Opening of a Wagon Road from Salt Lake Velley to the Columbia Rive (From the San Francisco Herald } A few days ago we published the order of Gi ne} yneral Har- Getaibng Capt. H. D. Wallen, Fourth infantry, in com- 10 of a suitable corps, for too purpose of opening a good Wagon route between the valley of the Great Sa, Laxe and the Cojumbta river. This move on the part of Gene ral Harney is timely, and fraught with good to the Depart- Ment of Oregon, and must necessarily reflect benedsial'y upon the Siate. ’ The delachmeut under Capt, Walien will consist of a force sulliciently large for all the purposes of the expedition, aud admirably supplied with the requisite material. The perfectly upaisturbed condition of Oregon at ibe present time—a condition enforced by the brilliant campaign of General Ciarke—leaves General Harney un- molested and at tiberty to employ the force under bis command in the construction of great national works, ia- creasing the facilities for commanication between the eastern ani weslern extremes of our country, and perforating Mormon exclusiveness with another of those great arteries of travel which, more than aaything elee, seem to be dr 1 by the Saints. Advices from Utah lead tothe in uce that aconsiderable number ot tbe misguided an: sin enveloped people of that region are really snxious to escape from the presence of Brigham Young andj bis murdering ‘Danites,”” but dare not ven tore without a sufficient escort. The opening of on easy und direct route to Fort Dales would not only shorten the distance aud facilitate the movements of emigrants to thie coast, but would ingure military protection to a greater extent than can be obtained on any other of the existing routes. It would also establieh the means of rapid com. munication between our troops stationed in Utah and thoss w Oregon and Caiffornia; and it is altogether probable \bat after it shall have been completed Utah will be ap. proached for military purposes from the Pacific side, tn stead of again rescrting to thom long and fearfully trying Marches from the Missouri river.
