A ¥ew Port m Inpuna_ Drvonces—Last ‘week, ne we see from a report in the Howard Oounty Tri. Same; an important case under our divorcs laws was do- by | Junge Buckles, of that circuit. Briefly the case . Wm. Hoffman, of New York ety, came te Kokoma in spril, 1857, filed a complaint, procured pab- Meation of notice to his wife Emma, and on the 5th of Jano @Duained a decree ‘orce. On the 28d of October, 1858, ie divorced wife fled a complaint demanting that the di- waree be annulled on the ground tha: eu fruadu- Fauy procured, ber burband not being a resident of Beward county, but of New York city, and that she bad ‘me infermation of the proceedings til! long after the decrco wen mese, ‘Atior Jong examination of testimony and a fall and able argument, Judge Buckles decided that war not a resident of the county at the time ‘Bitmg his divorce complaint, and set azide the decree geant- fag. Thus Mr. Hoflman found himself a married man fm wppleasantly short metre. This case may givo the pab- She abroad to understand that divorces are not so casily mained in this State as they used tobe. Under the old Tew, any one resident, to commence a divorce suit and @rry through, as ip this case, without his wite ever Irnewing it, bas only to ewear to'a ‘ie; that is, to his dona ide resicence here. Now the law requires the applicant $e be a resideut actually, and to have been tor a year, Before he can begin asuit wt all. Non resident rebols matrimonial laws will do well to cut this para ‘aph out, and save themselves the expense of a journey Siena’ to xet a divorce. Fapay, Nov. 11, 1859. ‘The money market is without change in rates, but thera ‘f not such a large amount of capital offering as was the sage a week since. Call loans, however, are easy at 5 & BH per cent, accordingto security, Ac.; the regular money Ieaders are not allowing over 4 por cont for money loft with them by customers. For first class paper, tho rate ranges from 5)¢ a 63¢ according to date, with an occasional exception, where a very prime bill, at 30 a 45 days, goes a8 5 per cent. Foreign exchange is very dull. The rate are from 110 to 110% for 60 day sterling bills, aud 110% a & for short wight; there are some very fair commercial bills in the market at 100% aX. France go at 5124 913%, and sight drafts on Paris at 6.100 6.11%. Tho exchange market has, to all appearance, 2 downward tendency. ‘She steamer Arago, which sails to-morrow for Europ, ‘will take from $800,000 to $1,000,000 in gold bare recoived per Atlantic. ‘The course of the domestic exchanges is shown by the Solowing table of the price of sight bills om New York at the cities mentioned:— “1% promium. Great surprise exists at the high rate at which Kastorn exchange continues to rule at Chiougo, notwithstanding ‘he heavy shipments of produce. It is surmised that Southern merchants have been free buyers of bills on ‘Rew York at Chicago. Thore are a number of nowspa- Pers published at Chicago, all of which publish money ar- ticles; bot none of them has vouchsafed any explanation af the phenomenon. Our stock market was rather more active to-day. Thore ‘was a rather better demand for the Western shares, soom- §ngly based on the traffic return published in to-day’s Higuip. It must be remembered, however, tbat in ashort while navigation will close in the West, and from that period until corn begins 9 come on freely, the freight traffic of these Nues will fall off—though we look Still for @ moderate increase over last year throughout the winter. On the roade between this aud Chicago, the closing of the lakes wili not cause as large & diminution of trattic. The above exhibit cannot but be regarded as highly satisfactory. The dry goods import is again in excess of last yoar and the year before, The figures are $945,000, against $570,000 same week last year, and $614,000 tho same week of 1867. The aggregate import to date is $100,627,- 000, against $53,146,000 to same date last year, and $86,790,000 to same date in 1857. Notwithstanding the above excess of goods, we hear that preparations are being made by leading houses for alarge import trade next spring. It is expected that the banks will afford un- usual facilities for the purchase of foreign goous; and each merchant, relying upon his neighbor's curtailing his orders, will avail himself of the opportunity to the fullest extent. This, at least, is the opinion of some of the most intelligent members of the trade with whom we have con- versed. If the opinion be verified by the event, the yoar 1860 will be far more disastrous for the dry goods trade than 1857 or 1859. It is the custom with our loading packers, in packing ners pork, to put 196 Ibs. in each barrel, which, whon salted, will weigh out 210 ibs. to 220 Ibs. peso according to the quality of the meat; but in many , hovever, irre- spoveible packers are in the babit of Pati ool 180 Ibs. in each barrel, so that the buyer of such is thus cheated out of ten to fifteen pounds of moat, which makes quitea mar- rin for the dishonest packer, Another trick # practised to vome extent, namely, ‘marking up” the woight of casks of baoon five to ten pounds, according to circumstances, snd calling this “eoakage’’ when reolamation is claimed. Theee are, however, not new practices, aa they have been retorted wo by adventurers in the trade for a long time. A tew trick, however, was developed last season, which is quite ingenious and profitable. In cutting up the bog the Whole of the back hone is left attached to one of the sides, and then by simply removing the ribs from the othor side a clear pide le made, with lees of bone than in the usual Way. The ide with the back bone attached is packed as mess pork or smoked as bacon, thus compelling the inno- cent buyers to pay for moro bene than they should. Now, this having been brought to the notice of the pork Inapoctors of New York and New Orleana, they are detormined, wo mnderstand, that they will pate no pork #0 pat ap in fu- ture, so thut thore outeide individuals who intend operat. ing on the back bone exporiment the proseat soason had better consider the matter beforehand, lest they may find that it will cost more than it will come to, and thus prove in the end @ most injudicious operation. But, if their intention ts by eollecung statistics in such @ Med and ip such form as to operate upon vetional legielation in favor of a high prowetive tariff'in bebalf of their interest, we doubt whother their scheme will prove ekher very cage sumg aa pers: with ‘he people, who remember the free wool statstios, 30 Hberaliz vala fr; 00. 8. ‘& former occasion, to wwfluenee the action of Copgrees whon framing the taritf of 1867. The approach of cold weather, and with ib the close of canal and river navigation, has naturally a tendency to cause an advance in price of almost every kind of mar- ketable domestic produce; and although we have no very materia! changes to make in our list of quotations, yet wo repeat the warning, to those who are able to get in their winter supplies ef food. This anticipated rise in prices would have been made ore this, wore it not for the contixued mild state of the woather; but a fow such days as yesterday would make o material change in market prices, Last week retail prices in the moat trade ro- mained stationary, with an upward tondenoy. In the butter = trade = we = have nothing new to note. In the article of game the supply has been quite large, and the prices have, consequently, declined. ‘The game hunters im the Western forests and prairies are having excellent sucoees, but they scom to have a doli- cacy about sending their stock to the North, partly be- cause the weather |s not cold enough, and again because our game laws prohibit its gale. There are many, how- ever, who treat the game laws with impunity, and fur- nish the market with a tolerably good supply; so that our hotels and restaurants are kept well supplied. The mild weathor bas had a depreesing Influence on the poultry trade, and the prices this week are somewhat reduood. As Thanks- giving Day approaches, we may look for a very material change in prices, eapecially if we have cold weather. From present reports and appearances, there is a largo stock in the country, and an overwhelming amount wail likely reach this market about that inter Potatows continue to come in in large quantities; but the eupply of winter Potatoes ie quite limitod.
