l al duced the conspirators, is the more deeply ‘agitated on this all-absorbing subject. But, after all, the fate of Brown and bis four companions in the dock is of comparatively little consequence beside the collateral issues to which the affuir is giving rise. Here are Senators and members of Congress, Governors and ex-Governors of States, and other high functionaries and leading meu throughout the Northern States, who are shown to have en- tered into, or at leust have been cognizant of, a conspiracy to introduce a reign of blood and carnage in the Southern States, to provoke an internecine war, and to bring ruin and disas- ter on the entire country. And all for what? With a few, such as John Brown himself, the mo- tive had its origin in a diseased philanthropy. With others, such as Seward, Sumner, and Hale, the motive was the advancement of their political fortunes, And as to the rest, they were only actuated by the sordid motive of plunder, pilfering, and the splendid chances of speculating for a rise in cotton. If the re- presentatives of these various classes were all brought to the same punishment the commu- nity would be perfectly satistied. But, while the crazy fanatic and his four surviving asso- ciates end their career on the scaffold, the Senators and Governors, and merchants and parsons who urged them on, hold up their heads and profess to be “all, all honorable men.” We do irust that the law officer of the federal government will give to their cases his most earnest attention, and, if the proofs justify such action, have them all arrested, indicted and tried for treason, Bui if they cannot be convicted under the strict letier of the law, we expect, at least, that such of the conspirators us oceupy seats in Congress will be expelied irom that body or impeached for their compli city in this insurrectionary movement. In the meantime, the whole country is agi- tated to a degree never known since the adop- tion of the censtitution. The Harper’s Ferry movement is the great event of the day. The papérs are full of it, politicians make it the text of theirspeeches, and all men are talking of it. At first it was treated slightingly, audas a mere riet or outbreak, without any political bearing. Now it has loomed up to the dimensions of a mighiy event ia our career. Let it be thoroughly examined and understood, for it constitutes an epoch in our national history. Tum Insrecrion or Sream Borters.—The Special Committee of the Common Conucil entrusted with the duty of reporting upon the resolution to establish a bureau of steam boiler fnepection, as suggested by the HeRatp some time ago, held their first meeting on Thursday and took some evidence in the matter. We hope they will lose notime in reporting favora- bly, before another terrific explosion occurs and a senious loss of life easues. We hardly think, from the melancholy experience we have jad for the past year, that much evidence is necessary to convince any one of the necessity of inspecting all the steam boilers used under the streets and in crowded factories at least once a year. Waar Asovur Nassau Srreer?—How is the job of widening Nassau street going on? Have the Aldermen made all their arrange- ments aboutit yet? It will not do todelay this most nefarious but most congenial scheme o disturbing Nassau street in its present position, as it is relieving itself by the business of the city moving up town. Surely there is mischie and corruption enongh in this job to stimulate the Aldermen. NEWS FROM WASHINGTON. Mtalian Affairs=The San Juan Island Question, dc. OUR SPECIAL WASHINGTON DESPATCH.
