Wepnespay, Jan. 18—6 P M. "The ease in the money market noticed yesterday ‘wad quite as marked to-day, though rates are still maintained with a great deal of firmness. On call, ‘the supply at 7 is in excess of the brokers’ wants, ‘Dut no one is willing to part with his money be- Dow seven, until the prospect becomes fair that he ‘will\have to keep it over night unless he accepts 6 or 6}. At the discount houses the supply of good paper is still in excess of the money seeking in- ‘vestment in notes, and we quote, accordingly, first elase short accebtances at 7, and the very best mer- eantile paper, over sixty days to run, at 7 #8, with Wittle currency at the lower figure. Capitalista are still uneasy about the state of Political affairs and the non-organization of Congress; many look for a @istorbed condition of affairs and an active money market throughout the year. They argue that the Presidential election is sure to agitate the pub- Nie mind to such an extent as to dis- tarb confidence, check enterprise and limit commerce. Should the quadrennial contest have this effect it will be an unprecedented circum- stance. The country never knew more prosperous years than 1852 and 1856, the years in which Pre- sidents'Pierce and Buchanan were elected. The public mind in this country is elastic and recupera- tive; it'speedily adapts itself to any condition of circumstances. An alarm which terrifies, or an agi- tation which distresses the public at first, often eases after a time to produce any effect; people become accustomed to it, and carry on their busi ness as usual. It remains to be seen whether the Presidential canvass of 1860, which, in some re- aspects, promises to prove the most embittered in our history, will work in this manner, or whether, as many large bankers and others interested in high rates for money are fond of predicting, the Yeariedestined to be dull in business, ahd marked by no general revival of confidence. The steamship Arabia, from this port to-day, @arried out $182,935 in specie. ‘The foreign exchange market closed with the firmness noticed. yesterday afternoon. Several Neading bankers asked 109 for sterling, and though ‘we hear of little business done over 1083, the market looks as though rates would be higher for the next packet. The price of exchange must mainly depend on the importations of foreign goods. If the importers, especially of dry goods, @ontinue to import foreign goods as freely as they Rave done thus far in January, exchange will rise above the specie shipping point in March, or per- haps February. Leading dry goods houses assure ws that in a short while importations will fall off, ‘the prices in foreign markets being such as to leave mo profit on purchases from them. This assertion will, of course, be received with due caution. Simi- Yar assurances were volunteered by the dry goods importers throvghont last year. There was again a much better feeling on the Bteck Exchange this morning, and stocks advanced all round, New York Central, Galena and Rock Teland being especially active at the advance. Cen- tral opened at 744, advanced to 74}, and sold at 75 en time, but was lower in the afternoon and closed at 74 bid. Rock Island was in demand at 63} for each in the middle of the day, and closed 63 bid. ‘Galena was done at 623, closing at 62j bid. Toledo gold at 19}; the increase on the second week of January was $5,500. State stocks and bonds were more in demand. In the afternoon the market was ‘well sustained, with the exception of New York entra) and Illinois Central, and stocks closed steady at the following quotations:—Virginias, 91 a4; Missouris, 79} a 4; Canton, 16} a 17; Cumber- Band, 15} a {; Pacific Mail, 753.76; New York Gentral, 74 sj; Erie, 8j aj; Hudaon River, 414 a 42; Harlem preferred, 324 a 33; Reading, 37} a 38; Michigan Central, 37 a 3; Michigan Southern gua- vanteed, 155 a 16; Panama, 1274 a 3; Illinois Cen- ‘tral, 563 8 57; Galena, 624 a 3; Toledo, 19f, and Rock Jaland, 63 a j. ‘The business at the Sub-Treasury to-day was as fellows:— vee $252,179 86 000 00 + 63,283 23 +7,092,801 68 The exchanges at the Bank Clearing House this morning were $20,393,714 93, and the balances 9853 ,386 08. BEEF CATTLE. ‘We have again to record another of the mest inactive of all market days experienced at Forty-fourth street for years. The extreme dulnesa and consequent low price of beef cattle, which has been the most couspicuous characteristic in the cattle market for so long a time, is in no manner passed, but, if possible, butchers grow more in- different each week. The cattle yarded in the various yards this week, though not #0 good as could be desired, were nevertheless of » very fair average quality, and very decided improvement on the offerings of previous weeks for some considerable time past. Prime cattle sold at 0c. per Ib., fat ones at 9c., and good marketable offer- ings were disposed of at 8c. per Ib., while inferior to common and ordinary ranged from be. to 7}¢0., and barely marketable at that. A few fancy cattle were on sale, and some of them brought prices higher than our outside quotations, but selections from the yards were made at our general rates. At Bergen Hill there were sold on Monday about 1,000 head at oa r Tange of prices below; and at the city yards—Browning’s, Chamberlin’s and 0’ Brien’s— where the eapely was ee sinall, jast week's prices were maintained for all kinds. ‘The total receipte of ail stock at all the yards for the week and last week were as fol- lows:— We a eng.
