Hee ee person of the trio that sat on the floor was Phit- Hips. Garrison was not recelved, either publicly or privately, and he takes {¢ out of Joseph Sturge, one of the leaders of the British and Foreign Anti Slavery S2clety, who has recently dicd, snd whose hospitality when living was of the most lavish kiad. Sturge, according to Gar- rison, did a good deal of harm one way and an- other to the anti-slavery cause, but his chief offence waa in neglecting to ask Garrison to @ioner, The British and Foreign Society nas its offices, like the Bunk of Eaogland, and not far ifrom tha! iustitution, aud the business of the one de as methodivsl, not to say slow, as that of the Other. We apprehend further, that from the tong of ‘the resolutions adopted in favor of two Garri- sonian sisters—one white and the other black— the former soliciting alms fur Doctor Cheever’s harch, and the other for the almighty nigger agenerally, the funds do not appear at the all of the almoners, but that the whole British ‘public has buttoned up ite breeches pocket and vfallen back trom Garrisouian grace in the most Gisgusting way. While it is a source of intense satisfaction to ug that the great metropolis of London and the magnificent commercial port of Liverpool have ome to a determination to mind their own busi sRess, it will not be pleasant for some people to know that a wealtby and dainty congregation like that of Doctor Cheever has to send an agent abroad to collect funds for its support, and that she don’t do it. What does Wall street say to that? Bummer Pleasure Travel—Matters at the Watering Places. We have crossed the Rubicon that separates the world of trade and that of pleasure—that is to eay, we have got over the Fourth of July—on which auspicious occasion some two hundred thousand people went out of town, bat finding the temperature slightly Arctic, tarned about ‘nd came back again. Travellers to the sea- Side should take their flannels and furs, a good supply of spirits, preserved meats, and other requisites to enstain life in the high latitudes. Badinage apart, the weather so far, with the exception of a day or two here and there, has not been especially provocative of summer travel. A good many people have gone dat of town; the higher law courts have adjourned over; the fashionable churches are shut Up; people who own or hire country soats have entered upon the delights and the miseries at- tendant thereupon, and a large number of male and female Bohemians—artists, opera singera, Slancurs, etc —are vagabondizing about between Saratoga, St. Catharine’s, the Falls of Niagara, peeping over the Heights of Abraham, or ex- ploring the splendid scenery of the’ forest crowned Saguenay. It is, as yet, too frigid for the White Mountains, and rather early for Newport. Boston is growing to de rather a popular watering place, and, in order to heighten its attractions, the people are going to sell, during this week, all sorts of things at auction, after the fashion of the small towns in Germany. No doubt a considerable quantity of loose cash will be left under the shadow of the Athenian hills, and the hearts of the shop and tavern keepers gladdened thereby. Look- ing toward the South the prospect is not over brilliant. We hear nothing from Cape May nor Old Point, and at the Virginia Springs there are, it appears, hardly three hundred guests all told. Tne President goes to Bedford Springs this week; he will of course attract many fol- Aowers iu that direction. Incidental to this line ef country, we may say a word or two for the ‘benefit of tourists who are, as they say, on the tence as to which way they shall travel. From this city travel to the North and East is any- thing but comfortable or agreeable. A trip up the Hudson by steamboat is pleasant enough; but Heaven defend us from the horrors of a ride on a hot sammer day over any of the roads out of Albany. The cars can only be ventilated by opening the windows, when one is half stifled with dust; there is always crowd, aud between fighting for seats, dangers of accidents—which are becom- ing disagreeably frequent of late—hunger and thirst, this railway riding makes one feel as if he had been thumped and kicked and choked and punched within an inch of his life, and may bo considered as near an approach to perdition as ‘any ordinary sinver can experience in this world. If the free tourist would turn his attention to the mountainous regions of Virginia, Pennsylvania and Tenneesee, he would find it she most agree- able locality for a summer journey. The rail- ways are nearly all new and well equipped. The rate of speed is moderate, for obvious. reasons, ‘The natural beauties of the country have been the admiration of travellers from all parts of the world. It abounds in miperai springs of all possible varieties, and at every tura the eye is greeted by a new and surprisingly beautiful landscape. And the temperature in this locali- ty, though it is far to the south .of us, is cooler and more bracing than in central New York. Formerly the region to which we refer was not accessible without the expenditure of much time acd money, but now the railways have put it within carpet-bag distance of the metropolis. So much for the free and independent tourist. Those who go with the crowd and make the usual trip—Saratoga, the Falls, Canada, Lake George, White Mountains, Newport and Cape May—will get under way with the first hot spell. ‘The city is now full of strangers—Southerners, Cubans, &o.—ready for the exodus, which, as the weather Is not very hot, and as there is to be @ tremendous matrimonial demonstration on the 14th, will not begin until the latter part of this week or the beginning of next. Meanwhile, the hotel keepers at the fashionable resorts are like forsaken ones, They are ready with their magnificent furniture, their gentle- manly clerks, their accomplished and Chester- ficldian waiters, their battalions of artists de cuisine, their polished bootblacks, and all the rest of their immense trains, to take in the lonely traveller, or the loncly travclier’s wife or chil- Gren, or big trunks, and treat them in the most princely way. So let the lonely traveller ap- pear directly, And let Boniface profit in the future by the experiences of the past. Let him be light in bia charges, modest in the extras, small on tue sundries. Let him give his guest good Ginuers to eat, good wines to drink, and good beds to éleep in, aud at a fair price. So shall he receive the reward of success in this life, and when he dies there ehall be inscribed on his tombstone these glorious words: “ He can keep ‘a hotel.” Fires at Montgomery. Stuart, agont of the Press at Liverpool, received by the stonmer Hungarian, yesterday, sayr:—‘The great advantage of the Farther Point station was clearly demonetrated on the arrival of the Hungarian, which, thanks to your very liberal supply of news from that station, placod us in pos tegsion of the flect o' the pews taken out by tho North Briton in the short space of eighteen days after said news left this port—a feat without a parallel.” The steamer Nova Scotiau sails from this port today, and ceapatches leftat No 21 Wal, treet, New York, previous to nix o'clock thie «vening, cap be place! on board at Farther Pons.
