Robbery of the Post Office Boxes. Owing to the numerous complaints of box tolders at our city Post Office recently, and the nature of some dis- coveries made by the special agent of the Department, it has been quite apparent that, in addition to the opera- tions of private messengers, a boli game was being played by another class of outs dors ‘n getting poases gion of the contents of boxes, in spite of every precaution adopted amorg the delivery clerka by direction of the Postmaster. ‘nm several instances letters were thus obtained contain- ing bank checks and drafts, which wore successfully forged, presented et the bank counters and cashed. The latter part of February last a letter was mailed at La- porte, Indiana, covering a check for tw) hundred dollars, and addreesed to the Rey. Milton Badger, Seorctary of the Home Missiooary Society. It was mot received by Mr. Badger, but the check turned up at the Corn Exchange Bank, bavirg toen paid. Another jeter, mailed as Circleville, Ohiv, April 22, for Meears. Walab & Colter, with a check for $90 26, was missed. The check was presented at tho Park Bank, but not paid, a little hesitancy on the part of the teller causivg the rogue to make a hesty retreat, leaving the check behind him: Another letter failed, mailed at Rochester, N. Y., contain- ing remittances amounting to soveral hundred dollars. It was addressed to C. Scribner, publisher. One of the checks drawn on D, Appleton & Co., was prosented to that firm and paid by their check on the Mercantile Bank, which was cashed at that bank. ‘The epecial agent visited all the above named firms and ‘vanks, and found that the description of the party who had presented the stolen checks at the diffor- ept places was very nearly the game, and tha the forged endersements could have been written by one and the same person, ekillod in the art of peaman ehip. He accordingly kept on tho look out for days, im the lobby of the Post office, for a pereon answering the de. scription. On Saturday afternoon last, while the watch was temporarily withirawn, the young gentleman ap- peared, and called for the contents of Walsh & Coiter's box, but did not obtain the letters, No movement was made thea to alarm bim, and yesterday morning he mado another and a Inst cail, this time presenting a forged order for the letters, purporting to bo signed by (he above named fi As soon as the lettors were handed him, he was seized by Mr. Strong, the superintendent of the box delivery, and politely aided inside tho office, and was soon ia tho Lends of the agent of the Department, who bat been for come weeks on bis track, and to whom he subse. quently confessed his agency in the above frauds oa the Host Vflice and the banks.
