Decker, Wilder, Dickinson, Peck, Conkling and D. Wright favored the motion to strike out the clause, and denounced the long lock scheme as one to advance pri- vate interests. Mr. Lrrruzsouy spoke in favor of the lock extension, and declared that Senator Prosser was deserving of thanks from the State of New York for ori it. Mr. Mn.uKeN spoke in favor of the against the extension scheme. After a protracted debate the long lock section was siricken out, the tax was reduced from eleven-twentieths to half a mill, and the bill ordered to the third reading. The South and West street and East avenue C Railroad bills were referred to be reported complete. Canal and ‘The Connecticut Campaign. GRERT POLITICAL DEMONSTATIONS IN BRIDGEPORT. Brincerort, March 30, 1860. This city is in a blaze to-night. The greatest democratic meeting of the campaign was held here. No hall being large enough, a tent was erected during ‘be day which held over 4,000 persons. The feature of the occasion was the appearance of Mayor Wood, who arrived this afternoon from Waterbury. He was received at the depot by an immense concourse of veople, who formed into procession and escorted him to nis lodgings. At seven o’clock a torch light procession was got up upon an extensive scale. It was two miles long. The meeting was called to order at eight o'clock, and the Hon. J. C, Loomis called to the chair. Destructive Fire at Inde; Twenty Buildings yed. ‘Mo. 30—2 A. M. » March A fire broke out here at about eleven o'clock last mdence, Me.— The loss, they fear, cannot be lees than $100,000, and the fire is still raging. The fire of last night broke out in the di James orm shel —— corner of os fins square, and in 8] e exertions to stop it, it pro- gressed until it ed every house on the east side and several dwellings in the immediate vicinity. The wind was blowing a gale at the time, and large flakes of fire were carried half a mile, several times setting fire to houses tbat distance from the confiagration. At least twenty substantial buildings were burned. The probable loss is about $150,000. The following are some of the logers: J. Beckham, $12,500, insured ; J. Robinson, $2,500, no insurance; Robinson & Norris, $1,000, no insurance; Dr. Jathmore, $1,500—insured $300; J. F. Nor- ris $1,000, po insurance; W. & C. N. Thomas, $5,000,” no’ insurance; M. Sampson, $5,000, insured for $1,500; J. & J. Saldoneils, $2,000, no inaurance. Mr. Sal- doveils’ residence was also consumed, upon which there was an ipaurance of $3,000. Lan; & MoClenshan and J). W. MeCienaben each lose largely, but the amount is not known. The house of Mr. Rodevaiso, which was aiso covsumed, was valued at at $20,000. Altogether, the fire in the largest and most destructive that has ever oc- curred in our city. The Central Overiand Mail. St. Josmrn, Mo., March 30, 1860. The ceatral overland mail, with Utah dates to the 17th inet., arrived bere last night. The news is meagre and upimportant. In view of the great increase of the juve- pile portion of the community, Brignam Young is starting public echools and academies. The Jordan range is most- ly covered with snow. The weather was changeable w thetorms of rain and snow. ia Legislature. HareisnurG, March 30, 1860. ‘The Senate bill for the relief of the Sunbury and Erie Railroad was negatived in the House to-day on the ques- tion of its final passage. The Missourt St slature. ‘Sr. Louis, March 30, 1860, The Missouri Legislature adjourned sine die this morn- ing, but Governor Stewart immediately issued a procia- mation call an extra session forthwith, for the purpose of consultation upon the objectionable features of the Railroad bill.
