Proceedings ef the American Tract Soelety, American AnthSlavery Society, Chareh | AnthSlavery Society, Consolidated Convention of Baptist Secieties, eo. &., &e. THE AMERICAN TRACT SOCIETY. THE SLAVERY QUESTION AGAIN—EXCITING DEBATE. The thirty-fourth annual meeting of the American Tract. Society was held yosterday at the Academy of Music, and, as usual, their proceedings were enlivened by the intre« duction and discussion of the interminable topic of sla. very. Piccoiomini herself never drew together a fuller house, nor affurded her auditors more entertainment. The business meeting was announced to be held at ning o’clock in the forenoon, and at that hour the mecting wag called to order by the President, Chief Justice Willams, of Connecticut, who called upon the Rey. Gardner Spring, D. D., to addreas the throne of grace. After the prayer, Rev. Dr. De Wirr, chairman of tho Executive Committee, submitted a brief statement, as follows :— Refore the society engages in ite business, T ire, the name of the Executive Comtmittoe, to ollar sere marks which will occupy but afew moments. The recur- rence of another anniversary, furnishipg the details of the operations of the eociety during the + year, is well ited to inspire gratitude to the head of the church, and should draw our bearts in common bonds of faith and ove to Him and each other. The position in which the tosiety is now placed in the onward growth and extent of \tg beveficent mfluence, teads our minds to revert to the period of its formation, thirty-four years since, and to acknowledge the divine favor which bas attended it, There are not many surviving of thoze who were active in the couseels and measures which led to the organiza tion and establishment of this society, Three of the Executive Committee, the Treasurer, the Chairman of tbe Finance Committee, the senior Secretary, and also the Recording Secretary were prominent im these counsel8 and measures, and the three former were appointed to the offives they now sustain at ite first organization. Most of those who were associated with them at that time have ceased from their labors, and en- tered into their rest. I may here be allowed a personal remioiscence. I wag then residing in a retired country charge, and was invited to visit New York and take part in the public exercises af the formation of the American Tract Society. Tne de impression whicb pervaded that scene was moat marked, and all appeared to feel that they were ‘sitting in heav- enly places,” and that tne “dew of heaven” rested upom them. I was kindly invited by the Rey. Dr. Milnor, whose recjouk memory remaing fresh and fragrant in the whole Ennstian community, to dine with him. The en; Sopic among the small umber of Christian frieuts or dif- ferent Christian denominations then assembied{ at hig house, was the character and prospects of the Society jus: formed. I, of course, eapnot remember the words, but the sentiments uttered by Dr. Milner are distinctly lodged in my mind. He said that he viewed the formation of the Pay as most importaat and in« teresting event. It would tolve the probiem whether Christians in different divisions of the church remaii faitbful to their denom!national views and imverests, cot unite on a basis of evangelical trath common to all, and ga labor together for its diffusion and its saying influence. The society being a national! institution, it would enlist Christians not only of different denominations, but of every section of our land, and prove a bond of union. The hope was also expressed that in its saccessful operations its influence might in time pervade the world. The vision and bope then evtertained by Dr. Milnor, he was permite ted to realize during bis eflicient aad faithful labors ag Chairman of the Publishing and Executive Com. mitiecs for twenty yeare, and donbtiess the ful- diment of them cheered his last moments. These principles, entertained by the founders of this institu tion, have guided the Executive Committce. Tae problem istolved, and Christiaus mect and unite here on the com- nd of evangelical truth. We point to the great nd varicty of its publications, ail imbued with “the truth as it is in Jesus,’’ and we record the fact that during thirty-four years no discordant feeling has ever entereu into the deliberations aod jutercourse of the com- mittee. Let the history of tue operations of the society be carefully studied, aad there will be found therein the best and satistying testimony to the wide range of its beneiiceut influence at home, wad spre out the werld, The system of colportage, which has been for a number of years employed, becomes more aud more commended by the fruite it produces. It explores the wants and waste places of our eatended country, and brings the traths of the gospel in direct contact and sympethy with the minds aod hearts of men, The committee fee! the great responsibility, as woil ag high privilege, of being entrusted with superintendiag the interests of .ia institution, Conscious of their liability to err, they fee) their need of divine wisdom and aid. They arc grateful to the head of the church for Gis favor and Diersing, aud tothe Christian commonity for their con- tinued contributions and co-operatiou daring the year past. We gladly meet the members of the society in the calm aud peaceful consciousness of having sought faithfully to discharge our trost and fulfil our duty. May the same bieseed influeuce wbicd united and cemented all hei in Jove to Cbriet and bis cause at the formation of the so- ciety, and which continued throngh succeediug anniver- caries, rest upon this meeting. Thus, while the Holy Spirit £ visiting the cburches, aad the world is ma remarkable mapner opening to Christian effort, may the society be enabled to increase and enlarge its operations. The Prxsipenr announced that the next businees was the election of officers (exctusive of the Executive Com- mittee), by a vote of the members and directors, ‘Tne Rey. Dr. MoGex offered the foilowing resolution:— Resolved, That the officers of the society for the ena ing year be the same as those of laet year, except that the Hon, William ©, Alexander, of New Jersey, be vice-presi+ dent, aod the Rev. ChristopLer B. Gadsden, of Charles- on, South Curolina, be a director, in place of E. F. Banga, Esq , ave Rev. Dr. Johns, deceased. dir. KD, Benepicr eaid be desired to offer a resolution, ond have it put before the regolution offered by Dr. MoGee, which bad not been seconded. (Apptause.) Rey. Mr, Laws, of Sullivan county, called Mr. Benedict to order, on the ground that his resolution was too late to 1, exeept by way of amendment. (Cheers.) pict insisted that bis resolution should be first put, and that Dr. MeGee’s rnotion not having been second- ed before he (Benedict) aadreesed the Char, was not before the Convention. The PRESIDENT could not say was recouded before Mr. Bem gentleman was in 0 Rey. Jr. MURKY, sitting on the plar‘orm, stated that, immediately upon the reading of Dr. MoGeo's resolution, be seconded 16 Tre Presipenr (to Mr, Benedict)—Then you are. out of order. (Applause, and cries of Sit dowo,?? “Order,””) Rey. Dr. Parrey moved that Dr. MoUce’s resolution be postponed entil be could have an opportunity to read pnother resolution, (Hisses and cries of ‘Order!’? “Hear bin. Dr. Parren—Oh, g0 on, gentlemen, you wont disturb me in the least, (Oheors and hisses.) ‘My father was one of thore that went through the Revolutionary war, and Tam not to be frightened off. A GENTLEMAN in the parquette called Dr. Patten to order, beoause the question oa postpovement, which be said was not debatable, had not been put Dr. Pavren insisted that he bad a rigut to speak to hi motion to postpone, aud read bis resolution as @ part of his speech. He th proceeded to read, i @ Ftentorian tone, rising above the storm of hisses, the preamble \o his resolution, ag foilowe;— Whereas, The African slave trade is contrary to the firtt principles of the Gospel and of humanity—(hisses)— evangelical Christians — Here the etorm of mingled applause and hieres drowned, Dr. Patten’s voice; the President guid something which could not be beard by the reporters, and Dr. Patten re- pled—“Perbaps the President will understand better when be hears the resolution.” Again he esgayed to pro- ceed with the resolution, butouly the words “and whereas”? were andible, when bis voice was again over helmed by the uproar. Rey. Dr. Srrina then took the platform, and with great difficulty obtained a hearing. He was understood to say that theugh he should probably vote against the resolu- tion of Lr.
