Jax. 16.—This Court, which has been adjourned from day to day pro forma, no business being ready, was again opened this morning, when the following gentlemen were sworn on the Grand Jury:— Duncan F. The Court was, by statute, required w call the attention of the Grand Jury to the ordinary topics; he was ignorant of what busiuess the District Attorney may have to lay be- fore them, and beyond that their general duties had been well defined by the acts of tho Legislature. Their dutics were also fully developed in the oath they had taken. Furthermore, he would say tothem, that it ar twelve ‘of their body to concur in the finding of a bill of indict- ment, and that they must bave sixteen present when the; transact any business whatever. In the Fggre onic of duties they should remember, that while idl = prom emdyg they also have o Lee a the citizen. ‘hen a complaint is preferred they feould remember that the party is not on trial, and they should require such evidence, before finding & bill, as would ratisty them as petty jurors. The dnding of a bill of in- dictment against a citizen is a very serious matter, even if the party ehould subsequenlly be acquitted.’ The Grand Jury sbould be satisfied that there is suffi- cent evidence to put the party on trial, and if they are s0 satisiied, then it was their duty to ‘act with- out mnslice, without prejudice and ‘‘without fear,” in the language of their oath, in the discharge of their great and ftolemn doty. There are several cazes of murder which will be brought before you, aud as they involve the lives ef the accused, ii behoover you to examine the evidence with care and attention.
