Suspicions have long been broad that large sums are constantly abstracted from the public purse by meuzs of fraudulent, forced or ‘stretched vouchers, and some of them are now being verified. Fabulous sums are demanded and avyouched ‘for onder heads of clerk hire, copying, translating, &0., vwhich are evidently intended to cover expenses for ‘wines, dinners, borse hire, &., not auditable, ‘The President is determined to hold all officers’ ac- ‘Counts to tho strictest scrutiny, and where frauds are at- tempted, to reject the claims and prosecute the offenders ‘Proofs accumulate in various cases cot mentionable, Thi ‘Process is to be retroactive, and cocasions many absentees @monget those who have had accounts adjusted during the ‘feign of the present administration. The President bas been importuned in vain. The Vincennes has been cut twenty two months ‘and the Marion sixteen—not twenty three and twenty- ‘one, a8 some of be uewepapers bave erroneously stated, The Sccretary of the Navy bas tasued the following “general oder," uamely: “No order will be given to medical officers of the navy to revder professional aid to apy pereon who is not attached to the naval service or on. board aehip-of war. Tae Department will confide in their humanity to respond Ww any appesi for their assistance whenever the requisite uid cannot be obtained elsewhere, An exception mey be made in favor of vessels in distress, when, if neceessry tosecure the requisite medical ald, the authority of the commander may be interposed.” Secretary Thompson has returaed to Washington. Laura Keene’s Theatre—#irst Night of the Beason. ‘Miss Keene commenced on last evening the third sea- fon at ber agreeable theatre, and the clroumstance at- tracted a very large and cordially disposed audience, ‘Long before the curtain rose the piscards so cheering to managers, but eo distressing to the general public, ‘‘Stand- ing room only,” appeared in front of the box office, and oon after there was not even standing room. The thea- tre has a bright, fresh, renovated look, and has evidently been put in thorough order. The naw covering for the benches—crimson in place of yellow—is much pleasanter tothe eye. «Otherwise the general appearance of the house is nearly the same as before. ‘The performances embraced two pieces new to this city. The first wae = comedy-drama in two acts, by Tom ‘Taylor, called ‘The House or the Home,” and a lear cage of larconious abstraction from “«Lom Perils dans la Demeure.” Mr. Taylor did it for the Adelphi theatre, London, where it was first acted in May laat, We give annexod the London and New York casts :-—~ Miss Ada C1 Cou ‘The plot of this play is very elight, and wa shail ue bus few words in describing it. Mr. Chetwood isa riving po litician, who neglects his wife in order to attead more strictly te hie Parllameutary duties. Loft to hergelf, thre, Chetwood flirts to the extreme vergo of ruin with Frode rick Wardour, a sucking dip:omat, who neglects his pros- pects as severely as the husband cultivates his. The guar- dian angel for all parties is Mrs. Wardour, who manages to broak off the illegal flirtation and give the erring couple & good moral lesson at the same time. The incidents with which this plot is elaborated are very trivial, but arranged with o great deal of tact, The characters sre very well drawn, the dialogues smooth and agreeable, though not so brilliant as one might reasonably expect from the auihor. Tne piece is one of those unobjectionable, intercsting affairs which, ‘without being exceedingly clever, are still always agree- able, It was carefully acted. Miss Keene has changed the cbaracter which she acts s0 far as to make it repre aent the sister instead of the mother of Frederick. It is ‘hereby somewhat weakened, but perhaps the altsratioa was more thun stoned for by the which Misa Keene acted. more charmingly, or play moro artistically, Mirs Clifton ‘Was good, but rather too much. Violent alterna- tone and striking poscs are out of place in pieces of this order. Mr. Jordan, whose entrée seemed espeoially satis fectory to the audience, played Chetwood very well. Inthe déncument he was especially good, pases: tho rls of the injured husband with marked dignity and aplomb. dir. Daly was ao little stiff at times, but on the wavic pleyed an untbankfal par; creaitably, The play was re- ceived with marked satisfaction by the audience, and will Coubilees be a fixture in the repertory of the theatre. ‘The afterpiece was a burletta, called ‘Our Clerks,” and is founced upon the call made upon the London shopmen to eplizs in the army in case the country should need their services. It is not especially appropriate to this locality, but was made Buocessful by the excellent ae of Mizsee Clifton, Welis, M‘Carthy, Mr. F. A. Vincent, J. A. Smutn, Poters apd otners. The perform wees of the evening were quite entertain. ipg, and the excellent orehestra under Mr. Thomas Baxer’e baton was not the least agrevable feature. Mr. Baser’a overture was very cleverly arranged and well Played. Police Intelligence. About a quarter before six o'clock yesterday morning, policeman Golden, of the Sixth preciact, discovered the dead body of a ragpicker lying in the entry way of lhe tenement house No. 4i Baxter sircet, under circumstances which led hin to believe that deceased had been robbed acd murdere'. Tho body was quite ood, showing that death bad taken place 20: ¢ hours previously, A severe cat over the"ear and several bruises about the head first att'acted the attention of the officer, and caused some ‘cion in big mind as tothe nature of the cage. Wren be « xax ined the clothing, however, and fouad that deceaged’s pockets bad boon rifled of their contents, and were turned inside out, but little doubt remained as to (Le cause of death. The body was removed t> the station house end efforts were made to ascertain the mame and residence of deceased, pot jp yan, No ono in the house where the body waz found knew anything concerning the matter, which leads to the belief that deceased had been assaulied im the street, aud crept inio the hallway for refuge, and dite: ero. Coroner Schirmer was in attendance at an early hour, and mmvyestigated the ocsurrence in concart with the police; bul as everything appeared involved in mystery, it was decided to pestpore the inquest until eight o'clock this morning. “A post mortem examination of tbe body, mado ‘vy Dr. George Bouton, went to show that death had been caused by rupture of the spleen from fracsure of two of the left ribs. The head was covered with braisoa as if in ficted with a club or some dul instrument, and blood flowed from & lacerated wound, about an inch in length, just above the ear, The fracture of the ribs and the rup- ture of the epleen bad probably been produced by @ se- vere kick, or. blow froma stone ora club. Broken frag menta cf the ribs were forced into the spleen, showing evidently that great violence had been reaoried to, During the day a German called at the station hous and identified the body, but was unable to give the name or residence of the decexsed. He said ne had often zen him in the upper of the city, bet never know what his name was. It is to be hoped, Lowever, that the friends of deceased, will come forward to day and claim the boty, or elze it must necessarily be sent to Potter’s Field for interment Deceased was about filty years of age, and apparently a German by birth.’ He was dreesad in dark brown clothes and boots much worn, A bag con- taining a few pieces of rag and on old rope, belonging to deceaged wae fovnd in the hallway, and can be seen on application at the Sixth procinct etation boure. Last evening the police received information which will oly lead to the detection of the murderers. During the bight the officers were following up the clue, but with what success wo have been unable to aacertain. It is yery probable, however, that the investigetion before Corouer Sobirmer to day will tead to some important de- velopements, and that the mystery eurrounding the fate of the poor ragpicker may bo fuily cleared up.
