one member. This bad caused moch dissatisfaction, made things work badly, and was the cause of endless complaints. Our sew Superintendent is expected by the next packet, and we aro indulging in bright amticipations ef a good trade im future. At Ruatan, the news of the late treaty with Guatemala and Honduras was received by the Englieb and foreign- ers with great dissatisfaction. On the other mae we Spanish and Indian laborers, in anticipation of the isiands beimg given upto the State of — were ay hb glee, and soon became very insolent, the result of was an outbreak and « general row. This was animes, and the ringleaders punished, and it was ‘hought everything was settled. Not 8; the Indians and Spaniards were more discontented than ever, and soon planned an attack on the English inhabitants. Their plan was to set fire to some of the windward houses, and thus burn down the town, and as the men came out of their houses to murder them. Their plans were overheard, and the leaders arrested, and subuequemuly tried and convicted. While the trial Was going 00, @ iarge body of men and women assembled at the Court House. Some person in the crowd gota couple of blocks, s coil of rope, and stood ready to hang them up to the trees iu the rear of the court. These facus were communicated to the magistrate, who not only re- fused to pags sentence upon them, but went out and faced the crowd—numbering more than four hunéred— who were clamoring for the ig aggre , and who threatened the magistrate atéempted to interfere with their purposes. ‘This state of excitement and ill-feeling was increased by ® report that had got in circulation that a family had been murdered by a Spaniard on the other side of the island; aod # rush was made for the Court House to bring out the prisoners. m the magistrate threw himself in the door, saying ‘you must first shoot me and then over my body, before you shall have these men.’’ Teso- lution saved them and cooled the mob, who finally re- red; and go the matter stands at present. Meanwhile the excitement is kept up by the report that a large body of men are on their way from Honduras to take possession of the islands.
