Effects of Broderick’s Death—The Steamer Shubrick Among the Indians—Ouibreak in the State Prison— Summary of the Week's News—Fall Election Re- turns—Intrresting lems—Marriages, Births and Deaths, cc. ‘The startling and rancorous discussions of the late political campaign and the tragic result which followed have not yet been forgotten. The death of Broderick caused a gloom that perhaps will not entirely fade away for months to come. The tones of mourning are still to be leard, and the loss the State has experienced in his un- timely fall forms a topic up to the present time in nearly every quarter. Judge Terry is at Stockton. He has not yet been indicted. The San Francisco Grand Jury ad- journed without finding a Dill, thinking, no doubt, that the obligation to doso lies with the Grand Jury of the adjoining county of San Mateo, where the duel wag fought THE SENATORIAL VACANCY. Itseems to be the opinion new thatGoy. Weller will decline to appoint any successor to Mr. Broderick. It is understood that_he has written to this effect to several of the aspirants. The papers discuss very freely the aspect of Senatorial affairs. A multitude of views are presented. Among others that the appointee of the Go vernor would be endorsed by him as the most fitting man in the State for the position, and ho would in this wise give offence to all other candidates; and again, he would be debarred from op. posing the election by the Legislature of his own choice. Weller will be a candidate, and pro- bably stands the best chance of success. ft is true that the appointed Senator would only hold his seat for a few weeks at the beginning of the session, and his services could not be of any great use; but he would draw several thousand dollars in mileage which makes the appointment a very desirable one. Mr. Gwin does not enjoy much of the public confidence, and it would be aceptable to the people at large if he had a colleague in the Senate. The following named persons are spoken of as candidates:—John B. Waller, M. S. Latham, J. P. Hoge, J. W. Denver, James A. McDougal, John Nugent, N. E. Whitesides, Volney E. Howard, B. F. Washington, Ss. W. Inge, T. J. Henley, Frederick, Billings, R. A. Thompson, W. 'T. Barbour and Ferris Forman. ‘THE UNITED STATES STEAMER SHUBRICK AMONG THE INDIANS. In consequence of intelligence from Puget Sound that the Indians in that locality had again landed on Smith’s Island, threatening to destroy the lighthouse there, Com- mander DeCamp, Inspector of the Twelfth Lighthouse District and Captain of the United States steamer Shubrick, has left this city to take special command of his vessel which arrived in this port yesterday, Mr. West, master of the Shubrick, and commander in absence of De Camp, bas been engaged through the summer in rendering ai to the light houses, and 1 acting in concert with the army during the excitement consequent upon the occupation of San Juan Isiand by the American troops under General Harney’s command, and algo in conveying Mr. Campbell, the United States Boundary Commissioner from poiut point wherever his duties called him. ‘A hostile party of Indians were lately captured on Smith’s Island, by D. Turner, gunner of the Shubrick, and a party of seamen, and conveyed to the main land, with an admonition not ‘to land again on the island. This was much better than te shoot them, and it is presumed that they will appreciate the clemency exercised. Captain De Camp, who is xbout six feet six incnes high, seemsalways to inspire respect and confidence among the red men, 20 that wherever he goes he is received by the Indians as a great white chief. He is known among them all along the coast as Hyass Tyee, or the great chief ef the white men. OUTBREAK AT THE STATE PRISON—LOSS OF LIFE. ‘An attempt was made on the 27th ult., by about thirty to escape from the State prison at San Quentin. 8 that these men had been during the forenoon ‘ed in discharging a cargo of wood from a schooner, which was lying at one of the wharves of the institution: At noon, as usual, they went to dinner, and on their re. turn, thinking the opportunity favorable, rushed .on board the vessel, taking with them one of the guards, named Moon. Some delay occurred in consequence of the hawser which fastened the schooner not being parted, allowing sufficient time for alarm. The guards at once re” paired to the cannon mounted in positions toleommand the bay. They opened fire, and in a brief space dismasted the vessel and killed and wounded a mumber of the convicts on board. Eight rounds of canister and grape were fired, and those on board having sought sheler in the hold, very soon displayed a flag showing their desire tosurrender. The schooner was brought back and the prisoners secured. ‘The guard was carried off. A. D. Moon had one of bis arms shattered, which will probably have to be amputated. Two convicts were killed, A. B. Winchell and Jobn Dixon. William Burk was mortally wounded, Eight other prisoners suffered injuries, but not of afatal nature. It is said that the convicts on discover- ing that tire was about being opened on them, held up Moon in front, thinking the guards at tho prison would de- sist, Dut by an understanding with the prison authorities, such a coni rency could not prevent the cannon 0) ning ‘on escapes. guards have to take this risk. the fol lowing eonvicts were either killed or wounded * John Dixon, sent from San Francisco for grand larceny, four years, died half an hour after being ae tal; shot im the breast. From the low prices ruling for these oe ariceediir ming xin Lode it can be inferred that shipments have diminished ; wut stocks here are yet too large to induce the expect of any imme- diate improvement from such a cause, From domestic Atlantic ports advices continue to be to the effect that shipments are very slack.
