[From tho Cincinnati Gazette, August 18.] THE MYSTERY CLEARING UP—CRITICAL CONDITION . OF DE MaRBAIS AND HIS WIFE. We have very littie to add to yesterday’s account of the facts immediately connected with the tragedy of Tuesday night. We learn that officer Mainster on Monday night saw Do Marbajs sitting on the steps of the assignation house on Plum street, crying. He was asked what was the mattor. He replied that his wife was in there, and was in the babit of going there. As he appeared to bo in liquor, he advised to go bome, and he went off, saying that if matters didn’t cbange before the week was over thero’d bea murder. To gratify the numerous inquiries as to the history of De Marbais, we preeent the following account, which wo believe to be porfectly reliable, Do Marbain” fatber was a Frencbman, bis mother an English or American woman, Hig perente were married in tbig country, and he was born st Baltimore. His father la dead, bat his mother is now living ia New York, and was yeeterday informed by telegraph of the critical condition of her gon and of the tragic acts of which it was tho resu't, Ho was a druggist by profession, and understood his business well. About elbteen months since he married hia wife Blanche, in New York She was at the time reputed to have been tbe mietrese of a wealthy man in California, who had eup- ported her in luxury end ease for twoor three years. Do Marbuig was aware of ber reputation, we teara, when ha married her. Some time after his marriage he went to Philadelphia, where he was placed on trial for forgery, but waa honorably acquitted. Diegusied with Philadelphia, he returned to New York with the intention of removiog to the Wert. In New York he met n person who promiged to find hima situs tion if be would settle in Cincinnati, He accordingly camo to Cincionet! about a year ago, and wag employes fn Scsnlen’s drag store, Five or six months ago the per- von who bad fouvd the situation for De Marbais, being East, learned that Ds Marbain had been tried there for forgery, and upon hia retorn he informed Do Marbais? employ ére that be should no longer consider himself sponsible for Do Marbais’ conduct, ‘This remark eventasted in Do Marbais’ losing his situa: tion, and from that time dated hie misfortune. Unable to fot employment or the menus of rubsistence, he would ave Buarved had not nis wife by her shame earned their Diead. Ibis Vhat De Marbais bad a regular flationf Hght with the “drug clerk” in tho etrect, and chargod his musforsunes upon bim. And it ts further sail that thin clerk followed Do Marbais with an unrelenting vindic- tivencss that kept him effectually out of work. Whother Bianche’s bewuty had anything to do wilh this wo can’t Bay. Read in tho light which this acoount throws upon them, Do Marbaia’ lotters are of x comparatively oary inter preta: tion.
