The bark arrived in this port frem Furope with a full cargo of heavy goods early last worth. She is now at Matanzas, loading under charter for Faimouth, England. Before the inward cargo of the bark ‘wesbalf discharged, four of the crew attempted to run fawsy, and for safe keeping were placed in prison. Ia a @sy or two after this two others of the crew and ‘Whe mate were altacked with ‘Beard his une officer, and two of the original crew. As soon as (he capiain had Jett bis veazel the Custom House officer assumed the ssbarge of everyihing on board, rummaged over the cabin ‘and.private stores of the céptain, got glorious” himself, luced the carpenter and the two sallora to imbibe na freely as himself. About this time a Greek sailor came on beard the bark and seduced away the two remaining sailors of the orew, under the pretence that they could get higher wages by working on the railway, where 1 is well known they went. In five or six days the natura! 00d cunatitution of Captain G—— and careful attention, ‘et tbe hospital, enabled him to evade the of Yellow , and he returned to the command of bis bark, ‘finding only the carpenter and the Custom House officer on eard—his cabin turned topsy turvy, his wines aad other stores all congumed, and everywing oa board the greatest disorder, Afver g bis cabin and ves- sel into something iike ship shape order with his own bands, Captain G. made inquiries, and ascertained that the ‘we runaway sailors were to be found at the Guanajay Railway,at work. One of the sailor’s family being known ‘bo Captain G. in bis native land, he was particularly anx- Yous to recover bim to take bina back to Earope in the bark; therefore, prosuring = guide and interpreter, he ‘weat to Guensjey, a distance of eome tix leagues. Apply- to the fureman of the works for perm'ssion to search Jor bin two sailors, it was civilly granted bim, but a mes- ‘Benger was observed to be despalched on a locomotive 10 ‘B distant pert of the works, where no doubt the two aaiiors Were employed, and to which Captain G., in his then enfeedied state, was unabie to walk, he having 80 receat. dy ieft the hospital. Monpay, Angust 29—6 P. M. The bank statement of to-day compares as fol- lows with that of last week:— Week ed’ Z i ire’ Boe 50! e114 Se0.190 sitcsetas asic 7 Aug 27.. 117/641/070 20/728/066 a’234’a79 7 Deoresse $449,129 675,882 83,90 1 Alb 008 Considering that the banks received $2,126,000 on Satarday from California, and $776,000 to- day from New Orleans, this statementexhibits them in a very strong position. Considering the heavy export of Saturday, 20th, the loss of specie is not large; we presume that to-morrow morning the reserve will amount to about $22,500,000, The decline in loans is an extremely satisfactory feature. Some of the banks, we notice, have increased their dis- connts; the Manhattan, for instance, has again “strengthened” itself, according to its pecnliar method, by increasing its discounts and seittag rid of its specie; but the general move- Ment ig conservative and deserving of the highest prak A steady adherence to this course for the y Gt forty days will enable the banks to afford merchante all the assistance they can legiti- mately expect in October and November, and will obviate all risk of general embarrassment. Provi- dence has interposed most opportunely to protect us from the consequences of over importations by granting the West a superabundant crop; it only remains now for the banks to beware of repeating the error from the penalty of which they hare thus escaped. The circle of buyers at the Stock Exchange widens, the commission business increases, aod prices continue to advance. The facts presented in this morning’s Huraup in reference to the past and future movement in Western breadstaffs were ibe subject of nluch comment in financial circles; the prevailing opinion being that, in consequence of the upusnally small shipments of breadstufts from the West this spring, the fall and winter movement will be vunusnally large. There are mauy who can recollect the time when forwarders had to wait ten days to get their pro- duce sent over the New York Central and Erie; the more sapguine among the operators of the day predict a similar rush of produce to the East this fall, Thus far, however, the movement by rail is confined to Ilinois. The receipts by the Rock Island, Galena and Illinois Central contiaue to be very large, and may possibly prevent the antici- pated decline in the gross earnings of August, 23 compared with August, 1858; but in the other States the effect of the crop will not be felt till September. The Michigan roads, the Toledo, and other roads in Obio and Indiana, will probably show a falling off in August. When the tide of traffic does reach these roads the increase will be very great. The most active stock on the list to-day was again New York Central, which opened at 743—an advance of {—rose to 743, and closed at 74} bid. A sensation was created by a sale of 4,000 shares of cash stock at the morning board, and for some time the impression pre- vailed that the sale was fictitious. We presume it to have been genuine. There were large purchases for cash at 69 a 70, on which the profit accrued is large enough to tempt the buyers to realize. The prevailing opinion among the friends of the stock is that it will shortly stand at the old price—between 80 and 90. All the Western stocks were active—particularly Rock Island, which advanced 1 per cent. The President, Mr Farnum, is in town, and reports that the business offering on the line of the road this full will task the capacity of the road to the utmost. Toledo ad- vanced 1} percent. The earnings on this road are likely to increase very largely in September; the expenses are less than at apy previous period in the history of the property. Had the Toledo five years ago discontinued running on that portion of the road which they have now abandoned, the company would have been in as good condition at present as the Ashtabula line, of which the stock is ten or twenty per cent above par. Michigan Southern guaranteed is very firm at an advance of 1} per cent. The bears are making their deliveries at a loss of four or five per cent, and renewing their contracts at a large difference from the cash price. Hudson River was in demand this morning, and rose one per cent. The intrinsic improvement in this property would tell upon the price if the stock became active. The business in State stocks and bonds was very light; prices were unchanged. Erie bonds continue to be in request. A Michigan Southern second mortgage sold for 45. We notice a sale of the new Missonri sevens, issued to the Pa- cific Railroad, at 85. These bonds are just as hind- ing on the State as the sixes, which command 824 a3. In the afternoon the market improved, and stocks closed firm at the following quotations:— Missouris, 82j a 3; Canton, 173.184; Cumberland Coal, 144.215; Pacific Mail, 82} a 4; New York Central, 747 a 75; Evie, 53 a6; Hudson River, 34} 025; Harlem, 10} a 4; Reading, 44.8 3; Michigan Central, 45] a 46; Michigan Southern, 7 a 3; do. guaranteed, 253 a 26} Panama, 117} a 118; Il linois Central, 653 a 66; Galena and Chicago, 69} aj; Cleveland and Toledo, 24j a}; Chicago and Rock Island, 66] a §. There is no change in the mones het, The fomend, Wuth from merchants and brokers, is slight; and since the banks have begun to pursue a congervative policy the amount of money seeking employment has considerably increased. Exchange is still quite flat. Leading bankers ask 110 for 60 day sterling bills, but no sales of any amount could be made at these rates. The business of the Sub-Treagury was as follows to-day:— Total rece'pis, ~—For customs... Total payments Balance..... The exchanges at the Clearing House this morn” ing amounted to $22,775,912 29, and the balances to $1,348,035 66. : The Baltimore Exchange of Saturday says:— ‘The money market has tightened up zomewhat within the week, and money is less cati!y objainavie than it was, ‘both as the banks and on the street. Tne street rates for loans haye advanced, and we now quote prime endorsed paper at 734 a8 per cent, and first class singie name do. ‘at 9 8 10 per cent for short and long dates.
